This report describes Honda's efforts to become "carbon neutral by 2050," its plan to make 100% of its global four-wheeled vehicle sales EV/FCV by 2040 based on this goal, and its plans to introduce EVs in the US and China.
Honda's "2050 Carbon Neutrality" plan in the first half of this report is based on the keynote speech "Honda's Initiatives and Creation of Future to Achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050” by Mr. Keiji Ohtsu, President and Representative Director of Honda R&D Co., Ltd. and Managing Executive Officer of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (Honda).
Honda is aiming to become carbon neutral through all its products and corporate activities by 2050. In his presentation, Mr. Ohtsu explained that the carbon neutrality plan Honda is aiming for is not limited to plans to introduce EVs/FCVs (electric vehicles / fuel cell vehicles), but is widely considered and planned covering battery usage, hydrogen energy utilization, and efficient use of resources. He said that carbon neutrality is not something that can be achieved by Honda alone, but requires all of society to work on it, and that he wanted to get as close as possible to a vision of society in the future for this purpose.
Specifically, Honda will focus on the three pillars of "Triple Action to ZERO" (carbon neutrality, clean energy, and resource circulation). The "Honda eMaaS Concept" is a concept that brings together mobility and energy utilization, and will expand the use of carbon-free energy through an "energy multi-pathway" that utilizes a variety of energy sources, including mobile power packs, large-capacity batteries, and hydrogen.
In addition, as an evolutionary direction for EVs/FCVs, Honda is developing cell specifications and production processes for innovative batteries such as all-solid-state batteries. Furthermore, the company plans to accelerate the electrification of society as a whole by wisely combining the features of electricity and hydrogen energy.
Mr. Ohtsu also introduced efforts in Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technology, which utilizes, absorbs, and removes CO2 from areas where electrification is not suitable, such as aircraft, and where it is assumed that some CO2 will inevitably be emitted in the future.
The second half of this report will present the company's plan to make 100% of its global four-wheeled vehicle sales EV/FCV by 2040, as well as its plans to launch EVs in the US and China.
