2023 vehicle sales in Thailand down 8.7%, production down 2.2% (detailed report)
According to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), December vehicle sales in Thailand decreased 17.5% year over year to 68,326 units. The negative factors mentioned by the FTI included the increased auto loan rejection rates, especially of pickup trucks, with stringent requirements of financial institutions. Household debt level has already exceeded 90% of the country's GDP. There was also an economic slowdown and a delay in the 2024 fiscal budget. 2023 full year vehicle sales in Thailand decreased 8.7% year over year to 775,780 units.
According to data compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT), by maker sales in 2023, Toyota was down 7.9% to 265,949 units. Isuzu was down 28.5% to 151,935 units and Honda was up 13.9% to 94,336 units. Ford sales were down 16.4% to 36,483 units, and Mitsubishi sales were down 35.2% to 32,668 units. Among Chinese makers, BYD was 30,432 units、MG was up 0.1% to 27,311 units and Neta was 13,836 units.
By body type sales in 2023, passenger cars were up 10.4% year over year to 292,505 units, while commercial vehicles were down 17.3% to 483,275 units. Pickup sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were down 28.5% to 325,024 units.
The Isuzu D-Max was the bestselling model in 2023 with 127,290 units, followed by Toyota Hilux with 114,585 units, Toyota Yaris ATIV with 55,527 units, Honda City with 43,262 units and Ford Ranger with 28,848 units.
New vehicle production in December decreased 15.8% to 133,621 units. Vehicle production for domestic sales and exports in December contributed 38.2% and 61.8% respectively. In December 2023, production of 1ton pickups witnessed a 21.4% drop YoY amid the decline in local sales of pickups. Moreover, passenger cars production in December also saw a 7.9% drop YoY. The FTI pointed out that this was also attributable to growth in EV imports. In 2023, vehicle production missed the revised target of 1.85 million units as it stood at 1,841,686 units, down 2.2% YoY.
Vehicle exports in December drops 19.1% to 90,305 units. The 2023 vehicle export increased 11.7% to 1,117,539 units valued at THB 720 billion, up 15.3%.
FTI anticipates growth of 3.2% in local car production in 2023 with 1.90 million units (1.15 million units for exports and 750,000 units to be sold locally).

October vehicle sales in Thailand down 8.8%, production down 7.0% (detailed report)
According to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), October vehicle sales in Thailand decreased 8.8% year over year (YoY) to 58,963 units from the same period in 2022. Sales in January-October 2023 reached 645,833 units, slid 7.5% from the same period in 2022 . According to the FTI, the strictness in auto loan approval process of financial institutions remains a key reason. Moreover, household debt remains high, and Thailand’s slowing economy is also caused by the delay in the implementation of Thailand's national budget for the 2024 fiscal year, which would also impact government investment.
According to data compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT), by maker sales in October, Toyota was down 18.0% to 20,852 units. Isuzu was down 22.2% to 10,962 units and Honda was up 23.6% to 7,306 units. BYD is on the 4th position with 3,840 units and MG sales were up 43.2% to 2,700 units. Among other Chinese brands, Great Wall Motor (GWM) was ranked 8th with 1,115 units, up 10.3%, while Neta on the 9th with 1,058 units.
By body type, passenger cars were up 13.7% year over year to 22,130 units. Commercial vehicle sales were down 18.4% to 36,833 units. Pickup truck (including PPV) sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were down 35.1% to 22,998 units.
The Toyota Hilux was the best-selling model (registration base) in October with 7,693 units, followed by Isuzu D-Max with 7,177 units, Toyota Yaris ATIV with 5,227 units, Honda City with 2,666 units and BYD Dolphin with 2,413 units.
The FTI announced that new vehicle production in October was 158,734 units, down 7.0% YoY. Vehicle production for domestic sales and exports contributed 40.6% and 59.4% respectively. In January-October 2023, vehicle production increased 0.6% to 1,544,705 units.
Vehicle exports in October 2023 were 105,726 units, up 12.2% YoY. In October, exports to Australia, the Middle East, Europe, North America, Central America, and South America improved. The vehicle export value in October was THB 72.5 billion, up 17.3% year over year. Vehicle exports in the first 10 months of 2023 reached 927,625 units, up 15.9% YoY.
On October 24, the FTI also announced that its projection on local car production in 2023 has, once again, been revised downward from 1.9 million units to 1.85 million units.

