2020 vehicle sales in Thailand down 21.4%, production down 29.1% (detailed report)
According to MarkLines Data Center, December vehicle sales in Thailand increased 11.3% year over year to 104,089 units, marking another time that monthly vehicle sales surpass 100,000 units after Thailand's first-car scheme ended, reflecting recovery sign in Thailand’s economy thanks to the government’s measures to support those impacted by the coronavirus pandemic as well as the 37th Thailand Motor Expo which helped boosting up local auto market. 2020 full year vehicle sales in Thailand declined 21.4% year over year to 792,146 units.
By brand sales in 2020, Toyota was down 26.6% to 243,763 units. Isuzu was up 7.7% to 181,194 units and Honda was down 26.1% to 93,041 units. Mitsubishi sales were down 34.9% to 57,409 units, and Nissan sales were down 30.8% to 44,558 units.
By body type sales in 2020, passenger cars were down 31.0% year over year to 274,789 units, while commercial vehicles were down 15.1% to 517,357 units. Pickup sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were down 19.5% to 396,115 units.

New vehicle production in December increased 6.5% to 142,969 units and the 2020 new vehicle production declined 29.1% to 1,426,970 units.

Vehicle exports in December decreased 5.2% to 68,481 units. Exports saw decline in almost all countries which are Thailand trading partners, except in Asia, Australia, and Oceania markets. The 2020 vehicle export declined 30.2% to 735,842 units valued at THB 411 billion, decreased 24.7%.

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) forecasts that vehicle production in Thailand are expected to decrease 5.1% to 1.5 million units in 2021 with 750,000 units for domestic sales and exports respectively. FTI explained that this production target was set in accordance with the concern over the second wave of the spread of coronavirus in Thailand and other countries, which are still delaying the full recovery of Thailand and its trading partners’ economics. Moreover, several carmakers in Thailand and overseas countries are now facing parts shortage issue, which caused them to halt production of some car models temporarily.
