Toward Net-Zero Powertrain: From Technology Competition to Collaboration
From the presentation coverage at the CTI Symposium Germany 2025
Summary
The CTI Symposium is one of the leading international professional conferences in the European automotive industry, where technology strategies related to next-generation powertrains and carbon-free mobility are discussed. The symposium is held annually by CTI (Car Training Institute), a division of Euroforum Deutschland GmbH. In 2025, it was held from December 2 to 3 at the Estrel Congress Center in Berlin, Germany.
Following the keynote speeches in the plenary session, the program featured parallel, domain-specific deep-dive sessions focusing on the latest technological developments in areas such as electric powertrains, electric motors, transmissions, commercial vehicle powertrains, virtual development methods, cost reduction, operating strategies, and energy and thermal management. In addition, prior to the main conference, two pre-event workshops were held: “Mobility Meets Defence” (a workshop exploring opportunities for new market entry into, and collaboration with, the defense and military industries) and “AI Fundamentals & Best Practices in Powertrain Development” (a workshop focused on improving efficiency and advancing powertrain development through the use of AI).
Prof. Dr. Malte Jaensch of the Technical University of Munich, who serves as Chairman, pointed out that the view that battery electric vehicles will be the dominant mode of mobility in the future is becoming widely accepted. Regarding AI, he stated that the stage of questioning its usefulness has already passed, and that the discussion has entered a phase focused on when and how it should be applied.
At the same time, he emphasized that the essence of technological development does not lie in AI itself, but in human creativity and collaboration, and that creating a development environment in which engineers/employees can proactively demonstrate their capabilities is what leads to competitiveness. Ultimately, he stressed that what matters most is not winning or losing competition but protecting the global environment and securing a future for the next generation, noting that cooperation beyond national and regional boundaries is essential to achieve this goal.