*There are cases where recently released data and detailed information in the database do not match up for reasons including different information sources, and discrepancies between preliminary reports and confirmed data.

September vehicle sales in Thailand down 16.3%, production down 8.4% (detailed report)
According to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), September vehicle sales in Thailand decreased 16.3% year over year (YoY) to 62,086 units from the same period in 2022. Sales in January-September 2023 reached 586,870 units, slid 7.4% from the same period in 2022. The key negative factors mentioned by the FTI still include the strictness in auto loan approval process of financial institutions, especially for pickup trucks, amid the rising household debt.
According to data compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT), by maker sales in September, Toyota was down 7.9% to 21,141 units. Isuzu was down 49.5% to 10,898 units and Honda was up 34.2% to 9,113 units. BYD rose to the 4th position with 3,231 units and Ford sales were down 41.2% to 2,948 units. Among other Chinese brands, MG was ranked 6th with 2,427 units, up 9.8%, while Great Wall Motor on the 10th with 1,031 units, up 12.7%.
By body type, passenger cars were up 10.4% year over year to 25,425 units. Commercial vehicle sales were down 28.3% to 36,661 units. Pickup truck (including PPV) sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were down 43.6% to 23,343 units.
The Toyota Hilux was the best-selling model (registration base) in September with 8,452 units, followed by Isuzu D-Max with 8,282 units, Toyota Yaris ATIV with 4,279 units, Honda City with 2,974 units and Ford Ranger with 2,182 units.
The FTI announced that new vehicle production in September was 164,093 units, down 8.4% YoY. Vehicle production for domestic sales and exports contributed 36.6% and 63.4% respectively. In January-September 2023, vehicle production increased 1.6% to 1,385,971 units.
Vehicle exports in September 2023 were at 97,476 units, down 2.9% YoY. In September, exports to the Middle East, Europe, North America, Central America, and South America improved. The vehicle export value in September was THB 62.5 billion, down 7.5% year over year. Vehicle exports in the first 9 months of 2023 reached 821,899 units, up 16.3% YoY.
On October 24, the FTI also announced that its projection on local car production in 2023 has, once again, been revised downward from 1.9 million units to 1.85 million units. The targeted vehicle production for exports stays at 1.05 million units, while production for local sales has been lowered from 850,000 units to 800,000 units.

July vehicle sales in Thailand down 8.8%, production up 4.7% (detailed report)
According to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), July vehicle sales in Thailand decreased 8.8% year over year (YoY) to 58,419 units from the same period in 2022. Sales in January-July 2023 reached 464,550 units, slid 5.5% from the same period in 2022. Along with the local economic slowdown, rising household debt, and other negative factors, the strictness in auto loan approval process of financial institutions, especially for pickup trucks, continued to hamper vehicle sales. FTI said that the new government is expected to launch some support measures that will uplift the auto industry and the overall economy, hence the anticipated brighter outlook for the final quarter of 2023.
According to data compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT), by maker sales in July, Toyota was up 0.7% to 20,421 units. Isuzu was down 27.9% to 11,735 units and Honda was up 4.1% to 7,551 units. Ford sales were down 23.7% to 2,754 units and Mitsubishi sales were down 36.6% to 2,505 units. Chinese brands moved up the sales ranking with MG 6th and BYD 7th position.
By body type, passenger cars were up 17.3% year over year to 22,511 units. Commercial vehicle sales were down 19.9% to 35,908 units. Pickup truck (including PPV) sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were down 26.6% to 24,982 units.
The Isuzu D-Max was the best-selling model (registration base) in July with 8,944 units, followed by Toyota Hilux with 8,811 units, Toyota Yaris ATIV with 3,337 units, Honda City with 3,069 units and Ford Ranger with 2,144 units.
The FTI announced that new vehicle production in July was 149,709 units, up 4.7% YoY. Vehicle production for domestic sales and exports contributed 42.2% and 57.8% respectively. In January-July 2023, vehicle production increased 0.7% to 1,071,221 units.
Vehicle exports in July 2023 were at 108,052 units, up 30.0% YoY. The vehicle export value in July was THB 67.6 billion, up 30.0% year over year. In July, exports to almost every country which are Thailand trading partners improved, except for North America. Vehicle exports in the first 7 months of 2023 reached 636,868 units, up 19.5% YoY.
On July 25, FTI announced that it has revised its projection on local car production in 2023 downward from 1.95 million units to 1.9 million units. The targeted vehicle production for exports stays at 1.05 million units, while production for local sales has been lowered from 900,000 units to 850,000 units. The 4 reasons behind this adjustment are financial institutions’ stringent auto loan conditions, Thailand’s exports of some other products have been declining for several consecutive months, causing many industries to reduce work shifts and overtime, the rising cost of living, and high interest rates and though the sales of EVs continues rising in Thailand, most of them are imported from overseas, not locally produced.

