Beijing Motor Show 2012 (3): Changan Automobile, BAIC, GAC, and Fujian Motor

Changan's first midsize high-end sedan and SUV; BAIC's new models based on Saab's platform

Summary

 This is the third report on the Beijing Motor Show 2012 (2012 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition: Auto China 2012), held from April 25 to May 2, 2012 (press days are April 23 and 24). In this report, we summarize the exhibition of 26 new models (including seven new energy vehicles) by four Chinese state-run OEMs - Changan Automobile (Changan Automobile Group), BAIC Group (Beijing Motor Group), GAC Group (Guangzhou Automobile Group), and Fujian Motor (Fujian Motor Industry Group).


 Changan Automobile Group exhibited nine new models (including two new energy vehicles) including its first midsize high-end sedan, the Raeton, and the Changan CS35 SUV and the New Minyi (second-generation Minyi of its subsidiary, Hafei Motor).

 BAIC Group exhibited ten new models (including two new energy vehicles) including the C70GB, which is an EV sedan that it produces on a trial basis in 2012, and the C70G, which is the first model that adopts the M-trix platform that is based on the technology of the Saab 9-5/9-3. We also report products that were exhibited at the technology booth - the independently-developed M-trix new platform that is based on Saab, and "B-RE" range extender.

 GAC Group exhibited five models (including three new energy vehicles) including a new EV concept car and a first SUV under Trumpchi brand, the Trumpchi GS5, in the Trumpchi series and GAC Gonow Automobile's new off-road SUV, Gonow GX5.

 Fujian Motor exhibited two models including an A-class sedan that uses the platform of the Mitsubishi Lancer EX and a hatchback concept car of this model.


 We will report the exhibition of new models by foreign passenger car manufacturers including Japanese, US, European, and Korean makers in June 2012.

 The Changan E30 taxi is a taxi model of the Saibao E30, which is designed for China. 4434/1708/1471 with a wheelbase of 2600mm. The maximum speed is 125km/h. The cruising range is up to 207km (at a constant speed of 60km/h). The electric efficiency (announced by Changan Automobile) is 16kWh/100km. The model is currently being tested as a taxi that the government procures. It is scheduled to be launched as "Changan E30" in China in the second half of 2012 (announced by Changan Automobile Group. The selling price without the government's subsidy is about 300,000 RMB).
 The model comes with a permanent magnet brushless motor (maximum output: 85kW/maximum torque: 280Nm) and a lithium iron phosphate battery (battery life: more than 1500 times (20%-80% SOC (State of Charge)), capacity: 29kWh). It is equipped with ABS+EBD, four air bags, and a long-distance monitor control system.
Hafei Motor Saibao E30
(EV)
 The Saibao E30 is an EV sedan (5-seat) that is jointly developed with Coda based on the Saibao. The model, including airbag and a secondary battery system, is designed to meet the US safety standards. 4480/1708/1471 with a wheelbase of 2600mm. The vehicle curb weight is 1664kg (which is 484kg heavier than 1180kg of the gasoline-powered model). The Harbin plant produces the model. Hafei Motor plans to export more than 5,000 units under the Coda brand to the US in 2012 (selling price: USD40,000).
 The model comes with a lithium iron phosphate battery made in China (voltage: 332.8V/capacity: 98Ah, battery life: 8 years/160,000 km) and an AC induction motor made by US-based UQM (rated output: 45kW/maximum output: 100kW, maximum torque: 300Nm). The maximum speed is 130km/h. The cruising range is up to 200km. The electric efficiency is 15kWh/100km. It takes six to eight hours to fully charge the battery on a standard household power source in the US. It takes 20 minutes to rapid charge to 80%.

Changan Automobile's Changan E30 taxi model: It is a taxi model of the Saibao E30 (right photo) designed for China.
It is scheduled to be launched as "Changan E30" in China in the second half of 2012.
Hafei Motor's Saibao E30: It is an EV sedan (5-seat model based on the Saibao) that is jointly developed with Coda.

