Patent application trends of GM, GE, and SIEMENS

2021/10/04

Summary

This report created by MarkLines focuses on a number of recent technical topics surrounding the automotive industry and is based on patent information from the “Technology Information Distribution Service - swimy” obtained by the Toyota Technical Development Corporation (TTDC). The two business areas of TTDC are in the fields of intellectual property and measurement control solutions. The intellectual property (IP) side of TTDC is involved in the collection and analysis of information on automotive technology developments globally, and provides services such as consulting for research planning, applying for patents in foreign languages, and technical translation.

In recent years, the automotive industry has been applying a variety of materials such as high-tensile materials and aluminum to reduce the weight of car bodies. The technology of joining dissimilar metals is a very important element in the application of these materials. This report provides an overview of the trend of patent applications filed by companies worldwide for dissimilar metal joining technologies.

The number of patent applications related to dissimilar metal joining technology has been increasing since 2011, reaching a peak of over 450 in 2016, but has been declining since then. Looking at the number of patent applications filed by each applicant, the number of applications is highest in the order of General Motors Company (GM), General Electric Company (GE), Siemens AG, Kobe Steel, Ltd., and Daimler AG. Looking at the development items of the patent applicants with the largest number of applications, GM has the most applications for the development item "Resistance Spot Welding Aluminum to Steel Using Preplaced Metallurgical Additives", GE for the development item "Weld Filler Additive and Method of Welding", and Siemens for the development item "Single Crystal Welding of Directionally Solidified Materials". In addition, among Japanese companies and research institutions, Daicel Polymer, Aitech, Chubu Alumit Industries, Musashi Seimitsu Industries, and Toyohashi University of Technology are listed as applicants with a high average number of citations per application, although the scale of applications filed in Japan by these applicants is not large.
