CATL Technology Trends

Increasing number of patent applications for battery safety

This report created by MarkLines focuses on a number of recent technical topics surrounding the automotive industry and is based on patent information from the “Technology Information Distribution Service - swimy” obtained by the Toyota Technical Development Corporation (TTDC). The two business areas of TTDC are in the fields of intellectual property and measurement control solutions. The intellectual property (IP) side of TTDC is involved in the collection and analysis of information on automotive technology developments globally, and provides services such as consulting for research planning, applying for patents in foreign languages, and technical translation.

Established in December 2011, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL), the largest automotive battery manufacturer in China, has the world's largest share of the automotive lithium-ion battery market. Since 2017, its number of customers has increased rapidly, and now it supplies product to Chinese automakers such as Beijing Electric Vehicle Co., Ltd. (BAIC BJEV), Geely Automobile (Geely), and SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicle Company (SMPV), European automakers such as BMW, Daimler, and Volkswagen, U.S. automakers such as Tesla, and Japanese automakers such as Toyota and Honda. This report describes the technology trends of CATL based on patent application information.

The number of CATL patent applications has been on the rise since its establishment in 2011. A large number of foreign (non-China) patent applications have been filed in the U.S. and Europe, and it is highly likely that the number of foreign applications will increase, as the number of product delivery destinations is expected to increase in the future. Regarding the number of applications for each technical field, since 2017, when the number of delivery destinations increased sharply, the number of applications related to battery safety assuming installation in vehicles has been increasing.
