Geely announces smart strategy, SAIC establishes Feifan Automobile, Great Wall's high-end EV brand

  According to a January 12, 2022, release by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), sales of new motor vehicles in China in 2021 increased 3.8% over the previous year to 26,275,000 units. This includes the sales of New Energy Vehicles (NEV) which increased 157.5% over 2020 sales to 3,521,000 units. For the month of December, sales volume fell 1.6% year-over-year (y/y) to 2,786,000 units of which NEV sales increased by 113.9% to 531,000 units, achieving a 19.1% market share.

  This report covers the significant trends of the major government-affiliated and privately-owned Chinese complete vehicle manufacturers in the Chinese market in the fourth quarter (October - December) of 2021. The major automakers are continuing to hasten their efforts to establish a foothold in CASE (connected, autonomous, sharing, electrified) related technologies, focusing on increasing the proportion of NEV sales and the practical application of automated driving technology. In the NEV field, the SAIC Group established Feifan Automobile, which began operation of R Auto, a premium NEV brand, for the mid-range / high-end NEV market. SAIC Maxus Automotive (Maxus), an SAIC subsidiary which manufactures and sells light-duty commercial vehicles, has set a target of launching 10 NEV models within the next three years and increasing the sales ratio of NEVs to over 40% by 2025. Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC Group) plans to increase the sales ratio of NEVs sold under its own brand to 50% by 2025, and to increase the sales ratio of NEVs sold by the entire group to 50% by 2030. Farizon Auto, a brand under Geely New Energy Commercial Vehicles Group plans to sell 570,000 NEVs and achieve a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions over the entire life cycle of complete vehicles by 2030. Great Wall Motor has announced the launch of its new high-end EV brand, Saloon.

  In the intelligent and connected field, Geely plans to build a strategic framework for a smart science and technology eco-network as well as a smart energy / manufacturing / service system, while at the same time investing CNY 150 billion in R&D and releasing more than 25 intelligent NEV models. The company announced nine major actions, including the achievement of sales of 3.65 million units for the entire group in 2025. The Seres brand under Chongqing Jinkang New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd. has jointly launched a high-end smart car brand, AITO (Adding Intelligence to Auto), following its first partnership model with Huawei, the SF5. In addition, several government-affiliated automakers are focusing on Robotaxis.