*There are cases where recently released data and detailed information in the database do not match up for reasons including different information sources, and discrepancies between preliminary reports and confirmed data.

June vehicle sales in Thailand down 5.2%, production up 1.8% (detailed report)
According to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), June vehicle sales in Thailand decreased 5.2% year over year (YoY) to 64,440 units from the same period in 2022. Sales in January-June 2023 reached 406,131 units, slid 5.0% from the same period in 2022. The key negative factor, once again, mentioned by the FTI, was the strictness in auto loan approval process of financial institutions, especially for trucks, amid the rising household debt that has soared to 90.6% of the country’s GDP.
According to data compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT), by maker sales in June, Toyota was down 0.7% to 20,877 units. Isuzu was down 37.9% to 12,505 units and Honda was up 60.8% to 7,067 units. Ford sales were up 16.6% to 3,217 units and Mitsubishi sales were down 37.5% to 3,010 units.
By body type, passenger cars were up 24.2% year over year to 24,333 units. Commercial vehicle sales were down 17.1% to 40,107 units. Pickup truck (including PPV) sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were down 27.3% to 27,339 units.
The Isuzu D-Max was the best-selling model (registration base) in June with 11,014 units, followed by Toyota Hilux with 9,984 units, Toyota Yaris ATIV with 4,464 units, Honda City with 4,308 units and Ford Ranger with 2,465 units. Among Chinese maker models, BYD’s ATTO 3 electric SUV falls out of top 10 models while Neta V electric SUV ranked at 7th with 2,203 units.
The FTI announced that new vehicle production in June was 145,557 units, up 1.8% YoY. Vehicle production for domestic sales and exports contributed 41.7% and 58.3% respectively. In January-June 2023, vehicle production increased 5.9% to 921,512 units.
Vehicle exports in June 2023 were at 88,826 units, up 20.2% YoY. The vehicle export value in June was THB 55.9 billion, up 30.7% year over year. In June, exports to Thailand trading partners that improved included Asia, Australia and Oceania, the Middle East, Europe, and North America. Vehicle exports in the first 6 months of 2023 reached 528,816, up 17.6% YoY.

