Asian OEM Electrification Strategies, Including EV Product Timelines - Part 2

Greater powertrain variety with Nissan, Honda, Hyundai-Kia and Mitsubishi lineups

2019/12/18

Summary

Most of the electrified models under Nissan and Honda, as with most other Japanese OEMs, are pure hybrid vehicles. Despite this, both companies have a strong focus on non-hybrid electrified vehicles. The Nissan Leaf battery electric compact hatchback is the world's best-selling highway-capable electric car. Nissan also has announced plans to develop a global battery electric crossover based on the IMx Concept in the future. Honda's diversity can be seen in the Clarity sedan, which currently features fuel cell, plug-in hybrid and battery electric powertrain options. Honda's new e: Technology brand will include the Honda e battery electric compact hatchback, as well as another battery electric model.

In contrast, Hyundai-Kia and Mitsubishi feature a mix of pure hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicle models. Hyundai-Kia has several models with different electrified powertrains, including the Hyundai Ioniq which features a pure hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric version. At CES 2018, Hyundai-Kia unveiled the Hyundai Nexo fuel cell SUV, which launched in March 2018. While Mitsubishi's initial electrified offerings focused on the battery electric i-MiEV, its Outlander PHEV has received enough appeal for Mitsubishi to focus future efforts on plug-in hybrid SUVs.
