Mexico auto production down 9.9 % in December, up 14.2% for full-year 2023
OEMs built 215,923 light vehicles in Mexico in December 2023, a 9.9% decrease from the same month in 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) on January 10, 2024.
OEMs with production increases in December include Mercedes-Benz with a 75.3% increase to 4,589 units; Honda with a 73.9% increase to 11,155 units; Ford with a 21.3% increase to 27,398 units; BMW with a 14.9% increase to 5,984 units; Nissan with a 6.0% increase to 35,791 units, Mazda with a 5.7% increase to 13,996 units, and Kia with a 2.4% increase to 16,900 units.
OEMs which declined in December compared to the previous year included Toyota with a 89.7% decrease to 1,576 units; Audi with a 45.0% decrease to 7,750 units; VW with a 35.0% decrease to 14,824 units; General Motors with a 20.2% decrease to 42,310 units; JAC with a 11.3% decrease to 2,097 units; and Chrysler with a 0.1% decrease to 31,553 units.
The 3,779,234 total units produced in full-year 2023 were up 14.2% from 2022.
OEMs with production increases for all of 2023 include BMW with a 85.1% increase to 117,462 units; Nissan with a 57.5% increase to 615,751 units; Mazda with a 36.7% increase to 202,506 units; Honda with a 32.4% increase to 167,249 units; JAC with a 31.9% increase to 22,519 units; Ford with a 20.4% increase to 365,365 units, VW with a 15.7% increase to 349,227 units and Chrysler with a 12.7% increase to 467,542 units
OEMs which declined compared to full-year 2022 included Mercedes-Benz with a 22.5% decrease to 67,846 units; Toyota with a 6.8% decrease to 250,015 units; Kia with a 3.4% decrease to 256,000 units; General Motors with a 2.8% decrease to 722,631 units and Audi with a 1.6% decrease to 175,121 units.
"We have really positive outlook on this year," AMIA head Odracir Barquera said in a press conference, adding a boost in production was expected from electric vehicles. "For both sales and exports we're also expecting the trend of positive growth we've seen (in 2023) to continue," Barquera added.

Mexican auto production up 18.1% in November
OEMs built 329,415 light vehicles in Mexico in November 2023, resulting in a 18.1% increase compared to the 278,824 units built in the same month of 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
OEMs with production increases in November included Nissan with a 76.8% increase to 56,075 units; Chrysler with a 16.7% increase to 38,452 units; Volkswagen with a 33.6% increase to 34,964 units; Ford with a 29.0% increase to 30,511 units; Kia with a 0.4% increase to 22,500 units; Mazda with a 32.5% increase to 18,568 units; Honda with a 124.8% increase to 16,771 units; BMW with a 55.0% increase to 10,891 units ; and JAC with a 85.9% increase to 2,419 units.
OEMs whose production declined in November compared to the previous year included GM with a 2.6% decrease to 69,376 units; Audi with a 1.8% decrease to 14,030 units; Toyota with a 52.7% decrease to 9,947 units and Mercedes-Benz with a 12.7% decrease to 4,911 units.

Mexican auto production up 35.8% in October
OEMs built 378,129 light vehicles in Mexico in October 2023, resulting in a 35.8% increase compared to the 278,506 units built in the same month of 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
OEMs with production increases in October included GM with a 35.7% increase to 79,089 units; Nissan with a 116.7% increase to 62,835 units; Volkswagen with a 86.5% increase to 45,450 units; Chrysler with a 47.4% increase to 43,539 units; Toyota with a 1.0% increase to 26,573 units; Kia with a 1.1% increase to 23,000 units; Mazda with a 30.5% increase to 19,122 units; Honda with a 85.4% increase to 17,802 units ; BMW with a 42.1% increase to 12,023 units; and JAC with a 10.7% increase to 2,325 units.
OEMs whose production declined in October compared to the previous year included Ford Motor with a 9.5% decrease to 24,615 units; Audi with a 14.0% decrease to 16,333 units; and Mercedes-Benz with a 25.1% decrease to 5,423 units.

OEMs built 338,899 light vehicles in Mexico in September 2023, resulting in a 24.0% increase compared to the 273,329 units built in the same month of 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
OEMs with production increases in September included BMW with a 89.4% increase to 12,566 units; Chrysler (FCA) with a 5.2% increase to 37,242 units; Ford with a 33.7% increase to 40,085 units; GM with a 31.7% increase to 67,143 units; Honda with a 16.1% increase to 13,892 units; Mazda with a 3.2% increase to 16,135 units; Nissan with a 79.5% increase to 49,749 units; and Volkswagen with a 57.1% increase to 31,670 units.
OEMs whose production declined in September compared to the previous year included Audi with a 9.0% decrease to 14,973 units; JAC with a 8.8% decrease to 1,869 units; Kia with a 3.7% decrease to 22,400 units; Mercedes-Benz with a 19.1% decrease to 6,357 units; and Toyota with a 1.7% decrease to 24,818 units.