May vehicle sales in Thailand up 0.5%, production up 16.5% (detailed report)
According to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), May vehicle sales in Thailand increased 0.5% year over year (YoY) to 65,088 units from the same period in 2022. Sales in January-May 2023 reached 341,691 units, slid 4.9% from the same period in 2022. In addition to the more strictness in auto loan approval process of financial institutions, especially for trucks, amid the rising household debt, the negative factors mentioned by the FTI included the country’s political uncertainty. A spark of hope is expected to follow the formation of a new government, with the new cabinet set to be in place by August.
According to data compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT), by maker sales in May, Toyota was down 4.0% to 21,296 units. Isuzu was down 15.6% to 13,281 units and Honda was up 33.0% to 6,697 units. Mitsubishi sales were down 36.3% to 3,005 units and Ford sales were up 31.7% to 2,993 units.
By body type, passenger cars were up 29.4% year over year to 25,985 units. Commercial vehicle sales were down 12.4% to 39,103 units. Pickup truck (including PPV) sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were down 19.2% to 27,323 units.
The Isuzu D-Max was the best-selling model (registration base) in May with 13,120 units, followed by Toyota Hilux with 11,063 units, Toyota Yaris ATIV with 4,572 units, Honda City with 4,379 units and Honda HR-V with 2,547 units. BYD’s ATTO 3 electric SUV remains at 9th with 2,025 units.
The FTI announced that new vehicle production in May was 150,532 units, up 16.5% YoY. Vehicle production for domestic sales and exports contributed 40.4% and 59.6% respectively. In January-May 2023, vehicle production increased 6.7% to 775,955 units.
Vehicle exports in May 2023 were at 86,358 units, up 12.2% YoY. The vehicle export value in May was THB 55.0 billion, up 18.9% year over year. The YoY increase was attributable to a low base (with a more intense semiconductor shortage situation in 2022 amid several crises such as the Russia-Ukraine war and the Shanghai COVID-19 lockdown). In May, exports to almost all countries which are Thailand trading partners improved, except car exports to Australia that were delayed as many of them were found to be contaminated with plant materials (mainly grasses), insects, mud, clay, etc. and must be thoroughly cleaned to meet with the Australia Quarantine Inspection (AQIS) strict standards before exporting. Vehicle exports in the first 5 months of 2023 reached 439,990 units, up 17.1% YoY.

*There are cases where recently released data and detailed information in the database do not match up for reasons including different information sources, and discrepancies between preliminary reports and confirmed data.

April vehicle sales in Thailand down 6.1%, production down 0.1% (detailed report)
According to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), April vehicle sales in Thailand decreased 6.1% year over year (YoY) to 59,530 units from the same period in 2022. The negative factors mentioned by the FTI include the more strictness in auto loan approval process of financial institutions, amid the rising household debt. Sales in January-April 2023 reached 276,603 units, slid 6.1% from the same period in 2022.
According to data compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT), by maker sales in April, Toyota was down 9.8% to 19,565 units. Isuzu was down 19.6% to 13,336 units and Honda was up 25.5% to 6,409 units. Ford sales were up 13.2% to 2,871 units and Mitsubishi sales were down 26.1% to 2,858 units.
By body type, passenger cars were down 1.4% year over year to 20,203 units. Commercial vehicle sales were down 8.4% to 39,327 units. Pickup truck (including PPV) sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were down 20.3% to 26,818 units.
The Isuzu D-Max was the best-selling model (registration base) in April with 10,622 units, followed by Toyota Hilux with 8,906 units, Toyota Yaris ATIV with 5,053 units, Honda City with 3,381 units and Ford Ranger with 2,200 units. BYD’s ATTO 3 electric SUV ranked 9th for the second consecutive month with 1,743 units.
The FTI announced that new vehicle production in April was 117,636 units, down 0.1% YoY. Vehicle production for domestic sales and exports contributed 42.3% and 57.7% respectively. In January-April 2023, vehicle production increased 4.6% to 625,432 units.
Vehicle exports in April 2023 were at 79,940 units, jumped 43.5% YoY. The vehicle export value in April was THB 50.2 billion, up 49.8% year over year. Significant increase is owing to a low base (with several crises in 2022, including the Russia-Ukraine war and the Shanghai COVID-19 lockdown, that also caused chips shortage). In April, exports to Asia, Australia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe improved. Vehicle exports in the first 4 months of 2023 increased 18.3% YoY to reach 353,632 units.