Raeton  Debut. The Raeton is Changan Automobile's first midsize high-end sedan (CD-class, mode code: "CD101"), which takes Bio-dynamic into its design. 4900/1850/1500 with a wheelbase of 2810mm. The model mainly competes with BYD G6, Chery's Riich G5, and Geely's Emgrand EC8. Changan Automobile's Beijing plant produces the model. It is scheduled to be launched at the end of 2012 (estimated sales price: 120,000-150,000 RMB).
 The model comes with a 1.8-liter turbo engine (maximum output: 130kW/maximum torque: 240Nm)/2.0-liter VVT engine and a 6-speed AT (with manual mode) made by Aisin AW/6-speed MT. It is equipped with six front airbags, ESC/EPB/ABS+EBD, TSC(Traction Control System), HBB/BAS/DAA/ECD/TPMS, cruise control, GPS car navigation system, and in-vehicle refrigerator. The model meets China's crash safety standards "2012 C-NCAP".
Alsvin V5  The Alsvin V5 is a sporty sedan that is one size larger than the Alsvin V3. The model targets users including self-employed individuals and young white collar workers. 4415 /1710/1475 with a wheelbase of 2515mm. The fuel economy (announced by Changan Automobile) is about 6.0L/100km. The Beijing plant produces the model. It is scheduled to be launched in July-August, 2012 (estimated selling price: 60,000-80,000 RMB).
 The model comes with Changan Automobile's 1.5-liter "H15" DVVT "Blue Core" engine (maximum output: 84kW/maximum torque: 145Nm) and 5-speed MT/4-speed AT (with manual mode). It is equipped with ABS+EBD+BAS and side airbag.
Alsvin V3  The Alsvin V3 is a compact entry-sedan that is developed over three years. 4180/1650/1465 with a wheelbase of 2410mm. The maximum speed is 175km/h. The fuel economy (announced by Changan Automobile) is 5.6L/100km. The Harbin plant produces the model. It is scheduled to be launched in June 2012 (selling price: 50,000-70,000 RMB).
 The model comes with a 1.3-liter aluminum engine (maximum output: 69kW, maximum torque: 121Nm) and 5-speed MT/4-speed AT (Changan Automobile will add a model with AT with manual mode).
Changan CS35  Debut. The Changan CS35 is Changan Automobile's first SUV under Changan brand (a strategic SUV for young users). It is developed by the Torino development center based on a concept car that was announced at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. 4160/1810/1635 (1670) with a wheelbase of 2560mm. The Chongqing plant produces the model. It is scheduled to be launched in August 2012 (selling price: 80,000-100,000 RMB).
 The model comes with Changan Automobile's 1.6-liter DVVT "Blue Core" engine (maximum output: 92kW/maximum torque: 160Nm) and 5-speed MT/4-spped AT (Changan Automobile plans to add a model with 1.5-liter turbo engine (maximum output: 110kW)). It is equipped with four front airbags, ABS+EBD+BAS, a cruise control system (CCS), and back-up radar.
Honor  The Honor is a commercial light van (5/7/8-seat). 4360/1685/1820 (1850) with a wheelbase of 2750mm. The model mainly targets midsize and small cities. It was launched in February 2012 (selling price: 44,900-60,900 RMB). It is reported that the number of units ordered exceeded 100,000 during the first three months after its launch.
 The model comes with a 1.3-liter engine (maximum output: 68kW/maximum torque: 115Nm)/1.5-liter 4G15VVT engine (maximum output: 74kW/maximum torque: 136Nm) engine made by Harbin Dong'an Automotive Engine and 5-speed MT. It is equipped with EPS as standard equipment. The high-end model also features four front airbags and ABS/EBD as standard equipment.
Hafei Motor New Minyi  The New Minyi is a second-generation model (5 to 8-seat) of fully-remodeled strategic minivan - the Minyi. 3735/1510/1890 with a wheelbase of 2370mm. The vehicle curb weight is 985kg. It was launched in May 2012 (selling price: 26,900-31,900 RMB).
 The model meets Euro4 emission standards and comes with 1.0-liter DA465Q (fuel economy: 7.5L/100km)/DA465QA (7.0L/100km)/M10R (5.9L/100km) engine - made by Harbin Dong'an Automotive Engine in the Changan Automobile Group - and a 5-speed MT. A start-stop system is available as optional equipment for a model with DA465QA engine.

