Engine downsizing trends in the U.S. market

4-cylinder engines installed on 67% of passenger cars and 6-cylinder engines on half of light trucks

Summary

 The following is an outline of engine configurations in terms of the number of cylinders and displacements of engines on passenger cars and light trucks sold in the United States by major auto manufacturers.

 The first part of the report deals with "the vehicles produced in North America (US, Mexico, and Canada) for the US market" and the latter part covers "all vehicles sold in the US including the imports".

Engine configurations for vehicles manufactured and sold in the U.S. (MY1997-2012)

Vehicles
manufactured in North America
Total number of vehicles made in North America In MY (Model Year) 2012, 39.6% of the vehicles manufactured in North America were fitted with 4-cylinder engines, and 39.5%, 6-cylinder engines. The percentages ten years ago were 25% for 4-cylinder engines and 45% for 6-cylinder engines. However, the rate of each has not differed much since MY2009.
* The rate of vehicles with 4-cylinder engines is growing for both passenger cars and light trucks.
* The increased number of light trucks with 6-cylinder engines contributed to the slight recovery of vehicles with this type of engine from MY2009.
* The percentage of vehicles with 8-cylinder engines has gone down to 17.4% due to a decline in light trucks with this engine.
Passenger cars Passenger cars * Approximately 50% of passenger cars were installed with 4-cylinder engines and approximately 40% had 6-cylinder engines. This trend continued for ten years until MY2007.
* The number of passenger cars with 4-cylinder engine configurations grew and that with 6-cylinder engine configurations dropped after MY2008.
* In MY2012, the percentage of cars with a 4-cylinder engine was 66.8% and 22.9% with a 6 -cylinder engine.
* The change in this trend was caused by an increase of 4-cylinder models built by the Detroit Three.
Light trucks Light trucks * Until MY2009, both 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder engines were installed on more than 40% of light trucks, respectively, for covering most of the light trucks sold in the U.S.
* After MY2010, the percentage of vehicles with 4- and 6-cylinder engines grew and that of vehicles with 8-cylinder engines declined. By MY2012, the percentage of vehicles with 6-cylinder engines went up to 53.2%. By contrast, the ratio of 8-cylinder engines dropped down to 29%, rapidly nearing that of 4-cylinder engines (17.3%).
* This trend was caused by downsizing of engines installed on vehicles from three U.S OEMs.

Engine configurations of vehicles manufactured in the U.S. for MY2009-2012: 67% of passenger cars powered by 4-cylinder engines(1)

 The percentage of 6-cylinder engines among the engines on MY2012 vehicles (manufactured in North America for the US market) rose for three consecutive years, from 34.3% in MY2009 to 38%, as a result of brisk sales of pickups, SUVs, and other light trucks. Meanwhile, vehicles with 4-cylinder engines accounted for 39.6% of MY2012 engines owing to growth in both passenger cars and light trucks, slightly exceeding the percentage of 6-cylinder engines.

 Of the vehicles fitted with 6-cylinder engines, the ratio of 4-liter class engines decreased from 4.5% to 1.1% between MY2009 and MY2012 while that of 3-liter class engines grew from 28.6% to 37.2% during the same period, reflecting the downsizing trend of the market.

 As for engine configurations on passenger cars, 4-cylinder engines accounted for 66.8% in MY2012. Among them, the percentage of engines with under 2-liter class displacement decreased 2.9% points to 18.2% y/y, while the percentage of 2-liter class engines increased from 42.8% to 48.6% y/y. This trend was caused by increased sales of mid-size sedans with 4-cylinder 2-liter class engines by the Detroit Three: the Chevrolet Malibu, the Ford Focus, and the Chrysler 200.

 As for engines on light trucks, the rate of 8-cylinder engines, which accounted for 40.1% in MY2009, fell to 29.0% in MY2012, and the percentage of 6-cylinder engines rose to 53.2%. Focusing on the displacement of engines on light trucks, the percentage of 2-liter class engines increased from 15.3% to 17.3% and that of 3-liter engines rose from 35.6% to 49.4%. By contrast, the percentage of 4-liter class engines declined from 18.2% to 6.3% and 5-liter class from 30.9% to 27.1% in the same time span.

 The percentage of the turbocharged engines on vehicles produced in North America, doubled from 5.3% in MY2009 to 11.3% in MY2012, but the rate of hybrid vehicles (HVs) remained low at about 1%.

 The percentage of flex-fuel engines (up to 85% ethanol) on vehicles manufactured in North America increased to 14.0% in MY2011, but dropped to 10.6% in MY2012. The same configuration increased to 18.5% in MY2012 for light trucks, but the percentage plummeted for passenger cars from 8% to 1% in MY2011.

 The downsizing trend becomes apparent when comparing the engine configurations of the North American made vehicles by the three U.S. OEMs. In contrast to the large drop from 35.8% to 25.9% for vehicles with 8-cylinder engine configurations between MY2011 and MY2012, the ratio of 6-cylinder engines increased from 40.8% to 43.1%, and 4-cylinder engines from 22.9% to 30.4%.

 The percentage of 4-cylinder engines under a 2-liter class displacement on passenger cars rose sharply to 19% from a mere 0.7% in MY2010. This reflects Chrysler's launch of the Fiat 500 powered by a 4-cylinder 1.6-liter engine, Ford's launch of the Fiesta with a 4-cylinder 1.6-liter engine, and GM's launch of the Chevrolet Cruze/Sonic with a 4-cylinder 1.4-liter turbo engine or a 4-cylinder 1.8-liter engine in and after MY2011.

Engine configurations of vehicles sold in the U.S. (locally-manufactured and imported vehicles combined) for MY2009-2011

 The engine configuration percentages of North American manufactured and imported vehicles combined for MY2011 are as follows: the ratio of vehicles with 4-cylinder engines was 40.7% (vehicles manufactured in North America: 35.5%), 6-cylinder engines 36.7% (38.5%), and 8-cylinder engines 20% (23%). Because imported vehicles are mostly powered by engines with a small number of cylinders (4-cylinder engines accounted for 63.2% in MY2011), overall vehicles, including the imports, sold in the U.S. are leaning towards engines with a smaller number of cylinders. They also showed a downsizing trend, as with North American manufactured vehicles.

 The percentage of HVs among the vehicles sold in the U.S. was 2% in MY2011, exceeding the percentage among North American made vehicles (0.6%). The percentage of HVs among the imports was 7% (13.8% of the imports by Japanese manufacturers) for MY2011.
