BYD Yangwang U8 (Range Extender EV) Teardown Survey

Active suspension and four-wheel independent torque output control

Summary

MarkLines Co., Ltd. (MarkLines) will purchase the Yangwang U8 (base price approx. JPY 23 million), BYD Auto Co. Ltd.’s top-of-the-line model for the large off-road vehicle market as it expands its product lineup, and conduct a vehicle teardown analysis at its newly established MarkLines Benchmark Center to be opened in August 2024 in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture.

This report focuses on the results of an initial survey conducted on the car's unique technologies, active suspension and four-wheel independent torque output control technology.

In addition, MarkLines also plans to separately scan the vehicle and parts, convert them into CAD data, and sell the parts after disassembly.

As its appearance suggests, the U8 is a model aimed at the serious off-road market occupied by Land Rover and Hummer. The torque output is generated by electric motors attached to each wheel, and the engine is used exclusively for power generation (i.e., recharging the battery). The electric motor, active suspension, and stability control can be linked to control each wheel, and is used to improve off-road capability and stability in emergency situations. The center display inside the vehicle is loaded with support functions for off-road challenges, such as mode switching to suit road surface conditions and displaying the vehicle's current status. The photo shows the vehicle's height and other clearances against obstacles in fording mode (while in off-rode mode).
