Japanese OEMs produced 22.893 million vehicles in 2010, increased by 26.8% over the previous year when production dropped due to the economic crisis. (Japanese production recovered to 97.6% of the 2007 peak record (23.456 million units). Of the 2010 records, domestic and overseas production recovered to 83% and 112% to the 2007 records, respectively.)
According to JAMA's announcement, the 2010 domestic production was up by 21.3% to 9.626 million units. Thanks to the government 'eco-car' subsidies until September of the same year, domestic sales were up, while export volume to Asia and the US expanded. As a result, production exceeded the previous year's level for the first time in three years, although it has finished below 10 million units for two years running. Export volume was up for the first time in two years by 33.8% to 4.38 million units.
As local production expanded mostly in emerging countries, overseas production reached 9.681 million units in the January - September period of 2010, up 38.4% on the same period last year. Production in Asia including China was up 44.6%. Production in North America was on the track of recovery, including the US where production was up 44.9%.
Local production is expected to expand further in emerging countries including BRICs and Southeast Asia where demand continues to expand. At the end, this report shows movements of expanding production capabilities by Japanese OEMs in emerging countries and North America, of which markets are on a trend towards recovery.
