Japanese OEMs produce record high 26.4 million vehicles globally in 2013
Increased production overseas lowers Japanese production ratio to 36.5%

Summary
Summary
Global production marks record high
Global production by the 12 Japanese automakers increased by 2.4% year-over-year (y/y) to 26.38 million units in 2013, achieving a record high for the second consecutive year. On the contrary, production in Japan decreased by 3.1% to 9.63 million units from the previous year, when the volume had increased significantly thanks to the eco-car subsidy program. The volume fell short of the 10 million mark again as in 2012.
Increase in ratio of overseas production and decrease in exports
With production expanding in Asia and North America, overseas production hit a record high for four consecutive years, up 5.9% to 16.76 million units. Production is continuously growing particularly in Asia and the ratio accounted for 34.3% of the global production in 2013, coming close to 36.5% in Japan. In contrast, exports from Japan dropped by 2.7% y/y to 4.67 million units due to increasing production shifts from Japan to overseas.
Production volume in January-March 2014
In the January-March quarter of 2014, the eight Japanese passenger car manufacturers produced 6.72 million units worldwide, up 6.3% y/y. Out of the total, production in Japan increased by 11.7% to 2.53 million units as a result of satisfying last-minute demand before the consumption tax hike in April 2014. Meanwhile, overseas production resulted in an increase of 3.3% to 4.19 million units. Nissan, Honda, Mitsubishi Motors, and Daihatsu achieved two-digit growths in their production volumes, whereas only slight increases were observed at Toyota, Suzuki, Mazda, and Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI: the automaker of Subaru).

Production in Japan drops by 3.1% to 9.63 million units in 2013
In 2013, the 12 Japanese automakers produced 9.63 million units in Japan, down 3.1% y/y. The decrease was a response to production expansion under the subsidy program which had been offered from December 2011 to September 2012.
The top four automakers, namely, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and Suzuki, all ended in y/y decrease. Among them, production dropped by more than 15% at Nissan and Honda, both of which shifted production of the Rogue (Nissan) and CR-V (Honda) to North America. On the contrary, Mazda and Subaru increased production by more than 10% y/y thanks to good sales of the Axela and CX-5 (Mazda's new models) and Subaru Forester (FHI). The same level of increase was also achieved by Mitsubishi Motors, which started production of new mini vehicles developed jointly with Nissan.
On a quarterly basis, production increased after October 2013 as a backlash from a sharp drop in the October-December period of 2012 following the subsidy termination. The increase was also caused by last-minute demand before the consumption tax hike in April 2014. Production in Japan increased by 10.7% y/y to 2.5 million units in October-December 2013 and by 11.9% y/y to 2.66 million units in January to March 2014. Honda increased production in Japan by 53.2% y/y to 277,000 units in the first quarter of 2014 due to a particularly small production in the same period a year earlier as well as good sales of mini vehicles.

Overseas production hits record high of 16.76 million units in 2013
Overseas production by Japanese automakers (Japanese brand vehicles) increased by 5.9% y/y to 16.76 million units in 2013, marking a record high for the third consecutive year. In particular, a record high production of 4.54 million units, a year-over-year increase of 6.7%, was achieved in North America thanks to strong sales and increasing local production.
Production is expanding also in Asia and the volume increased by 6.5% y/y to 9.06 million units in 2013. Production in this area doubled in the six years from 4.52 million units in 2007, before the financial crisis began. In the meantime, the difference between production in Japan and Asia was reduced from more than 7 million units to 570,000 units in 2013.
By region, Japanese OEMs' production in Japan accounted for 51.1% in 2006, but the ratio fell to 36.5% in 2013 with an increase in overseas production, particularly in Asia. The ratio of production in Asia grew from 18.4% in 2006 to 34.3% in 2013, only 2 percentage points away from reaching the level in Japan. The ratio of production in North America dropped from 17.8% in 2006 to 14.1% in 2011, but later recovered to almost the same level (17.2%) in 2013.

Note 1. | Mexico is included in Central and South America. Turkey is included in Europe. |
2. | Until 2006,production volumes of Japanese brand vehicles up to 2006 are tabulated on a basis of export volume of parts for overseas production in principle. Since 2007, the data has been based on the number of vehicles which rolled off production lines at overseas local plants (own-brand vehicles which rolled off from production lines at their plants, joint venture, or other plants in which Japanese OEMs have a stake in). The data do not include either vehicles supplied from other companies under OEM contracts or complete knockdown (CKD)/semi-knockdown (SKD) assembled vehicles. |

Exports from Japan drops by 2.7% to 4.67 million units in 2013
Exports from Japan decreased by 2.7% y/y to 4.67 million units in 2013. The volume is lower by about 2 million units compaired with a peak of 6.73 million units in 2008.
Exports to North America recovered significantly in 2012 thanks to strong sales, but increased only slightly to 1.89 million units in 2013. This is because Nissan and Honda shifted production of vehicles for the North American market to local plants. By contrast, exports to Europe decreased by 16.4% y/y, another two-digit decline, to 710,000 units in 2013. Exports to Asia also dropped by 5.7% to 540,000 units.
By automaker, FHI hit a record high for two consecutive years with exports of 471,000 units, up 24.2% y/y. Mazda also increased its exports by 17.2% to 788,000 units. Except for FHI, Mazda, and Mitsubishi Fuso, exports declined at all other automakers. Honda showed a particularly sharp drop of 41.5% y/y to 125,000 units, which is less than 20% of the 2007 level. The decrease reflects Honda's initiatives to increase local production instead of exports from Japan.
In January-March 2014, exports dropped by 3.8% y/y to 1.08 million units. While exports declined to almost all regions, those to EU increased by 30.3% y/y thanks to recovering sales. Honda again marked a substantial decline of 78.0% y/y to 7,929 units.

Sources: Preliminary reports by the OEMs' public relations | |
Note 1. | Japanese production is based on vehicles which rolled off the manufacturers' production lines, including complete vehicles and CKDs. Overseas production, in principle, is the volume of the manufacturers' own-brand vehicles which rolled off their production lines (except CKD volume). |
2. | The figures for Daihatsu are released from Toyota. They do not include Malaysian Perodua brand vehicles. |
3. | Toyota's production data by region are round figures, so the regional total and the overseas production volume disagree. |
4. | Nissan's production in China includes passenger cars and small commercial vehicles under the Dongfeng brand. The data for April 2013 and onward, however, excludes multi-purpose vehicles made by Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor. |
5. | Suzuki's production by region includes vehicles which the company supplies to other manufacturers on an OEM basis. The data are round figures, so the regional total and overseas production volume disagree. |
6. | Mitsubishi's overseas production excludes vehicles under a local brand in China from April 2012 . |