March vehicle sales in Thailand down 8.4%, production up 4.2% (detailed report)
According to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), March vehicle sales in Thailand decreased 8.4% year over year (YoY) to 79,943 units from the same period in 2022. Sales in March surged 11.7% MoM, pushed by the 44th Bangkok International Motor Show held from March 22 to April 2. However, the negative factors pointed by the FTI include the more strictness in auto loan approval process of financial institutions, especially for the pickup trucks, amid the rising household debt. Sales in January-March 2023 reached 217,073 units, slid 6.1% from the same period in 2022.
According to data compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT), by maker sales in March, Toyota was down 14.3% to 25,713 units. Isuzu was down 21.4% to 17,133 units and Honda was up 1.8% to 10,185 units. Ford sales were up 46.6% to 4,077 units and Mitsubishi sales were down 12.2% to 4,072 units.
By body type, passenger cars were up 0.2% year over year to 29,835 units. Commercial vehicle sales were down 12.8% to 50,108 units. Pickup truck (including PPV) sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were down 22.2% to 36,066 units.
The Isuzu D-Max was the best-selling model (registration base) in March with 14,795 units, followed by Toyota Hilux with 11,628 units, Toyota Yaris ATIV with 6,724 units, Honda City with 4,930 units and Ford Ranger with 3,144 units.
The FTI announced that new vehicle production in March reached 179,848 units, up 4.2% YoY, supported by the availability of more auto parts, especially semiconductors. Vehicle production for domestic sales and exports contributed 43.85% and 56.15% respectively. In January-March 2023, vehicle production increased 5.8% to 507,787 units.
Vehicle exports in March 2023 were at 98,381 units, up 4.8% YoY. The vehicle export value in March was THB 60.6 billion, up 8.6% year over year. Vehicle exports in the first 3 months of 2023 increased 12.6% YoY to reach 273,692 units. The mentioned ongoing problems included the shortage of space on a RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) ship, as well as the delay in car exports to Australia, as many vehicles were found to be contaminated with plant materials (mainly grasses) and must be thoroughly cleaned to meet with the Australia Quarantine Inspection (AQIS) strict standards before exporting.

February vehicle sales in Thailand down 3.9%, production up 6.4% (detailed report)
According to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), February vehicle sales in Thailand decreased 3.9% year over year (YoY) to 71,551 units from the same period in 2022. The FTI is sanguine about the 44th Bangkok International Motor Show held from March 22 to April 2 with many promotional campaigns and new car models that is expected to boost vehicle sales in March and April. Vehicle sales in the first 2 months of 2023 reached 137,130 units, down 4.7% YoY.
According to data compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT), by maker sales in February, Toyota was up 2.5% to 25,612 units. Isuzu was down 23.9% to 15,375 units and Honda was up 22.8% to 8,705 units. Mitsubishi sales were down 21.7% to 3,606 units and Ford sales were up 73.6% to 3,593 units.
By body type, passenger cars were up 10.1% year over year to 24,867 units. Commercial vehicle sales were down 10.0% to 46,684 units. Pickup truck (including PPV) sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were down 18.8% to 33,635 units.
The Isuzu D-Max was the best-selling model (registration base) in February with 14,786 units, followed by Toyota Hilux with 11,513 units, Toyota Yaris ATIV with 4,958 units, Honda City with 4,820 units and Ford Ranger with 3,476 units.
The FTI announced that new vehicle production in February reached 165,612 units, up 6.4% YoY, thanks to the availability of more auto parts, especially semiconductors. Vehicle production for domestic sales and exports contributed 42.3% and 57.7% respectively. In January-February 2023, vehicle production increased 6.7% to 327,939 units.
Vehicle exports in the month of February increased 11.4% YoY to 88,525 units . Exports to Asia, Australia and Oceania, and South America improved. Yet, FTI revealed that the shortage of space on a RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) ship issue continued. Furthermore, car exports to Australia were delayed. Many vehicles were found to be contaminated with plant materials (mainly grasses) and must be thoroughly cleaned to meet with the Australia Quarantine Inspection (AQIS) strict standards before exporting. The vehicle export value in February was THB 54.8 billion, up 20.3% year over year. In the first 2 months of 2023, vehicle exports from Thailand increased 17.4% YoY to 175,311 units.
