U.S. car sales down 24.6% in December, up 3.4% for full-year 2021U.S. light vehicle sales in December of 1,221,647 units were down 24.6% as compared to the same month in 2020.
Truck and SUV sales fell 23.7% from last December to 965,943 units, while passenger car sales declined 27.6% to 255,704 units.
December 2021 had 27 selling days in 2021, one less than in December 2020.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for December 2021 was 12.72 million units versus 16.49 million units a year ago.
Total 2021 full-year sales of 15,079,182 units were up 3.4% from 2020 year-end totals.
Truck and SUV full-year sales were up 5.3% to 11,654,294 units, while passenger car sales were down 2.6% to 3,424,888 units for 2021.
GM estimated sales in December were down 44.5%, Ford sales were down 17.2%, and Stellantis sales were down 23.1% compared to December 2020.
For all of 2021, GM sales were down 13.1% and Ford sales were down 7.0%, and Stellantis sales were down 2.2% compared to 2020.
Tesla sales were up 75.3% in December to 47,253 units, and up 71.4% for all of 2021 to 352,471 units.
Toyota sales were down 30.8%, Nissan sales were down 21.0%, Honda sales were down 23.0%, and Subaru sales were down 19.5% compared to last December.
For all of 2021, Toyota sales were up 10.4%, Nissan sales were up 8.7%, Honda sales were up 8.9%, and Subaru sales were down 4.6% compared to 2020.
Kia’s December sales decreased 9.8%, while Hyundai sales decreased 18.8% from last December.
For all 2021, Kia’s sales increased 19.7%, while Hyundai sales increased 23.3% from 2020.
Mercedes-Benz sales in December decreased 4.4%, BMW sales decreased 7.9% and Volkswagen sales decreased 26.1% from the same month last year.
For all of 2021, Mercedes-Benz sales increased 2.1%, BMW sales increased 20.8% and Volkswagen sales increased 15.1% from 2020.
Volvo sales decreased 26.0% in December, while Jaguar Land Rover sales decreased 44.0% from last December.
For all of 2021, Volvo sales increased 11.0%, while Jaguar Land Rover sales decreased 5.2% from 2020.
Newcomer Polestar sold 465 units in the U.S. in December, and 2,418 for all of 2021.
Lucid sold 369 units in December and 577 in all of 2021.
Rivian sold 252 units in the U.S. in December and 584 units for all of 2021.
Karma sold 10 units in December and 99 units in all of 2021.

U.S. auto sales fall 16.0% overall in NovemberU.S. new vehicle sales of 1,022,175 units for the month of November represented a 16.0% decrease from November 2020 as production continued off pace at North American plants due to the global semiconductor shortage.
There were 24 selling days in November 2021, one more than the 23 selling days in November 2020.
November’s passenger car sales fell 30.4% to 202,743 units, resulting in a 19.8% market share, while SUV and truck sales decreased 11.5% to 819,432 units, resulting in a 80.2% market share.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for November 2021 was 13.12 million units versus 16.07 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales dropped 34.3% in November, while Stellantis sales fell 8.7%, and Ford sales increased 5.8%, fueled by trucks and SUVs that increased 11.5%.
Tesla sales increased 57.0% to approximately 33,980 units, increasing its market share to 3.3%.
EV startup Rivian recorded 336 deliveries in November, bringing its running total for 2021 to 493 electric pickups.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota sales were down 25.0%, Nissan sales were down 20.9%,
Honda sales were down 17.1%, Mazda sales were down 5.3%, and Subaru sales were down 34.5%.
Hyundai sales were down 12.0%, and Kia sales were down 5.4%.
Among German companies, VW sales were down 1.1%, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 16.8% and BMW sales were down 0.5%.
Jaguar Land Rover sales fell 37.1% from last November, while Volvo sales decreased 33.8%.
Upstarts Polestar sold 311 vehicles, Karma sold 8 units, and Lucid Motors recorded its first monthly sales of 208 electric vehicles.
The best-selling models in November were Ford F-Series, Ram pickups, Chevrolet Silverado, Toyota RAV4, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Honda CR-V, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Camry, Tesla Model Y, and Ford Explorer.
Totals of all top 10 models decreased from November 2020, except for Ford F-Series sales, which were up 14.6%, Jeep Grand Cherokee sales, which were up 40.9%, and Tesla Model Y sales, which were up 49.5% from the same month one year ago.

