In 2017, the Leaf EV underwent its first Full Model Change (FMC) since its initial launch in 2010. This report is based on our coverage of the Leaf teardown analysis sponsored by the Saitama Industrial Promotion Public Corporation’s Next-Generation Automobile Support Center in Saitama prefecture held on September 7th (on-site teardown) and October 2nd (parts confirmation meeting).
The EV system is a mechatronic integration of an ePT (electrified powertrain) with motors and inverters initiated in 2012, with battery improvements implemented in 2015, followed by an additional improvement in inverter efficiency in the current FMC. As a result, the LEAF has become the technological benchmark for EVs. The objective of this report is to take another comprehensive look at the base technologies of the Leaf’s electric drivetrain.
