Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "The decline in the new car market is concerning but it’s important to remember demand remains at historically high levels. Falling business and consumer confidence is undoubtedly taking a toll, however, and confusing anti-diesel messages have caused many to hesitate before buying a new low emission diesel car. 2017 has undoubtedly been a very volatile year and the lacklustre economic growth means that we expect a further weakening in the market for 2018. Despite the overall decline, new car registrations remain high, with the market still the second biggest in the EU, behind Germany. Meanwhile, 60 new models boasting exciting next generation technology - from systems that take over the driving in traffic jams, to those that detect potential collisions with pedestrians in day and night-time driving - are set to make showroom debuts in 2018."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "An eighth month of decline in the new car market is a major concern, with falling business and consumer confidence exacerbated by ongoing anti-diesel messages from government. Diesel remains the right choice for many drivers, not least because of its fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. The decision to tax the latest low emission diesels is a step backwards and will only discourage drivers from trading in their older, more polluting cars. Given fleet renewal is the fastest way to improve air quality, penalising the latest, cleanest diesels is counterproductive and will have detrimental environmental and economic consequences."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Declining business and consumer confidence is undoubtedly affecting demand in the new car market but this is being compounded by confusion over government policy on diesel. Consumers need urgent reassurance that the latest, low emission diesel cars on sale will not face any bans, charges or other restrictions, anywhere in the UK. We urge the Government to use the forthcoming Autumn Budget to restore stability to the market, encouraging the purchase of the latest low emission vehicles as fleet renewal is the fastest and most effective way of addressing air quality concerns."

UK car sales decrease 9.3% to 426,170 units in September
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) release dated on October 5, UK car sales decreased 9.3% to 426,170 units in September 2017.
Year-to-date sales decreased 3.9%, with 2,066,411 cars registered in the first nine months of 2017.
September sales for Ford decreased 19.1% to 39,696 units (9.3% market share) and Volkswagen sales increased 7.7% to 36,332 units (8.5% share), while BMW sales decreased 3.5% to 31,465 units (7.4% share).
Mercedes-Benz sales in September decreased 1.7% to 31,430 units (7.4% share) and Vauxhall sales decreased 25.5% to 31,058 units (7.3% share).
Of the five most popular vehicles in September, 13,499 Nissan Qashqais; 12,800 Volkswagen Golfs; 10,826 Ford Fiestas; 10,235 Ford Focuses; and 8,562 Vauxhall Corsas were sold.
Compared to last September, gasoline-engine car sales decreased by 1.2% to 232,810 units (54.6% share), diesel-engine car sales decreased 21.7% to 170,732 units (40.1% share), and alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) sales increased 41.0% to 22,628 units (5.3% share).
In September, private car sales decreased 8.8% to 204,055 units (47.9% share), fleet sales decreased 10.1% to 200,289 units (47.0% share), and sales to businesses decreased 5.2% to 21,826 units (5.1% share).
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons decreased 4.2% this September to 57,368 units.
Sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons decreased 20.9% to 909 units in September.
Sales of taxis were 198 units in September.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "September is always a barometer of the health of the UK new car market so this decline will cause considerable concern. Business and political uncertainty is reducing buyer confidence, with consumers and businesses more likely to delay big ticket purchases. The confusion surrounding air quality plans has not helped, but consumers should be reassured that all the new diesel and petrol models on the market will not face any bans or additional charges. Manufacturers’ scrappage schemes are proving popular and such schemes are to be encouraged given fleet renewal is the best way to address environmental issues in our towns and cities."

Mercedes-Benz sales in July decreased 0.3% to 11,617 units (7.2% share) and Vauxhall sales decreased 41.6% to 11,528 units (7.1% share).
Of the five most popular vehicles in July, 5,251 Ford Focuses; 5,236 Volkswagen Golfs; 4,640 Nissan Qashqais; 3,372 Ford Fiestas; and 3,227 Volkswagen Polos were sold.
Compared to last July, gasoline-engine car sales decreased by 3.0% to 83,969 units (51.8% share), diesel-engine car sales decreased 20.1% to 69,157 units (42.7% share), and alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) sales increased 64.9% to 8,871 units (5.5% share).
In July, private car sales decreased 6.8% to 67,705 units (41.8% share), fleet sales decreased 10.1% to 89,186 units (55.1% share), and sales to businesses decreased 23.8% to 5,106 units (3.2% share).
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons increased 1.1% this July to 24,766 units.
Sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons decreased 2.4% to 444 units in July.
Sales of taxis were 8 units in July.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "The fall in consumer and business confidence is having a knock on effect on demand in the new car market and government must act quickly to provide concrete plans regarding Brexit. While it's encouraging to see record achievements for alternatively fuelled vehicles, consumers considering other fuel types will have undoubtedly been affected by the uncertainty surrounding the government's clean air plans.  It is important to remember that there are no plans to charge drivers using the latest Euro 6 models and no proposed bans for conventional petrol and diesel vehicles for some 23 years. The lower demand in recent months will inevitably mean competition from manufacturers will intensify and it will be a good opportunity for consumers to get a great deal on their next car, with many exciting new models launched in the coming months."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "As forecast, demand for new cars has started to cool following five consecutive years of solid growth but the numbers are still strong and the first half of the year is the second biggest on record. Provided consumer and business confidence holds, we expect demand to remain at a similarly high level over the coming months. It’s encouraging to see alternatively fuelled vehicles experiencing rapid growth but adoption is still at a relatively low level and more long term incentives are required if this new generation of vehicles is to be a more common sight on British roads."

UK car sales jump 8.4% in March for monthly, quarterly records
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on April 5, UK car sales increased 8.4% to 562,337 units in March 2017, setting a new monthly record.
Likewise, UK sales of 820,016 units in the first three months of 2017 set a new quarterly record.
The reason, in part, for the high numbers in March was that consumers and businesses brought their purchases forward to avoid new VED charges in place as of April 1, 2017.
March sales for Ford increased 19.0% to 71,837 units (12.8% market share) and Volkswagen sales increased 2.0% to 39,485 units (7.0% share), while GM Vauxhall sales decreased 10.3% to 46,564 units (8.3% share).
BMW sales in March increased 7.4% to 34,873 units (6.2% share) and Mercedes-Benz sales increased 18.0% to 35,690 units (6.3% share).
Of the five most popular vehicles in March, 25,428 Ford Fiestas; 17,119 Ford Focuses; 16,045 Vauxhall Corsas; 13,732 Nissan Qashqais; and 11,680 Vauxhall Astras were sold.
Compared to last March, diesel-engine car sales increased by 1.6% to 244,263 units (43.4% share), gasoline-engine car sales increased 13.2% to 295,256 units (52.5% share), and alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) sales increased 31.0% to 22,818 units (4.1% share).
In March, private car sales increased 4.4% to 273,751 units (48.7% share), fleet sales increased 12.5% to 261,930 units (46.6% share), and sales to businesses increased 11.9% to 26,656 units (4.7% share).
Light commercial vehicles (LCV) sales of 63,316 units in March 2017 represented a 0.9% decrease from March 2016 sales.
Sales of commercial vehicles between 2.5 and 3.5 tons increased 3.6% this March to 40,237 units.
Sales of commercial vehicles larger than 3.5 tons increased 1.9% to 1,093 units in March.