 The Beijing C70GB is an EV sedan (B-class model for the public vehicle market) that is based on the Beijing G70G. 4860/1820/1461 with a wheelbase of 2755mm. The vehicle curb weight is 1712kg. The maximum speed is 130km/h. The cruising range is up to 130km. The electric efficiency is 16kWh/100km. Trial production is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2012.
 The model comes with a lithium iron phosphate battery (capacity: 24.84kWh) made by Beijing Pride-Power, which is under the umbrella of BAIC Group, and a permanent magnet synchronous motor (voltage: 345V). It is equipped with GPS car navigation system. It features a wireless Internet communication technology (GPRS - General Packet Radio System).

 The Beijing E150 REEV is a range-extender EV (hatchback) that is developed based on the Beijing E150. 3998/1720/1503 with a wheelbase of 2500mm. The vehicle curb weight is 1420kg; the gross vehicle weight is 1850kg. The model accelerates from 0 to 50km/h in 7 seconds. The maximum speed is 120km/h. The cruising range in NEDC mode is more than 400km (up to 60km in EV mode). The electric efficiency is 16kWh/100km in EV mode. The model is scheduled to be launched in 2013 or later.
 The model comes with B-RE range extender (reported below), a secondary battery (capacity: 13kWh). When the battery level of a drive battery falls below a certain level, the EV mode is automatically shifted to the range extender mode.

 Debut. B-RE is a range extender that is jointly developed by BAIC New-energy Vehicle and BAIC Dayang Science and Technology, and IAT (China) Automobile Technology in the Mitsui group and Liuzhou Wuling Liuji Power.
 The model comes with a 795.2cc 2-cylinder gasoline engine (economy-mode output: 17kW/2750rpm, maximum output: 26kW/4000rpm) for power generation in combination with a power generator (rated output: 23kW, maximum torque: 150Nm).
 The model is for a range-extender EVs (maximum output: 25kW-40kW, A0 to B-class). 440/481/685mm. The minimum consumption of gasoline per 1kWh power generation is 240g.

BAIC Motor Beijing C70G Debut. The Beijing C70G is the first production model (B-class strategic sedan) that uses the M-trix platform based on the Saab 9-5 platform. It is designed by Italy-based Pininfarina. 4860/1820/1641 with a wheelbase of 2750mm. The model mainly competes with the New Buick Excelle, Mazda New Atenza, and SAIC Roewe 750. It is scheduled to be launched in the second half of 2012 (September-December) (selling price: 180,000 RMB or less).
 The model comes with BAIC Motor's 2.0-liter water-cooled direct-injection 4-cylinder turbo engine - "B205R" (maximum output: 150kW/maximum torque: 290Nm) and 5-speed AT (BAIC Motor plans to add a model with 1.8-liter/2.3-liter turbo engine). It is equipped with ESP (Bosch model)/SVA/LED lamp/GPS navigation system, and telematics.
Beijing C90L  The Beijing C90L is a high-end sedan concept car (dubbed C90K), which is close to a production model. The model is jointly developed by the BAIC Group's Shanghai design center (BAIC (Shanghai) Eastone Design Center) and Italy-based Fioravanti. The overall length is 5200mm. BAIC Motor is considering using a chassis that is used in M-Benz E-Class. The model mainly competes with M-Benz S-Class and Audi A8. It is scheduled to be launched as early as 2013 (estimated sales price: 350,000-500,000 RMB).
Beijing C60F  Debut. The Beijing C60F is a midsize sedan concept car that uses the M-trix platform. Its body size is larger than that of the Beijing C50E. BAIC Motor plans to use a 2.0-liter turbo engine. It is scheduled to be launched as early as 2013 (selling price: 80,000-110,000 RMB).
Beijing C50E  Debut. The Beijing C50E is an A-class sedan concept car that uses the M-trix platform. Its body size is smaller than that of the Beijing C60F. BAIC Motor plans to use a 2.0-liter turbo engine. The model mainly competes with models including the Great Wall C50. BAIC Motor plans to build a production capacity of 100,000-150,000 units a year. The model will be launched as early as in 2013.
Beijing C51X  Debut. The Beijing C51X is an SUV concept car (a sister model of the C50E) that uses the M-trix platform. 4398/1794/1645 with a wheelbase of 2650mm. The model is scheduled to be launched as early as in 2013.

