U.S. auto sales down in April, though SAAR remains strong
On May 1, major OEMs reported lower U.S. new vehicle sales in April as consumer demand continues to soften.
Subdued sales figures for April 2018 were at least partially due to a month of 24 selling days versus 26 selling days in April 2017.
While General Motors announced on April 3 its decision to discontinue providing monthly sales figures and report only quarterly sales going forward, its sales have been estimated to have decreased between 2.5% and 3.0% from April 2017.
Based on compiled and projected information from Autodata, the overall SAAR for April was 17.17 million units, similar to earlier in 2018.
The SAAR was 5.43 million units for passenger cars and 11.73 million units for trucks.
Among OEM-reported sales for April, Ford sales decreased 4.5%, while FCA sales increased 4.5% compared to last year.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mazda sales were down 4.7%, 28.1%, 9.2%, and 4.6%, respectively, although Subaru sales were up 1.5% compared to last April.
Hyundai/Genesis sales decreased 11.1% from last April, while Kia sales decreased 5.2%.
Among German companies, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Volkswagen sales increased 1.0%, 3.8% and 4.5%, respectively, from the same month last year.
Volvo sales rose 17.0%, while Jaguar Land Rover sales increased 0.3% from last April.
