BAIC Motor reveals the near supercar-level ARCFOX-7, BYD's Dynasty series familiarizes EVs
This final installment of the series on the 2016 Beijing Motor Show continues from the previous report, which looked at Japanese and Korean Manufacturers. This report will focus on environmentally friendly vehicles from Chinese automobile manufacturers, as well as their major world-premiere models.
BAIC Automotive Group Co., Ltd., which has its head office in Beijing, revealed its new policy aimed at 2020 and exhibited concept cars. Moreover, BAIC Group displayed more of its own brand vehicles at this exhibition than it had at any previous motor show held in China, and many attendees came to its booths. China’s number one automobile maker, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation Group, revealed a connected car at the New Venue of the China International Exhibition Center, and actively promoted new energy vehicles at the Old Venue.
BYD Company, which sold the most new energy vehicles in China in 2015 (PHEVs and EVs), emphasized the catchphrase “vehicles for the people of China,” and exhibited vehicles from their “Dynasty Series,” such as the Qin and Yuan. Chery Automobile Group revealed cars like the X3 connected car targeted at younger generations from their affiliate, the Cowin Auto brand, and an EV concept car from Qoros, a joint venture company established with an Israeli investment firm.
There were 815 thousand visitors at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show, a decrease of 35 thousand in comparison to the 2014 Show. However, with the number of new models introduced by each manufacturer and nationwide initiatives for new energy vehicles, there was a noticeable air of excitement.

BAIC Motor Corporation: Announcing new energy vehicle mid-term strategy, displaying the concept car ARCFOX series
At this show, which was held right on its doorstep, BAIC exhibited more own brand vehicles than it has at any previous motor show held in China, and its booths were full of attendees.
The BAIC New Energy Company, which manufactures new energy vehicles under the umbrella of Beijing Automobile Works Group, released the “Hummingbird Plan” (hummingbirds are the world’s smallest birds, and are recognized as a symbol of love and happiness), with the theme of “Innovation for Your Imagination, Technology, Dreams.” Specifically, BAIC New Energy Co. Ltd. incorporated four concepts: e-Motion Design (emotional design), e-Motion Drive (super electric drives), Light Tech (ultra-lightweight technology), and i-Link (super-intelligent network technology). The company will introduce 18 new energy vehicle models into the market by 2020 based on its A and B platforms.
|ARCFOX-7||Beijing Electric Vehicle unveiled its first supercar-level EV concept car. Based on the Formula-e exclusive platform, its chassis and body are made from carbon fiber-reinforced polymer, and has full-time 4WD. It features a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 66.6 kWh, and boasts a maximum output of 450 kW and a maximum torque of 1050 Nm.|
|ARCFOX-1||A concept car based on Beijing Electric Vehicle’s third-generation EV platform. The vehicle has a white-based color scheme with blue lines to represent the future of technology. It weighs 890 kg, and produces a maximum output of 40 kW, and a maximum torque of 120 Nm. It has a length of 3027 mm, width of 1,680 mm, height of 1,446 mm, and a 1,870 mm wheelbase. The range is 200 km.|
|EU260||The EU260 is a compact sedan EV, first unveiled at the November 2015 Guangzhou Motor Show. It has a rated output of 50 kW and maximum output of 100 kW, and a rated torque of 130 Nm and maximum torque of 260 Nm. The vehicle is 4582 mm long, 1794 mm wide, 1515 mm tall, and its wheelbase is 2650 mm. The car has a range of 260 km, and prices start from CNY 256,900.|
|EX200||An SUV-type EV that was officially announced at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show. The vehicle is designed based on the EU260, which was released in late 2015, and boasts a rated output of 30 kW and maximum output of 53 kW, and a rated torque of 102 Nm and maximum torque of 180 Nm. The vehicle has a length of 4025 mm, width of 1720 mm, height of 1503 mm, and a wheelbase that is 2500 mm. It has a range of 200 km, and prices start from CNY 208,900.|
|Senova X35||A compact SUV from the Senova series made its world debut. The powertrain is composed of a 1.5 liter engine mated to a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. It has a maximum output of 85 kW, and a maximum torque of 148 Nm. The X35 has a length of 4,300 mm, width of 1,815 mm, height of 1,640 mm, and a 2,570 mm wheelbase. Prices start at CNY 65,800.|
First Automobile Works: Appealing to younger generations with enhanced “Hongqi” models
First Automobile Work’s theme for the 2016 Beijing Motor Show was “new enjoyment of the future” (leading and expanding upon innovation to share happiness and luck in the future), and the automaker revealed six strategic models, including concept models like the Hongqi B-concept, the Hongqi S-concept, the Benteng X4, the Benteng B50, the Senya R7, and the Junpai A70.
