German passenger car sales down 5.7% in November 2023
On December 5, the Germany Federal Motor Vehicle Office (KBA) announced that new passenger car registrations in November decreased 5.7% over the previous year to 245,701 units.
In November, VW sales of 47,279 units (19.2% market share) increased 1.0% year over year and Mercedes sales of 24,446 units (9.9% share) decreased 11.4%. BMW sales of 21,981 units (8.9% share) increased 15.8%. Audi sales of 21,603 units (8.8% share) decreased 2.0% and Skoda sales of 15,836 units (6.4% share) increased 41.1%. Opel sales of 12,571 units (5.1% share) decreased 1.8%.
In November, gasoline-powered vehicles accounted for a 33.3% market share to 81,734 units. Hybrid vehicles had a 78,587 units and EV had a 18.3% market share to 44,942 units. Diesel vehicles had a 16.1% market share to 39,470 units.
At the end of last year, as a result of the announcement of the reduction in the environmental bonus for purely BEV and the complete phase-out for PHEV, there was a high number of early new registrations in order to still be able to benefit from the funding. Due to the correspondingly high comparative values from the previous year, new registrations fell sharply in the past month.
Sales of 26,364 trucks in November represented a decrease of 2.3% over the previous year, while sales of 535 buses were a 5.1% increase.
The VDA announced that monthly passenger car exports of 299,600 units had increased 5% and domestic production of 402,800 units had increased 2% year over year.

German passenger car sales up 24.8% in June 2023
On July 5, the Germany Federal Motor Vehicle Office (KBA) announced that new passenger car registrations in June increased 24.8% over the previous year to 280,139 units.
In June, VW sales of 53,210 units (19.0% market share) increased 22.4% year over year and Mercedes sales of 25,207 units (9.0% share) increased 29.9%. Audi sales of 24,923 units (8.9% share) increased 42.5%. BMW sales of 19,595 units (7.0% share) decreased 0.6% and Skoda sales of 14,758 units (5.3% share) increased 19.8%. Opel sales of 14,506 units (5.2% share) increased 6.6%.
In June, gasoline-powered vehicles accounted for a 35.6% market share. Hybrid vehicles had a 27.9% market share to 78,249 units and EV had a 18.9% market share to 52,988 units. Diesel vehicles had a 16.7% market share.
Sales of 26,230 trucks in June represented an increase of 28.1% over the previous year, while sales of 487 buses were a 36.4% increase.
The VDA announced that monthly passenger car exports of 296,500 units increased 28% and domestic production of 389,900 units increased 31% year over year.
According to VDA, despite the positive trend in recent months following primarily the efforts to relax the supply chains, the production level is still significantly below the pre-crisis level. In the first six months of the current year, 10 % fewer vehicles were manufactured than in the first half of the pre-Corona year 2019. The high order backlog is slowly being reduced, but is still well above the long-term average.

German passenger car sales up 16.6% in March 2023
On April 5, the Germany Federal Motor Vehicle Office (KBA) announced that new passenger car registrations in March increased 16.6% over the previous year to 281,361 units.
Despite the solid growth rate, the gap to the pre-crisis level is still large: Compared to the first quarter of 2019, new registrations in the first quarter of the current year are almost a quarter lower.
In March, VW sales of 49,894 units (17.7% market share) increased 29.5% year over year and Mercedes sales of 28,108 units (10.0% share) increased 38.1%.
Audi sales of 27,699 units (9.8% share) increased 27.3%.
BMW sales of 21,246 units (7.6% share) increased 7.3% and Skoda sales of 16,040 units (5.7% share) increased 30.9%.
Opel sales of 13,317 units (4.7% share) increased 12.8%.
In March, gasoline-powered vehicles accounted for a 36.7% market share to 103,271 units, Hybrid vehicles had a 29.9% market share to 84,029 units, EV had a 15.7% market share to 44,125 units, Diesel vehicles had a 17.3% market share to 48,597 units.
Sales of 27,877 trucks in March represented an increase of 12.8% over the previous year while sales of 463 buses were a 20.3% increase.
The VDA announced that monthly passenger car exports of 338,800 units had increased 64% and domestic production of 441,900 units had increased 67% year over year.
Despite the positive trend in recent months which is due in particular to the gradually improving supply situation with primary and intermediate products, the production level remains significantly below the pre-crisis level. March 2022 was the weakest March in terms of production in almost 50 years.
After passenger car production in Germany increased somewhat more than expected in the first quarter of this year, the VDA is adjusting its production forecast for 2023. So far, 3.69 million cars were forecast (+6 percent compared to 2022), now 3.79 million cars are assumed (+9 % compared to 2022).

German passenger car sales up 2.8% in February 2023
On March 3, the Germany Federal Motor Vehicle Office (KBA) announced that new passenger car registrations in February increased 2.8% over the previous year to 206,210 units.
This compensated for the negative start to the year in January 2023, so that after the first two months of this year the German market as a whole is back at the previous year's level. However the German passenger car market is still lagging behind, a good 23% fewer than in February 2019.
In February, VW sales of 39,519 units (19.2% market share) increased 7.1% year over year and Mercedes sales of 21,682 units (10.5% share) increased 17.1%.
Audi sales of 18,277 units (8.9% share) increased 11.6%.
BMW sales of 14,885 units (7.2% share) decreased 4.7% and Skoda sales of 13,745 units (6.7% share) increased 7.9%.
Opel sales of 9,637 units (4.7% share) decreased 17.6%.
In February, gasoline-powered vehicles accounted for a 36.5% market share. Hybrid vehicles had a 28.6% market share to 58,980 units and EV had a 15.7% market share to 32,475 units. Diesel vehicles had a 18.6% market share.
PHEV sales droped 45% compared to February 2022. The state subsidy that expired at the end of the year continues to put pressure on the number of new registrations in this segment.
Sales of 21,866 trucks in February represented an increase of 6.5% over the previous year, while sales of 407 buses were a 26.8% increase.
The VDA announced that monthly passenger car exports of 278,000 units had increased 24% and domestic production of 382,600 units had increased 24% year over year.
Despite the positive trend in recent months, which is due in particular to the gradually improving supply situation with primary and intermediate products, the production level is still significantly below the pre-crisis level. In the first two months of 2023, 13% fewer vehicles were manufactured than in 2019.
