Beijing Motor Show (Part 2) Japanese and Korean OEMs: Models Targeted at the Young Generation
Honda showcases its Acura brand CDX SUV, Mazda displays its CX-4 compact SUV
Continuing on from the previous installment, which covered European and American Manufacturers, this report will look at the environmentally friendly vehicles and world premiere models from Japanese and Korean automobile manufacturers at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show.
Similar to European and American manufacturers, Japanese manufacturers also value the Chinese market. However, at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show, the companies displayed few China exclusive models modified from pre-existing ones. Rather, automakers showed a number of new concepts and models that were developed from scratch to target the younger demographic in the Chinese market. Moreover, the exhibitions featured each companies unique technology along with their vehicle displays.
Specifically, Honda displayed models centering on SUVs like the Avancier, a flagship model exclusive to the Chinese Market, as well as the CDX from its Acura brand. Nissan showcased a broad lineup, ranging from entry models to premium vehicles. Mazda unveiled its new CX-4 crossover SUV for the first time. Aside from the Lexus brand IS, which has been slightly modified, Toyota had no world premieres, but the OEM highlighted its advanced technology by showcasing its FCV concept car, and displaying its hybrid system structure.
Meanwhile, although Korean manufacturers were lacking the momentum seen in previous Chinese motor shows, Hyundai revealed Korea’s first eco-car exclusive IONIQ, as well as detailed displays of the technology that underpins it. Also, Kia Motors appealed to younger generations by inviting the Korean pop group BIGBANG to their booth.
Honda: Unveils the Avancier and CDX, Two Hybrid SUV Models Made in China
In 2015, Honda sold 1 million vehicles in China. At the 2016 Beijing Motor Show, the company put emphasis on its “FUNTEC” technology that realizes advanced environmental friendliness, safety, and comfort, as well as its “Honda SENSING” safe driving support system. Honda’s sales target in 2016 is set at over 1.07 million vehicles, and they are planning to introduce a PHEV by 2020.
In January, Guangqi Honda, one of Honda’s joint ventures, established Guangqi Honda Automobile Sales Co., Ltd. The new company is responsible for sales of Guangqi Honda models, aftermarket services, and the handling of the Acura brand.
|AVANCIER||The SUV announced as the Concept D at the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show has been officially unveiled as the Avancier, the highest class Honda brand SUV model in China. The powertrain is composed of a 2.0 liter turbo engine and nine-speed automatic transmission. Thanks to its 2820 mm wheelbase, the AVANCIER has a spacious interior. The vehicle also features the “Honda SENSING” safe driving support system. It is scheduled for release in the 4th quarter of 2016.|
|Accord Hybrid||The new Accord Hybrid is Honda’s first hybrid model produced in China. Featuring 18-inch wheels, it has an edgy exterior design, and is scheduled for release in the 3rd quarter of 2016.|
|CDX||The premium compact SUV, targeted at younger Chinese demographics, made its world premiere. The CDX is Acura’s first model produced in China. The powertrain is composed of a 1.5 liter turbo engine and an eight-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission), producing a maximum output of 134kW and a maximum torque of 240Nm. The vehicle has a length of 4496 mm, width of 1840 mm, and height of 1615 mm. The CDX is produced at Guangqi Honda’s second plant, and is scheduled for release in late July 2016, with a sales price ranging from RMB 250 thousand to 300 thousand.|
|NSX||The new, next-generation NSX supercar, the heir of the New Sports eXperience spirit of its predecessors, made its debut in China. The Sport-Hybrid SH-AWD adopted by the NSX is composed of a TMU (Twin Motor Unit) motor in the front, with a mid-engine, 3.5 liter twin turbo V6, a new nine-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission), and one motor in the rear. The system produces a maximum output of 573 hp/6500-7000 rpm, a maximum torque of 645 Nm/2000-6000 rpm, and boasts a fuel consumption of 9.6 liters/100 km. The NSX is scheduled for release in the fall of 2016 through limited advanced sales only, with a scheduled price starting at RMB 3 million.|
Nissan: Appealing to Young Generations with the “Young Nissan” Slogan
Dongfeng Nissan, Nissan’s joint venture in China, achieved 1 million vehicle sales in 2015, and is aiming to top that figure with over 1.08 million in 2016. Additionally, Nissan has continued to push their “Young Nissan” slogan since the previous year, and will continue to release models that appeal to younger generations in China.
At the 2016 Beijing Motor Show, Nissan not only showcased the refined stateliness of the Maxima, but also presented a lifestyle-based exhibition with the first ever unveiling of the Venucia T90, as well as the Venucia brand "Cheng Feng" EV that was developed based on the Nissan Leaf.