Additionally, FAW has announced that starting from 2016 it will release at least one model per year from the Hongqi brand, and have an eight model lineup by 2020. In the future, FAW will strive to increase the Hongqi brand’s position in the premium market.
|Hongqi B-concept||A concept luxury sedan from the Hongqi brand made its world premiere. The vehicle has a length of 4,950 mm, width of 2,076 mm, height of 1,264 mm, and a 2,868 mm wheelbase. The concept features genuine leather seats, sports-type wheels, BOSE speakers, and a surround-view monitor. It is targeted at younger generations as a personal car, as opposed to a professional car.|
|Benteng X4||FAW revealed a concept of a compact SUV scheduled for release in 2016. The vehicle is 4314 mm long, 1,773 mm wide, 1,650 mm tall, and has a 2,600 mm wheelbase.|
|Junpai A70||The Junpai A70 and an EV version were unveiled. The EV model is powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor (featuring a maximum output of 80 kW and a maximum torque of 228 Nm), and has a range of 180 km. The Junpai A70 has a length of 4,610 mm, width of 1,790 mm, and height of 1,480 mm. The vehicles are scheduled for release in 2016 from the FAW New Energy Vehicle Branch.|
|Benteng B30 EV||An EV model based on the Benteng B30 that was released in 2015 made its debut. The B30 EV has a range of 180km, and features a battery with a capacity of 24.8 kWh. It has a length of 4,625 mm, width of 1,790 mm, and height of 1,505 mm.|
Dongfeng Motor Corporation: Showcasing new energy vehicle versions of existing models like the AX7, A60, and Joyear
The Dongfeng Motor Corporation Group has set its sales goals for new energy vehicles at 300 thousand units during China’s 13th Five-Year Plan (2016 to 2020). As part of its strategy, the company displayed SUVs and off-road vehicles, which are experiencing growing sales in China, but also had a display focused on exhibiting environmentally friendly vehicles from Dongfeng Fengshen and Dongfeng Fengxing.
At the same time, Dongfeng Yulon, which used the name LUXGEN rather than its Chinese company name, presented the S3 and S3 EV.
|AX7 PHEV||Dongfeng Fengshen displayed the AX7, which was released in February 2016, and a PHEV version that features various modes including EV mode, hybrid mode, engine-only mode, and regenerative braking mode. Its electric only range is 55 km. It has a length of 4,695 mm, width of 1,850 mm, height of 1,727 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,712 mm.|
|A60 EV||The A60 EV, which is scheduled for release in 2016, made its debut. The vehicle will mainly made available in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Wuhan. The premium edition features a permanent magnet synchronous motor (maximum output of 70 kW and maximum torque of 226 Nm) and a 28 kWh ternary lithium battery. The vehicle has a length of 4,680 mm, width of 1,720 mm, height of 1,515 mm, and a 2,700 mm wheelbase.|
|Joyear S50 EV||Dongfeng Fengxing’s first ever EV, developed based on the Joyear S50. The vehicle features a permanent magnet synchronous motor (maximum output of 90 kW and maximum torque of 280 Nm) and a 36.6 kWh ternary lithium battery, and has a range of 250 km. It has a length of 4,665 mm, width of 1,790 mm, height of 1,526 mm, and a 2,700 mm wheelbase.|
|S3 EV||The S3, which underwent a full model change, and its EV concept car were revealed at the Beijing Motor Show 2016. The EV features a 33 kWh battery pack, produces a maximum output of 150 kW, and is capable of accelerating from 0-100 km in 7.2 seconds. It can be charged to 80% in 40 minutes.|
Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation: Revealing the RX5 connected car from the Roewe brand and the Baojun 310 from the Baojun brand
With the concept of “internet +new energy +intelligence” as a stepping-stone, the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation Group is propelling innovation and striving to produce competitive products.
