Summary

At the Japan Mobility Show 2025 (organizer: Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), period: Wednesday, October 29th, 2025 - Sunday, November 9th, 2025, venue: Tokyo Big Sight), vehicles from various automobile companies were exhibited, allowing visitors to compare the on-board placement of ADAS sensors from each company side-by-side. This report introduces the types and placement of forward-facing cameras and radars used by various automakers. In addition, AD/ADAS-related technologies and products from component suppliers will be presented.

Forward sensors for AD/ADAS (Autonomous Driving / Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) typically use a combination of two devices: a camera that recognizes the lane markings that define the driving lane, classifies the preceding vehicle, and recognizes obstacles from image information, and a radar that measures the distance between the preceding vehicle and obstacles and the vehicle itself.

There are two types of cameras: monocular cameras that perform simple image recognition, and stereo (multiple lens) cameras that can simultaneously measure the distance to the recognized object along with image recognition. In some cases, distance measurement is performed with a monocular camera using, for example, a Mobileye SoC (System-on-a-Chip) with high-performance image processing technology.

With expectations of greater adoption of Level 2+ systems and Level 3 systems supporting high vehicle speeds, it will be interesting to see how different automakers handle cameras and radars depending on their design philosophies and major markets.