|IDS Concept||The IDS Concept, an electric vehicle that is also capable of automated driving, was revealed in China for the first time. Thanks to its large 60kW battery, it has a maximum range of 550km, and features advanced technology such as remote parking via smartphones and tablets, and wireless charging.|
|MAXIMA||Sales have begun for the premium sports sedan, which is targeted at younger generations and was first unveiled at the 2015 Guangzhou Motor Show. The Maxima has safety features such as an emergency brake, Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Driver Attention Alert, and an Around View Monitor. Prices for the vehicle start at RMB 234.8 thousand.|
|Venucia T90||The Venucia T90 is a new SUV developed based on the VOW concept car unveiled at the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show. The vehicle features an exclusive platform, and has the roomy interior unique to SUVs with the comfort of a sedan. The T90 is designed to have a low center of gravity, and is powered by a 2.0 liter engine with a maximum output of 102kW. The vehicle is targeted at young consumers who wish to be unique and scheduled to be released in the second half of 2016.|
|QX Sport Inspiration||Infiniti unveiled a mid-size premium SUV concept car, designed to convey an image of power and elegance. The design, layout, and technology of this concept car are reported to be the base for the future Infiniti QX. Moreover, the vehicle was designed through the collaboration of design centers in London, Beijing, San Diego, and Atsugi.|
Toyota: Advancing Chinese Localization, Accelerating Towards Introduction of a PHV Made in China
In the fall of 2015, Toyota released the Corolla and Levin HEVs, which featured hybrid units made in China. As of the 2016 Beijing Motor Show 2016, the vehicles have sold a total of approximately 40 thousand units. On April 24th, the day before the motor show, Toyota also announced that PHEV models of the Corolla and Levin, both developed and produced in China, will be introduced into the Chinese market in 2018.
In addition, the automaker is also planning to release vehicles in China featuring a 1.2 liter direct-injection turbo engine that is already available in Japan and Europe, as well as vehicles sporting the “Toyota Safety Sense” collision avoidance assistance package.
|Corolla Hybrid||The Corolla Hybrid, which debuted at the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show and was released in October of the same year, was also displayed at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show 2016. The powertrain is composed of a 1.8 liter inline-four VVT-I Atkinson cycle engine and a motor. The length is 4630 mm, the width 1775 mm, and the height 1485 mm. A PHEV model will also be released in 2018, and will be produced by FAW Toyota.|
|Levin Hybrid||The Levin Hybrid, which also debuted at the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show and was released in October of the same year, was displayed at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show. The powertrain and dimensions are the same as the Corolla Hybrid, and it will also include a PHEV model in 2018. The vehicle is produced by GAC Toyota.|
|LC500h||A hybrid version of the new LC500 luxury coupe made its Asian debut. The car features a multi-stage hybrid system, composed of a 3.5 liter V6 engine and drive motor, mated to an automatic transmission.|
|IS||This new sports sedan, which underwent a minor change, made its world premiere. The vehicle features a more aggressive exterior design to target young consumers and is an important model in the automaker’s strategy to increase users.|
Mazda: Appealing to Young Generations with the World Premiere of the CX-4
According to Mazda’s March 2016 financial results, the company has sold 235 thousand units in China, a 10% increase from the previous year, due in part to a reduction in excise tax for vehicles with an engine displacement of less than 1.6 liters such as the Mazda3, which has had strong sales, and the introduction of the updated CX-5.
At the 2016 Beijing Motor Show, the world premiere of the CX-4 drew many young attendees to the OEM’s booth.
|CX-4||This new crossover SUV made its world debut. It features SKYACTIV technology and fully utilizes the “Kodo” design language. The model is aimed at global markets, and is first introduced in China, where there is high demand for SUVs. The main target is young, active, generations born after the year 1985 or in the 90s. The model is available with either a 2.0 liter engine that offers a choice of manual or automatic transmissions, as well as a 2.5 liter automatic. The length is 4633 mm, the width 1840 mm, and the height 1535mm (5MT) or 1535mm (6AT). The CX-4 is scheduled to be released in June 2016 by FAW Mazda.|
Hyundai Group: Appealing to Environmental Friendliness
In 2014, the Hyundai Motor Company announced its environment-friendly vehicle development strategy. The company is aiming to come in 2nd after Toyota in the global market for environmentally friendly vehicles. Specifically, by 2020, the company will feature twenty two environmentally friendly vehicles (twelve hybrid models, six PHEV models, two EV models, and two FCV models) in its lineup.
Hyundai Motor Company
|IONIQ Hybrid||Following the Sonata Hybrid announced at the 2015 Guangzhou Motor Show, the manufacturer unveiled Korea’s first model available exclusively as an environmentally friendly vehicle, the IONIQ Hybrid. It realizes a fuel economy of 22.4 km/liter with the combination of the Kappa 1.6 GDi engine and a motor. The length of the vehicle is 4470 mm, the width 1820 mm, the height 1450 mm, and the wheelbase 2700 mm. The IONIQ Hybrid is scheduled to be imported in China in August, 2016. Furthermore, Hyundai also plans to introduce PHEV and EV models in 2016.|
|niro||Kia’s first hybrid SUV had its unveiling in China. Its powertrain is made up of a 1.6 liter GDI engine and a motor that produce a maximum output of 141 hp and maximum torque of 264 Nm. The vehicle has a length of 4355 mm, width of 1805 mm, and height of 1545 mm. The niro realizes a fuel consumption of 4.3 liters/100 km, and features the UVO car telematics system, which can be connected to Android Auto (the app must be downloaded). Imports to China are scheduled to begin at the end of October 2016.|
|K5 Hybrid||A new hybrid version of the K5, which is sold by Dongfeng Kia, made its debut. Although the vehicle was on display, Kia representatives responded that detailed specs were not available when asked.|
