Summary
The 31st GIIAS (Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show 2024/GAIKINDO) was held at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) located at BSD City in Pagedangan, Tangerang Regency, Banten, near Jakarta, from July 18 to July 28, 2024. The event is organized once a year by the Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO), and the other they sponsored is the Indonesian International Motor Show (IIMS), which was most recently held from February 15th to 25th, 2024 and led by the exhibition organizer, PT. Dyandra Promosindo.
Finished vehicle automakers (OEMs) and brands participating in the event were Audi, BAIC, BMW, BYD, Chery, Citroen, Daihatsu, GAC Aion, Great Wall Motors (GWM), Honda, Hyundai, Jaecoo (Chery), Jetour, Kia, Lexus, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, MG, Mini, Mitsubishi Motors, Neta, Nissan, Porsche, Seres, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota, Vinfast, Volvo, VW, Wuling, etc. Other participants included trucks, buses, electric bikes, accessory parts, auto financing, and services.
Reflecting the Indonesian government's desire to focus on EVs, this year's event was characterized by the introduction of many electrified models, including BEVs, HEVs, PHEVs, and FCEVs from various companies. Furthermore, GIIAS featured ambitious exhibits from numerous emerging forces, including Chinese manufacturers, South Korea's Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai), and Vietnam's VinFast LLC (VinFast), all aiming to break the stronghold of Japanese manufacturers that have dominated the Indonesian market for many years.
The company that attracted the most attention this time was BYD, which announced the launch of a new factory in an industrial park in Subang, and President Joko Widodo attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the plant, which was highly anticipated. Among the newcomers, the booths of Hyundai and Wuling, which already have a proven track record in the sale of electric vehicles, attracted many visitors, partly due to the unveiling of their highly anticipated new models.

The Japanese rival automakers Toyota, Honda, and Daihatsu also exhibited a large number of electric vehicle models, and Mitsubishi Motors and Suzuki, which have loyal fan bases, also attracted visitors, but it seemed that the emerging automakers had the advantage in terms of momentum. In their presentations at the press conference, many Japanese companies highlighted their activities in Indonesia over the past several decades, creating jobs and contributing to exports. In terms of being reliable brands and providing a sense of stability, the automakers have built up a sense of trust through its history. However, in a country like Indonesia with a large young population, if a brand is perceived as being old-fashioned or a brand for their parents' generation, the situation can change drastically. It is unclear whether Japanese automakers will be able to maintain their current market share of over 90%.
Perhaps reflecting the recent sluggish sales of BEVs or the current situation in Indonesia, where there are concerns about infrastructure development, many automakers are offering hybrid models in addition to BEVs, and Hyundai and Wuling have ICE models in their lineups, making this an all-out battle.
The number of visitors this year was 475,084, up 3% from last year, according to local reports. Considering the current situation in Indonesia, where sales volume is down nearly 20% from the previous year, this can be considered a healthy performance. Although many visitors said they came to see EVs, very few had decided to switch to EVs immediately, giving the impression that it may take some time before before a full-scale switchover is made.