For new energy vehicles, SAIC has started a car sharing business that will expand to 20 cities nationwide in the future, and plans to construct approximately 50 thousand public charging facilities.
The RX5 connected car was unveiled. It features the “Yun OS,” which was jointly developed over a two year period by Alibaba, the major Chinese e-commerce firm, and the SAIC Group. This model is based on the “Core Motion Strategy” powertrain project, and is available in two versions: the “NetBlue” (general passenger car model) and “NetGreen” (environmentally friendly model). These models are characterized by different front grill designs. The “NetBlue” model is available with either a 1.5 or 2.0 liter turbo engine. The specifics of the powertrain for the “NetGreen” (environmentally friendly model) were not announced.
|e950||A PHEV version of a sedan first unveiled at the 2015 Guangzhou Motor Show. The powertrain is composed of a 1.4 liter turbo engine (maximum output of 112 kW and maximum torque of 235 Nm), and a permanent magnet synchronous motor (maximum output of 32 (ISG) + 60 (TM) kW and maximum torque of (150 (ISG) + 318 (TM) Nm). The battery unit has received the UL2580 safety certification in the United States, and the vehicle has a range of 600 km. The e950 is available from CNY 288 thousand.|
|Baojun310||A compact hatchback model based on a newly developed platform was displayed. The vehicle features a 1.2 liter P-TEC engine that boasts a maximum output of 60.3 kW and a maximum torque of 116 Nm. The vehicle has a length of 4,032 mm, width of 1,680 mm, height of 1,470 mm, and 2,550 mm wheelbase. The Baojun 310 has a fuel mileage of 3.5 liters/100km.|
Changan Automobile: Announcing the flagship CS95 model SUV and the “654 Intelligent Strategy”
Changan Automobile was the center of attention among the many automakers at the motor show. The OEM had a sensational presentation of its long-distance automated driving test process on a large screen, and also displayed the actual vehicles.
In order to respond to the global market, Changan Automobile announced the “654 Intelligent Strategy.” Specifically, Changan Automobile says that it will develop six platform systems and five core technologies, and will realize intelligent automobiles through automated driving in four steps.
|CS 95||Changan Automobile unveiled its flagship SUV that was developed at the Changan UK R&D Center. The research team members were mostly comprised of former BMW, Jaguar, and Ford employees. The vehicle is powered by a 2.0 liter GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) turbo engine.|
|PRETON||Changan revealed the PRETON, which accomplished the world’s longest automated driving test of approximately 2,000km. The PRETON features a forward camera, forward radar, and laser radar.|
Guangzhou Automobile: Introducing technology cultivated through development of its own brands into new energy vehicles
Guangzhou Automobile sold a total of 190 thousand Trumpchi vehicles as of 2015, 4 years since the brand was launched. The GS8, which was unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show, has an elaborate interior that attracted the attention of attendees at the automaker’s booth.
Guangzhou Automobile Group established GAC Motor New Energy Branch at the end of 2015, and has been focusing on R&D, production, and introducing them to the market. Specifically, the manufacturer is planning to release three new energy vehicles in 2016, and is also planning to release seven models in the next five years. Furthermore, they have set their sales goals for new energy vehicles at 200 thousand by 2020.
