On July 23, U.S. President Trump announced that the U.S. and Japan had reached an agreement on tariff negotiations and that reciprocal tariffs on Japan would be 15%, down from the original 25% proposed by the Trump administration. The additional 25% tariff on automobiles and auto parts will be reduced by half to 12.5%, resulting in a combined tariff of 15% when combined with the existing 2.5% tariff. While tariffs on automobile imports from Japan will be reduced to 15%, tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada that do not meet the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement) rules of origin will remain at 25%, and the American Automotive Policy Council (AAPC), made up of the Big-3 Detroit automakers, has expressed concern. The American United Auto Workers (UAW) union has also issued a statement opposing the contents of the agreement. Additionally, the United States has announced that it will impose reciprocal tariffs of 35% on Canadian products, 30% on products imported from Mexico and the EU, and 25% on products imported from South Korea, and negotiations with each country remain unpredictable.
