R&D

Product Development

Gas-lubricated mechanical seal
-Through its Low Emission Sealing Solutions (LESS) initiative, the Company has developed Levitex, a gas-lubricated mechanical seal for crankshafts. Levitex is the first nearly friction-free crankshaft seal. Due to the structure of its contact face, the primary ring in the Levitex seal interacts with a mating ring to creating a cushion of air which it floats upon, generating much less friction compared to oil lubrication. The Levitex seals are expected to generate CO2 savings between 0.5-1.0 grams per kilometer. A customer ordered prototypes of the Levitex seal at the end of 2012 and has already expressed great interest in regular production of Levitex seals in 2017. Products developed through low-emission initiative
-The Company introduced products developed through its LESS initiative at a press conference in Weinheim, Germany. These products are meant to address automotive trends such as improving fuel economy and decreasing component weight.
  • Energy Saving Seal (ESS): A seal for engine crankshafts, camshafts and transmissions. The seal combines the sealing interface of a PTFE collar with friction-reducing properties of an elastomer seal to reduce friction by 40% compared to a conventional PTFE lip.
  • CASCO cassette-type seal: The CASCO seal generates less friction due to the design of its axial sealing lip. Compared with conventional lip designs, the CASCO seal provides energy savings of up to 70%.
  • Integrated multi-pole encoder and radial shaft seal: The elastomer layer on the encoder is magnetized and encoded to provide rotational speed and positional information about the crankshaft. The combination of the two components reduces installation space, weight and manufacturing costs.

Offset seal
-The Company has developed an offset seal which can be used as a multifunctional connector for a wide variety of components, including engine components, housings, sensor holders, fuel pipes and intake ports. The offset seal consists of two shaped metal rings which form the inner and outer diameters of the seal, an elastomer that encapsulates the seal and an elastomer compensator which helps the seal adjust for deviations in positions of various components. Depending on the design of the compensator, the offset seals can adjust a center offset of up to three millimeters.  (From a press release on May 23, 2013)

New polyurethane standard
-The Company developed a new polyurethane which will serve as its new polyurethane standard. The new polyurethane is more water-resistant than the previous version and can be used in temperatures ranging from -40 degrees Celsius to 120 degrees Celsius. The new polyurethane will be available later in 2014.