|Trumpchi GS4 EV||The Trumpchi brand announced their first EV SUV model, which boasts a maximum torque of 250 Nm, and has a range of 240 km at a speed of 60 km/h. The GS4 EV also has a battery warranty of 8 years/120,000 km, and is scheduled for release in 2016 in the Beijing region.|
|Trumpchi GS3 S||The GS3 S is the Trumpchi brand’s PHEV (range extender EV). Its powertrain consists of a 1.5 liter Atkinson engine combined with an electric motor.|
|Trumpchi GS8||A seven-seater premium SUV independently developed by Guangzhou Automobile Group was revealed for the first time. It was designed by a Chinese designer and will attempt to compete with high/mid-class luxury SUVs from foreign joint venture manufacturers. The GS8 features a C-Class platform. It is powered by a six-speed automatic transmission and Trumpchi’s second-generation 320T engine. The release is scheduled for September 2016.|
Great Wall Motor Company: Promoting its branding to attendees with SUVs and the HAVAL brand, and announcing the H7 mid-size SUV
In January 2016, the Great Wall Motor Company opened its first overseas R&D center in Yokohama. At the Beijing Motor Show 2016, the manufacturer showcased the HAVAL brand, and promoted its status as an SUV pioneer. All of the vehicles it exhibited were SUVs, and in addition to there, apparel and accessories were also showcased to promote a lifestyle incorporating the brand.
Great Wall brand new energy vehicles were displayed in the Old Venue, where the new energy vehicles exhibition was held.
|HB-02||Great Wall Motor Company unveiled a mid-size SUV concept car that was designed by a global design team. It appealed to the company’s prowess in the SUV field and its globalization. The HB-02 is a PHV, whereas a gasoline engine powers the HR-02 compact SUV concept car that was also displayed.|
|H7||A HAVAL brand mid-size SUV was officially announced. The H7 features a six-speed DCT (dual clutch transmission) and a 2.0 liter turbo engine that produces a maximum output of 170 kW and a maximum torque of 335 Nm. The vehicle is also outfitted with several safety features, including lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, and cross traffic alert. The H7 is priced between CNY 149,800 and 169,800.|
|C30 EV||The C30 EV is an EV model based on the C30 compact sedan and features E and E+ environmental modes (E+ mode has better fuel economy than E mode). According to a representative from Great Wall Motor Company, the vehicle is scheduled for release in May 2016.|

BYD：The Qin, Tang, Song, and Yuan “Dynasty Series” and “542 Science and Technology”
With the catchphrase “vehicles for the people of China,” BYD had an all-out showcase for their “Dynasty Series,” which has vehicles named after various Chinese dynasties. The Dynasty Series symbolize love and respect for China’s traditional culture. BYD has released the Tang, Song, and Yuan SUV models, and the Qin sedan. In the future, a “Han” sedan and “Ming” SUV will also be added to the lineup.
In addition to their vehicles, BYD also gave a detailed display about their research and development capabilities and advanced “542 science and technology” (100 km/h within 5 seconds, full-time 4WD, 2L/100 km fuel economy).
|Qin EV300||The Qin EV300 is a four-door EV sedan released in March 2016, and features a permanent magnet synchronous motor developed in-house by BYD. It produces a maximum output of 160 kW and a maximum torque of 310 Nm. The vehicle has a length of 4,740 mm, width of 1,770 mm, height of 1490 mm, and a 2,670 mm wheelbase. It has a range of 300 km.|
|Tang||The Tang is a PHV SUV released in 2015. It has a six-speed automatic transmission and is powered by a 2.0 liter turbo engine with two motors that produce a maximum output of 151 kW and a maximum torque of 320 Nm. The front and rear motors each produce a maximum output of 110 kW and a maximum torque of 250 Nm. The vehicle is a full-time 4WD, and the flagship model’s fuel economy is 2 liters/100 km. The vehicle’s dimensions are: length of 4,815 mm, width of 1,855 mm, height of 1720 mm, with a 2,720 mm wheelbase.|
