The Megane and Captur Plug-in Hybrids and the Clio (equivalent to Lutecia in Japan) Hybrid sold by Renault S.A. (Renault) in France are all equipped with the new hybrid E-TECH powertrain system.

The E-TECH system is composed of a multimode gearbox, which is capable of 4-speed shifting of the engine and 2-speed shifting of the motor, and two electric motors. The drive motor is an upgraded version of the motor used in the Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. (Nissan) X-Trail; for further weight reduction the world’s first split core process is utilized for the design of the rotor in addition to the stator.

This report introduces the new technology of the new Renault hybrid system and the motor based on the presentation entitled “(Vol. No. 20206064) Electric Traction Motor of New Plug-In Hybrid System for Compact Vehicle” by Mr. Akihiro Tanaka and others (Nissan) given at the 2020 Japan Society of Automotive Engineers (JSAE) Congress (Autumn) held in an online format October 21 through 23, 2020.
