By body type, passenger cars were down 35.0% year over year to 13,845 units. Commercial vehicle sales were down 40.5% to 28,331 units. Pickup truck (including PPV) sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were down 40.9% to 21,875 units.
The FTI announced that new vehicle production in August was 104,144 units, the lowest in 13 months, 11.2% decrease from August 2020. There is a shortage in semiconductors and other auto parts as the spread of coronavirus caused parts makers, both domestic and overseas, to temporarily close their plants. January - August production was up 31.9% to 1,071,908 units.
Vehicle exports in August were at 59,571 units, the lowest in 4 months, increased 3.8% year over year but down 15.6% month over month. According to FTI, production of some car models was suspended following chips and some parts shortage. Besides, with COVID-19 situation in Asia getting worse, vehicle exports to Asia and Australia/Oceania markets witnessed decline from the same period in 2020. However, as car production plants in some of Thailand’s trading partner countries have already started retuning to operation, Thailand’s exports of engine and other auto parts increased YoY. The vehicle export value in August was THB 35.7 billion, up 3.2% year over year. Vehicle exports from January to August were up 31.9% to 603,650 units.
On September 23, FTI revealed that its 2021 projection for domestic car sales of 750,000 units and vehicle exports target of 800,000-850,000 units are still maintained. FTI also keeps its vehicle production target of 1.55 million-1.6 million units. After the lockdown easing from September 1, clients began to visit showrooms. Auto centers started getting back to normal. According FTI’s auto industry club, Thailand International Motor Expo in December is expected to help raising sales in 2021.

July vehicle sales in Thailand down 11.6%, production up 37.5% (detailed report)
According to MarkLines Data Center, July vehicle sales in Thailand decreased 11.6% year over year to 52,442 units and 15.1% month over month. The drop was attributed to the COVID-19 lockdown from the mid of July, causing customers to be more cautious with their spending, as well as car deliveries’ postponement or cancelation. Other negative factors included the more strictness in auto loan approval process of financial institutions and lacking of some car models due to parts shortage. Current loan rejection rate is around 50%, up from 5-10% before pandemic.
January - July sales were up 9.7% to 425,633 units.
By maker sales in July, Toyota was down 2.9% to 17,040 units. Isuzu was down 11.6% to 13,680 units and Honda was up 15.3% to 6,958 units. Mitsubishi sales were down 34.9% to 3,205 units and MG sales were down 2.9% to 2,246 units.
By body type, passenger cars were down 9.8% year over year to 16,689 units. Commercial vehicle sales were down 12.4% to 35,753 units. Pickup truck (including PPV) sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were down 15.0% to 27,816 units.
The FTI announced that new vehicle production in July was 122,852 units, 37.5% increase from the low figure in July 2020 amid the spread of coronavirus. Compared to June 2021, it was down 8.5% due to a shortage in semiconductors and other auto parts in some car models. January - July production was up 39.1% to 967,453 units.
Vehicle exports in July were up 42.4% to 70,590 units year over year but down 15.0% month over month. FTI said vehicle shipment to the Middle East, Europe, and African markets dropped due to the new wave of coronavirus, while auto sales decline was also recorded in several Thailand’s trading partner countries. However, as car production plants in some of those countries have already started returning to operation, Thailand’s exports of engine and other auto parts also increased YoY. Vehicle exports from January to July were up 36.0% to 544,079 units.

June vehicle sales in Thailand up 11.9%, production up 87.2% (detailed report)
According to MarkLines Data Center, June vehicle sales in Thailand increased 11.9% year over year to 64,974 units.
January - June sales were up 13.6% to 373,191 units. Negative factors cited by FTI still include the third wave of COVID-19 that limits the economic activities and lower customers’ purchasing power, the more strictness in auto loan approval process of financial institutions, as well as lacking of some car models due to parts shortage.
By maker sales in June, Toyota was up 67.1% to 22,337 units. Isuzu was down 15.4% to 14,098 units and Honda was up 26.1% to 7,339 units. Mitsubishi sales were down 1.4% to 3,944 units and Mazda sales were up 13.7% to 3,005 units.
By body type, passenger cars were up 8.3% year over year to 22,538 units. Commercial vehicle sales were up 13.9% to 42,436 units. Pickup truck (including PPV) sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were up 12.1% to 33,169 units.
The FTI announced that new vehicle production in June was 134,245 units, 87.2% increase from the low figure in June 2020 amid the spread of coronavirus. January - June production was up 39.3% to 844,601 units.
Vehicle exports in June were up 65.9% to 83,022 units. FTI said vehicle sales growth in June can be seen in Thailand’s trading partner countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Europe. The export value was THB 49.3 billion, up 68.5% year over year. Vehicle exports from January to June were up 35.1% to 473,489 units.
FTI decided to revise up its projection on 2021 vehicle production from 1.5 million units to 1.55-1.6 million units, following good export prospects, although the domestic car industry is expected to be greatly impacted by the third wave of the pandemic. FTI said vehicle exports target has been increased from 750,000 units to 800,000 – 850,000 units, while domestic sales projection remains at 750,000 units.

According to MarkLines Data Center, February vehicle sales in Thailand decreased 10.9% year over year to 58,960 units, down for the second month in a row. The decline followed Thailand customers’ concern over the new wave of coronavirus pandemic occurring in many provinces since December 2020, causing customers to be more careful on their spending as well as more strictness in auto loan approval process of financial institutions. The Bangkok International Motor Show in March is expected to help driving local auto sales growth.
January - February sales were down 16.3% to 114,168 units.
By brand sales in February, Isuzu was up 13.8% to 16,447 units. Toyota was down 14.6% to 15,860 units and Honda was down 7.7% to 9,007 units. Mitsubishi sales were down 39.0% to 3,462 units and Mazda sales were up 2.5% to 3,076 units.
By body type, passenger cars were down 30.7% year over year to 18,969 units. Commercial vehicle sales were down 2.3% to 39,991 units. Pickup truck sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were down 6.6% to 31,169 units.
The FTI announced that new vehicle production in February was 155,200 units, 3.1% increase year over year. January - February production was down 1.2% to 303,318 units.
Vehicle exports in February were down 16.5% to 79,470 units, down again after increasing in January for the first time in 19 months.