|Song||When first released in 2015, the Song was available only with a gasoline engine. However, at the Beijing Motor Show 2016 PHEV and EV models were showcased. The powertrain for the PHV model is comprised of a six-speed automatic transmission and a 1.5 liter turbo engine that produces a maximum output of 113 kW and a maximum torque of 240 Nm. Its two motors produce a maximum output of 110 kW, and a maximum torque of 200 Nm. The vehicle has a length of 4,565 mm, width of 1,830 mm, height of 1,720 mm, and a 2,660 mm wheelbase. The all-electric driving range is 70 km. Detailed specs for the EV model were unannounced.|
|Yuan||The Yuan is a compact SUV released in April 2016 that targets younger generations. Gasoline engine and PHV versions are available. The gasoline version is available with either a 1.5 liter inline-four engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission, or a 1.5 liter turbo engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain for the PHV is comprised of a six-speed automatic transmission combined with a 1.5 liter engine and two motors. It has a length of 4,360 mm, width of 1,785 mm, height of 1,690 mm, and a 2,535 mm wheelbase.|
|e5 300||The e5 300 is a four-door EV sedan that was released on the same day as the Qin EV300. The vehicle produces a maximum output of 160 kW and a maximum torque of 310 Nm. The vehicle has a length of 4,680 mm, width of 1,765 mm, height of 1,490 mm, and a 2,660 mm wheelbase. It has a range of 305 km.|
Chery Automobile: Group companies display a diverse lineup at their various booths
On April 20th 2016, a Chery Automobile event with the theme “lead the future with infinite vitality” was held before the motor show to show the rejuvenation of the brand and globalization of Chery’s new image. Moreover, the company announced that it will work to strengthen the R&D and product appeal for future models by establishing a facility in Shanghai and organizing its research and development system.
Chery Automobile also announced that they would sell 200 thousand new energy vehicles by 2020 at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show. A joint venture between Chery Automobile and Yaskawa Electric Corporation is scheduled to be established in June 2016.
|Tiggo 7||A version of the TX concept car presented at the 2012 Geneva International Motor Show for volume production was unveiled. The Tiggo 7 is an SUV targeted at younger generations and is a Chery Automobile strategic model. The powertrain is composed of a 1.5 liter turbo engine and six-speed manual transmission or CVT/DCT. It has a length of 4,500 mm, width of 1,837 mm, height of 1,639 mm, and a 2,670 mm wheelbase. The Tiggo 7 is scheduled for release in H2 2016.|
|Tiggo 7 PHEV||The Tiggo 7 PHEV was unveiled alongside the Tiggo 7. The PHEV system was developed in-house, and is composed of 1 motor and 2 clutches. According to the Chery Automobile representative, further details could not be announced at the motor show.|
|Arrizo 5 EV||An EV model based on the Arrizo 5 that features wireless communication function and a GPS-installed telematic system. The details of the interior and specs were still pending at the time of the Motor Show.|
|Arrizo 7 PHEV||An Arrizo 7-based PHV model that features the same PHV system as the Tiggo 7 PHV. The vehicle boasts mileage of 2.2 liters/100 km. According to a Chery Automobile representative, further details could not be announced at the Motor Show.|
Cowin Auto is a subsidiary of Chery Automobile founded in 2014, and manufactures connected cars targeted at younger generations in China. The automaker also focuses on new energy vehicle development, and plans to release PHEVs and EVs in 2018.
|X3||Cowin Auto unveiled the X3, its first connected car. The powertrain is composed of a manual transmission or CVT mated to a 1.6 liter DVVT engine that produces a maximum output of 93 kW and a maximum torque of 160 Nm. The X3 was designed by an Italian designer, and is targeted toward younger generations. The i Car 1.0 featured on the 10.1 inch touch panel provides audio navigation assistance and infotainment. Installing the Cowin icar app enables users to open windows and change air conditioning settings via smartphone. According to the Cowin representative, the release is planned for June 2016.|
Qoros is a joint venture between Chery Automobile and an Israeli investment firm. At the Motor Show, the company primarily displayed concept models and technology planned to be featured in the concept models.
