Electrified vehicle (xEVs) proportion 40%, HEVs up 19%, BEVs gain 10%
In July, electrified vehicle (xEV) sales in 12 major countries and 3 Nordic countries (15 countries in total) increased by 6.5% year-over-year (y/y) but decreased by 10.0% month-over-month (m/m) to 1.982 million units, accounting for 39.7% of total automobile sales.
While China and the United States saw y/y declines, countries other than the U.S. and China, such as those in Europe, all experienced double-digit increases, resulting in an overall increase across the 15 countries. Due to sluggish domestic demand and intensifying competition in the Chinese market, exports from China are increasing, and Chinese NEVs (New Energy Vehicles: BEVs, PHEVs, FCEVs) are gaining a stronger presence in electrified vehicle markets around the world.
Across all 15 countries, BEV sales increased by 9.8% y/y (12.9% drop m/m) to 1.021 million units, representing a market share of 20.4%. BEV sales in China increased by only a slight 0.8% y/y, but significant growth in European countries and Brazil drove the overall increase. HEV sales increased by 18.9% y/y but fell 7.6% m/m to 526,000 units, representing a market share of 10.5%. Sales of affordable Japanese and Korean HEVs in the U.S. were strong and saw increased growth, while sales continued to be robust in China, Italy, the UK, and other countries. On the other hand, PHEV sales were down 10.8% y/y to 435,000 units. While there were increases in Brazil, Italy, and the UK, the decline in China was significant: a 5.6% decrease compared to the previous month. The PHEV share of the market was 8.7%.
Cumulative sales of electrified vehicles (xEVs) from January to July totaled 12.645 million units, a 0.7% y/y increase, marking the first year-over-year increase in 2026. Sales of xEVs account for 36.4% of total new car sales in the period. The breakdown is as follows: BEVs accounted for 6.292 million units (18.1% share), PHEVs for 2.750 million units (7.9% share), and HEVs for 3.602 million units (10.4% share).
