Equipment on new European models (2): PSA, Renault, Fiat, GM and Ford

Implementation of headlamps adaptive beam control and auto-brake safety systems

2011/10/19

概 要

The following is a summary of major equipment available on the new passenger cars launched by PSA, Renault, Fiat, GM Europe and Ford Europe in and after the summer of 2010.

Among the driving stability equipment, the tyre pressure monitoring system to be mandatory under EU legislation (after November 2012 for new models, November 2014 for continuing models) is being made available. The torque vectoring system applies a small amount of braking to the inside wheel when going in a corner so that more engine torque will go to the outside wheel for better cornering performance and stability. Ford Focus is the first compact car segment car in which this system is used.

As for vision systems, availability is increasing of the high-beam assist that automatically switches between high and low beams while auto-dimming rear view mirror is becoming more available on a broader variety of vehicles. Among the collision safety systems of increasing availability is the automatic activation of hazard warning lights that alert the drivers of vehicles behind when the emergency brakes are applied.

As for driving and parking assist systems of increasing availability are the collision imminent braking that applies automatic braking when a rear collision is imminent thereby preventing or mitigating damage, and the park assist that looks for enough space for parallel parking.

Among the systems that address greater comfort and convenience, navigation systems are being adopted that allow access to real-time congestion information and route guidance based on information collected from users, while availability is expanding for Start-stop system that contributes to better fuel economy.

(Note)  See MarkLines Report No.1010 of September 2011 "Equipment on new European models (1)" for equipment adopted by three German auto manufacturers (Daimler, BMW, VW).

(Notes) 1. C-Max is a five-passenger minivan designed upon Ford's global C segment platform. Its seven-passenger version with an extended wheelbase and sliding doors in the rear section is called the Grand C-Max.
2. Focus is the first fully remodeled C segment model in six years. It comes in three body types; five-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door station wagon.
3. Torque Vectoring System applies a small amount of braking to the inside wheel when going in a corner so that more engine torque will go to the outside wheel for better cornering performance and stability. Braking causes a similar effect as the LSD (limited slip differential) to adjust the torque distribution between the right and left front wheels. The system uses the ESP to monitor the vehicle and road conditions at the frequency of 100 times per second and adjust the distribution accordingly.
4. Auto High Beam automatically switches to low-beam lighting when the vehicle running at night with high beams encounters another car in front or in opposing lanes, and returns to high-beam lighting pattern when other cars are out of sight.
5. Intelligent Protection System is a passive safety package and consists of airbags, front seatbelts with pre-tensioners, and a number of damage mitigation devices such as the collapsible steering column, retracting pedals, and automatic hazard warning lights.
6. Adaptive Cruise Control with Forward Alert lets the driver set the upper vehicle speed between 15 and 70 mph and guides the vehicle within the set speed while keeping distance from another car in front. When the distance becomes smaller, the system gives audible and visual warnings.
7. Driver Alert constantly monitors the driver's behavior and, when it detects drowsiness due to fatigue, it displays a message that it's time to take a rest.
8. When the vehicle is running at speeds up to 20 mph and the Low Speed Safety System detects the car in front has unexpectedly stopped, it applies automatic brake until the vehicle comes to a stop. This is the first Ford model in which the system is used.
9. Active park assist looks for space large enough for parking and automates the steering maneuvers for parking.