|Qoros 3 Q・LECTRIQ||An EV concept car based on the Qoros 3 Sedan was unveiled. The vehicle produces a maximum output of 160 kW and a maximum torque of 360 Nm, and has a battery capacity of 57 kWh. The vehicle has a length of 4,590 mm, width of 1,850 mm, height of 1,498 mm, and a 2,700 mm wheelbase. The driving range is 350 km. A mass-production model is scheduled to be announced in 2017.|

Geely Automobile: Promoting globalization in the first year of a new branding strategy, announcing an EV model from the Emgrand brand
At the 2016 Beijing Motor Show, the Geely Automobile Group announced that 2016 will be the first year of “a new branding strategy.” Specifically, the company plans to develop a common platform for research and development. Design centers have been established in Shanghai, Barcelona, California, and Gothenburg. Top-grade equipment and technologies have been installed for production and manufacturing, and a state-of-the-art global production and quality control system adopted to secure the Geely brand.
|Emgrand EV||An EV model of the Emgrand, for which sales reservations started from March 2016 in the Beijing region, was displayed at the Motor Show. It is targeted at younger generations. The Emgrand EV produces a maximum output of 95 kW and a maximum torque of 240 Nm. It has a length of 4,631 mm, width of 1,789 mm, height of 1,495 mm, and a 2,650 mm wheelbase. The vehicle’s battery has a capacity of 45.3 kWh, and can be fully charged in 14 hours. According to a Geely representative, the company has collaborated with Tellus Power, a company located in San Jose, California, for their charging equipment.|
|Emgrand GS||Introduced as an urban SUV targeted at young consumers born after 1985. The powertrain is comprised of a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed DCT and a 1.3 turbo or 1.8 liter engine. The GS has a length of 4,440 mm, width of 1,833mm, height of 1,560 mm, and a 2,700 mm wheelbase.|
JAC Motors: Showcasing two EV models
JAC Motors showcased environmentally friendly vehicles at the New and Old Venues of the China International Exhibition Center. The iEV6 S, JAC’s first SUV model, is a strategic vehicle that has been developed for over 9 years and acquired thirteen patents.
|iEV6 S||Sales reservations for the EV version of JAC’s first SUV model have begun. The vehicle features a permanent magnet synchronous motor and an 18650 ternary lithium-ion battery from Samsung. The iEV6 S produces a maximum output of 85 kW and a maximum torque of 270 Nm. It has a length of 4,135 mm, width of 1,750 mm, height of 1,560 mm, and a 2,490 mm wheelbase. It has a driving range of 215 km. Prices start from CNY 109,800.|

Hawtai Motor: Unveiling the xEV260, its first SUV type EV
In 2016, the Hawtai Motor announced its policy of “value marketing and strategic projects,” and it has been working to increase service quality for repairs and other such aftermarket sectors. Hawtai Motor Group handles many models including gasoline engine vehicles that are priced from CNY 50 thousand to 100 thousand, and the manufacturer will continue to release products with reasonable prices.
|iEV230||The iEV230, Hawtai Motor Group’s first EV, was released in March 2016. It features a permanent magnet synchronous motor and a ternary lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 39.2kWh. The vehicle produces a maximum output of 80 kW and a maximum torque of 220 Nm. It has a length of 4,777 mm, width of 1,794mm, height of 1,481 mm, and a 2,678 mm wheelbase. It has a range of 230 km.|
|xEV260||The xEV260 is a SUV-type EV that made its debut at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show. The vehicle features a permanent magnet synchronous motor and a ternary lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 49.9 kWh. It produces a maximum output of 80 kW and a maximum torque of 220 Nm. HuaChen Group Auto Holding is an OEM that produces in-house brand models from Brilliance China Automotive, a joint venture with BMW. In 2015, the company signed an agreement with Bosch for onboard terminals and engine control of new energy vehicles. Also, the company will collaborate with Hewlett-Packard for automobile cloud services.

The H230 EV features a German 340V permanent magnet synchronous motor, and has a ternary lithium battery capable of withstanding outside temperatures ranging from -30 to 45 degrees (the comfort edition has a battery to accommodate the northern region of China, and the deluxe edition has a battery to accommodate the southern region of China).
