Canada sets all-time sales record in 2015, up 2.5%
Canadian car sales in December were down 1.9% from last December, at 128,874 units, although year-end total vehicle sales for 2015 were up 2.5% over 2014, at 1,898,485 units. In December, SUVs and pickups were up 5.6% at 88,055 units, while passenger cars were down 15.0% at 40,819 units compared to last December. Of the Detroit Big 3, GM was down 3.4%, Ford was down 13.3%, and FCA was up 1.6% from last December. Japanese automakers had a good December, with the Nissan brand up 16.7%, Infiniti up 15.0%, Toyota brand up 4.8%, Lexus up 10.4%, Subaru up 7.6%, and Mazda up 20.3%, although Honda was down 15.5% year-to-year. Hyundai monthly sales were down 12.5%, while Kia sales were up 7.5% from a year ago. Mercedes sold 6.6% and VW brand 2.6% more vehicles this December, but BMW brand sales were down 1.9% compared to the previous year.
Overall combined sales for the Big 3 in 2015 were up 0.4% over 2014, while all foreign makes combined were up 4.3% in unit sales over 2014.
FCA took top spot for the first time in the Canadian sales rankings in 2015, eclipsing Ford.