Mexican auto production increases 2.8% in August
OEMs built 325,676 light vehicles in Mexico in August 2023, resulting in a 2.8% increase compared to the 316,815 units built in the same month of 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
OEMs with production increases in August included BMW with a 33.9% increase to 9,313 units; Chrysler with a 1.4% increase to 44,234 units; Honda with a 17.3% increase to 13,818 units; JAC with a 136.1% increase to 1,740 units; Kia with a 0.4% increase to 24,492 units; Nissan with a 70.2% increase to 59,903 units; Toyota with a 6.3% increase to 25,729 units; and Volkswagen with a 7.5% increase to 35,054 units.
OEMs whose production declined in August compared to the previous year included Audi with a 25.4% decrease to 12,002 units Ford with a 1.7% decrease to 25,661 units; GM with a 24.2% decrease to 53,743 units; Mazda with a 1.4% decrease to 14,199 units; and Mercedes-Benz with a 41.1% decrease to 5,788 units.

Mexican auto production up 13.2% in July
OEMs built 294,350 light vehicles in Mexico in July 2023, resulting in a 13.2% increase compared to the 259,992 units built in the same month of 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), with significant increases reported by many manufacturers compared to the same month one year ago.
OEMs with production increases in July included Audi with a 27.3% increase to 14,026 units; BMW with a 18,429.2% increase to 12,044 units; Ford with a 91.9% increase to 34,211 units; Honda with a 47.0% increase to 15,489 units; JAC with a 7.1% increase to 1,653 units; Mazda with a 22.1% increase to 16,688 units; Mercedes-Benz with a 125.6% increase to 7,498 units; Nissan with a 103.2% increase to 47,764 units; and Toyota with a 9.0% increase to 19,863 units.
OEMs whose production declined in July compared to the previous year included Chrysler with a 17.0% decrease to 31,069 units; GM with a 30.8% decrease to 45,508 units; Kia with a 15.5% decrease to 16,900 units; and Volkswagen with a 14.7% decrease to 31,627 units.

OEMs built 331,707 light vehicles in Mexico in June 2023, resulting in a 16.3% increase compared to the 285,317 units built in the same month of 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), with significant increases reported by many manufacturers compared to the same month one year ago.
OEMs with production increases in June included Audi with a 152.4% increase to 16,578 units; BMW with a 109.8% increase to 12,221 units; Ford with a 67.7% increase to 38,207 units; Honda with a 124.7% increase to 15,951 units; JAC with a 46.8% increase to 1,647 units; Mazda with a 30.7% increase to 16,390 units; Nissan with a 80.3% increase to 60,282 units; Toyota with a 17.0% increase to 25,346 units; and Volkswagen with a 33.6% increase to 37,049 units.
OEMs whose production declined in June compared to the previous year included Chrysler with a 6.5% decrease to 31,686 units; GM with a 37.5% decrease to 47,655 units; Kia with an 8.5% decrease to 23,800 units; and Mercedes-Benz with a 52.9% decrease to 4,895 units.

OEMs built 344,201 light vehicles in Mexico in May 2023, resulting in a 25.0% increase compared to the 275,436 units built in the same month of 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), with significant increases reported by many manufacturers compared to the same month one year ago.
OEMs with production increases in May included Audi with a 12.6% increase to 18,725 units; BMW with a 276.6% increase to 12,137 units; Chrysler with a 10.7% increase to 40,521 units; Ford with a 70.6% increase to 40,463 units; GM with a 22.4% increase to 69,327 units; Honda with a 221.4% increase to 10,523 units; JAC with a 8.2% increase to 1,635 units; Mazda with a 112.2% increase to 15,013 units; Nissan with a 50.0% increase to 56,659 units; and Toyota with a 0.5% increase to 27,593 units.
OEMs whose production declined in May compared to the previous year included Kia with a 3.4% decrease to 23,000 units; Mercedes-Benz with a 31.0% decrease to 6,333 units; and Volkswagen with a 22.0% decrease to 22,272 units.