Tunland
 The 6th-generation Tunland is Beiqi Foton Motor's first global pickup truck (4WD/twin cab) that is developed based on Toyota Hilux's platform. 5310/1880/1870 with a wheelbase of 3105mm. The fuel economy (announced by Beiqi Foton Motor) is 8.5L/100km. The model was launched in April 2012 (selling price: 137,000-148,800 RMB).
 The model comes with a high-pressure common-rail 2.8-liter diesel engine (US-based Cummins' ISF2.8s4161P-type) with a maximum output of 120kW/maximum torque of 360Nm and Germany-based Getrag's transmission. It employs Ford's chassis technology and US-based Dana's axle. It is equipped with ABS+EBD and two airbags as standard equipment.
BAIC Motor M-trix platform  Debut. The M-trix is a platform for midsize high-end passenger cars, which is independently developed based on the Saab 9-5/9-3 platform. It adopts a lightweight sporty chassis including adoption of forged aluminum components.
 Utilizing Saab's technology, the platform uses four turbo engines (1.5-liter GDI/1.8-liter/2.0-liter/2.3-liter) with a maximum output of 127kW-190kW/maximum torque of 240Nm-350Nm and CVT/6-speed AT/DCT/MT (maximum torque of 250Nm-350Nm) (as of April 2012, CVT/DCT is being developed).
 The platform is equipped with 10 airbags, ABS+EBD+TCS, EBA (Emergency Brake Assist), CBC (Cornering Brake Control), ESP, EDS, HAS, SVA, LDW (Lane Departure Warning system), TPMS, and telematics.

Note: In April 2012, the SAIC Group announced that it would build a lineup of passenger cars that adopt the M-trix platform including A/B/C-class and CUVs/MPVs by 2014.

 The Trumpchi GS5 is a first SUV (midsize high-end SUV based on Alfa Romeo 166) under the Trumpchi brand. The model was unveiled at the Guangzhou Motor Show 2011. 4732/1854/1680 with a wheelbase of 2710mm. It was launched in April 2012 (selling price: 123,800-186,800 RMB). The 2012 sales target is 3,000-5,000 units.
 The model comes with a 1.8-liter turbo engine (maximum output: 130kW/maximum torque: 230Nm)/2.0-liter DVVT naturally-aspirated engine (maximum output: 108kW/maximum torque: 187Nm) and 5-speed MT/5-speed AT with manual mode. It is equipped with ABS/front airbag as standard equipment and ESP/EBD/TCS/HBA/HHC/HDC, side/curtain airbag and TPMS as optional equipment.

 The Aoosed GX5 is an off-road SUV (4WD) that is jointly developed by GAC Group and Gonow Automobile based on the platform of the Gonow Aoosed G5. 4640/1815/1830 with a wheelbase of 2745mm. The maximum speed is 160km/h. The model was launched in May 2012 (selling price: 109,800-159,800 RMB).
 The model comes with a 2.4-liter Mitsubishi 4G69S4N engine (maximum output: 100kW/maximum torque: 196Nm) and Hyundai's 5-speed AT (GAC Gonow plans to add a model with a 2.0-liter engine/MT). It is equipped with an in-vehicle computer information system that integrates an entertainment and car navigation system.

The vehicle curb weight is 1635kg. The maximum speed is 160km/h. The cruising range is up to 600km (up to 80km in EV mode). The overall fuel economy (announced by GAC Passenger Vehicle) is 4.7L/100km. It takes five to six hours to fully charge the battery on a standard household power source. It takes 20 minutes to rapid charge to 80%.

GAC Passenger Vehicle has already won approval for production by the government. The selling price is about 200,000-300,000 RMB.
