Mexico auto production falls 28.8% in February due to gas outages, chip shortages
OEMs built 238,868 light vehicles in Mexico in February 2021, resulting in a 28.8% decrease compared to the 335,708 units built in the same month of 2020, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
Gas shortages brought on by winter storms affected auto production in Mexico, as it had in many southern U.S. states in the month of February.
The continuing global shortage of semiconductors also acted to diminish production in many factories.
The OEMs with production increases in February included only BMW with a 16.0% increase to 5,636 units and Toyota with an 11.8% increase to 17,157 units.
OEMs which declined in February compared to the previous year included Audi with a 27.3% decrease to 11,193 units; Chrysler (Stellantis)* with a 53.1% decrease to 24,075; Ford with a 29.6% decrease to 17,296 units; GM with a 44.2% decrease to 41,575 units; Honda with a 4.6% decrease to 12,165 units; JAC with a 61.6% decrease to 214 units; Kia with a 20.0% decrease to 16,800 units; Mazda with a 43.1% decrease to 9,303 units; Mercedes-Benz with a 19.4% decrease to 6,508 units; Nissan with a 17.2% decrease to 49,364 units; and VW with an 11.7% decrease to 27,582 units.