Mexican auto production jumps 17.1% in April
OEMs built 294,550 light vehicles in Mexico in April 2023, resulting in a 17.1% increase compared to the 251,547 units built in the same month of 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), with increases over the same period one year ago recorded by all companies except for two.
OEMs with production increases in April included Audi with a 7.5% increase to 15,984 units; BMW with a 75.8% increase to 9,791 units; Ford with a 20.2% increase to 29,649 units; GM with a 39.4% increase to 60,102 units; Honda with a 8.7% increase to 11,547 units; JAC with a 20.3% increase to 1,409 units; Mazda with a 184.5% increase to 14,106 units; Nissan with a 7.2% increase to 36,785 units; Toyota with a 22.0% increase to 23,889 units and Volkswagen with a 11.4% increase to 25,835 units.
The two OEMs which declined in April compared to the previous year included Chrysler with a 5.0% decrease to 40,332 units and Kia with a 10.6% decrease to 18,600 units.

Mexican auto production grows 13.1% in March
OEMs built 346,124 light vehicles in Mexico in March 2023, resulting in a 13.1% increase compared to the 305,976 units built in the same month of 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
The OEMs with production increases in March included BMW with a 58.7% increase to 8,377 units; Chrysler with a 19.8% increase to 49,596 units; Ford with a 1.2% increase to 32,572 units; JAC with a 34.5% increase to 1,485 units; Kia with a 5.2% increase to 22,100 units Mazda with a 85.2% increase to 22,697 units; Nissan with a 119.6% increase to 57,902 units; and Volkswagen with a 7.9% increase to 33,445 units.
OEMs which declined in March compared to the previous year included Audi with a 11.1% decrease to 15,607 units; General Motors with a 5.4% decrease to 64,447 units; Honda with a 26.6% decrease to 12,244 units; Mercedes-Benz with a 42.7% decrease to 5,239 units; and Toyota with a 14.6% decrease to 20,413 units.
Scotiabank expects that the US economic performance will play a key role in Mexican growth and is likely to be a challenge for the Mexican economy. As expected, Mexico's central bank raised interest rates to 11% in February 2023.
Tesla’s Gigafactory Mexico to be open in 2024 is expected by experts and government officials to boost cross-border trade by USD 15 billion.

Mexico auto production rises 9.9% in February
OEMs built 295,787 light vehicles in Mexico in February 2023, resulting in a 9.9% increase compared to the 269,258 units built in the same month of 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
The OEMs with production increases in February included BMW with a 312.3% increase to 6,997 units; Chrysler with a 49.0% increase to 42,418 units; General Motors with a 3.5% increase to 67,749 units; JAC with a 91.5% increase to 1,580 units; Mazda with a 35.8% increase to 16,684 units; Nissan with a 13.0% increase to 46,769 units; and Volkswagen with a 60.0% increase to 21,718 units.
OEMs which declined in February compared to the previous year included Audi with a 5.0% decrease to 13,271 units; Ford with a 18.0% decrease to 19,843 units; Honda with a 10.2% decrease to 13,364 units; Mercedes-Benz with a 40,0% decrease to 5,228 units; and Toyota with a 15.0% decrease to 20,566 units.
Kia production was approximately the same as last February at 19,600 units.
Scotiabank expects that the US economic performance will play a key role in Mexican growth and is likely to be a challenge for the Mexican economy. About two-thirds of the Mexican recovery from the 2020 pandemic low is accounted for by exports to the US, which is now broadly expected to fall into a technical recession in 2023. The bank also anticipates that Banxico’s overnight rate will rise to 11% in 2023.
On March 6, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed Monterrey as the location for that the upcoming Gigafactory Mexico, which will focus on building the company’s next-gen vehicle. The company currently has capacity to build about 2 million cars a year at four factories, in Fremont, California; Shanghai, China; Austin, Texas; and Berlin, Germany. It has set a goal of eventually building 20 million annually by 2030.

Mexico auto production increases 2.4% in January
OEMs built 280,315 light vehicles in Mexico in January 2023, resulting in a 2.4% increase compared to the 273,810 units built in the same month of 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
The OEMs with production increases in January included Chrysler with a 70.8% increase to 36,900 units; JAC with a 113.7% increase to 2,660 units; Mazda with a 41.4% increase to 18,908 units; Nissan with a 22.8% increase to 45,237 units; Toyota with a 11.6% increase to 23,703 units; and Volkswagen with a 4.6% increase to 15,319 units.
OEMs which declined in January compared to the previous year included Audi with a 9.3% decrease to 15,842 units; BMW with a 31.4% decrease to 5,165 units; Ford with a 22.4% decrease to 22,140 units; General Motors with a 11.5% decrease to 56,182 units; Honda with a 34.4% decrease to 10,495 units; Kia with a 7.3% decrease to 22,700 units; and Mercedes-Benz with a 31.2% decrease to 5,064 units.
