Summary
This report provides a summary of countries with the world's major motorcycle production starting with the emerging countries. The coming second report will briefly summarize the motorcycle production of the developed countries.
The global demand for motorcycles grew by 0.3% year-over-year (y/y) to 55.68 million units in 2013, which was influenced by the decreased demands in China, Vietnam, and Thailand. In China, the range of decline shrank compared to 2012, when motorcycle sales were adversely affected by decreased export and sales due to restrictions on purchases in urban areas. The 2013 production fell by 3.1% y/y to 22.89 million units (including three-wheelers). Meanwhile, production is expected to exceed 16 million units for the first time in India, the world's second largest motorcycle-production country, in FY 2013 started in April 2013.
In Indonesia, sales declined significantly in 2012 due to restrictions on loans. Yet, the demand for motorcycles is strong. Sales grew by 9.6% y/y to 7.74 million units in 2013. In Thailand, 2013 sales declined by 5.9% y/y to 2.0 million units, which was influenced by the slumping prices of agricultural products and political turmoil.
Yamaha estimates that the 2014 worldwide demand for motorcycles will increase by 0.9% y/y to 56.19 million units. India overtook China as the largest purchaser of motorcycles in 2012, expecting that the demand will grow by 4.6% to 15 million units. The demand in China and Thailand are expected to continue shrinking by 8.0% y/y to 10.68 million units and by 10.2% y/y to 1.8 million units, respectively.