U.S. auto sales slide 22.5% in OctoberU.S. new vehicle sales of 1,055,344 units for the month of October represented a 22.5% decrease from October 2020 as production dropped at North American plants due to the global shortage of semiconductors.
There were 27 selling days in October 2021, one less than the 28 selling days in October 2020.
October’s passenger car sales fell 35.1% to 205,958 units, resulting in a 19.5% market share, while SUV and truck sales decreased 18.7% to 849,386 units, resulting in a 80.5% market share.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for October 2021 was13.12 million units versus 16.44 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales decreased 48.8% in October, while Stellantis sales fell 17.5%, and Ford sales dropped 4.0%, affected by production cuts and availability of popular models due to the semiconductor shortage.
Tesla sales increased 38.5% to approximately 27,137 units, maintaining a 2.6% market share.
EV startup Rivian recorded 1 delivery in October, similar to the 1 unit it delivered in September.

U.S. auto sales tumble 26.1% in September further affected by chip shortageU.S. new vehicle sales of 1,007,486 units for the month of September represented a 26.1% decrease from September 2020 as production dropped at North American plants due to the global shortage of semiconductors.
There were 25 selling days in September 2021, the same as in September 2020.
September’s passenger car sales fell 33.1% to 213,393 units, resulting in a 21.2% market share, while SUV and truck sales decreased 24.0% to 794,093 units, resulting in a 78.8% market share.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for September 2021 was12.27 million units versus 16.50 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales decreased 53.4% in September, while Stellantis sales fell 26.6%, and Ford sales dropped 17.9%, affected by production cuts and availability of popular models due to the semiconductor shortage.
Tesla sales increased 25.8% to approximately 26,291 units, with an accelerating 2.6% market share.
EV startup Rivian recorded 1 delivery in September.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota sales were down 24.0%, Nissan sales were down 30.7%,
Honda sales were down 24.7%, Mazda sales were down 0.8%, and Subaru sales were down 30.0%.
Hyundai sales were up 4.9%, while Kia sales were down 4.7%.
Among German companies, VW sales were down 16.9%, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 46.3% and BMW sales were down 10.3%.
Jaguar Land Rover sales fell 23.2% from last September, while Volvo sales decreased 9.0%, and upstarts Polestar sold 545 vehicles and Karma sold 9 units.
The best-selling models in September were Ford F-Series, Ram pickups, Chevrolet Silverado, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Explorer, Toyota Camry, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Tacoma, and Honda CR-V.

U.S. auto sales dive 17.2% in August affected by production cuts, availabilityU.S. new vehicle sales of 1,095,521 units for the month of August represented a 17.2% decrease from August 2020 as many North American auto plants were idled due to a shortage of semiconductors.
There were 25 selling days in August 2021, one less than the 26 selling days last August.
August’s passenger car sales fell 17.5% to 255,758 units, resulting in a 23.3% market share, while SUV and truck sales decreased 17.1% to 839,763 units, resulting in a 76.7% market share.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for August 2021 was 13.09 million units versus 15.36 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales decreased 38.6% in August, while Stellantis sales fell 19.5%, and Ford sales dropped 33.2%, all heavily affected by availability of popular models due to the semiconductor shortage.
Tesla sales increased 21.8% to approximately 23,140 units, with a growing 2.1% market share.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota sales were down 1.0%, Nissan sales were down 8.8%,
Honda sales were down 15.6%, Mazda sales were up 4.5%, and Subaru sales were down 14.7%.
Hyundai sales were up 2.4%, while Kia sales were down 5.3%.
Among German companies, VW sales were down 21.6%, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 15.1% and BMW sales were up 12.5%.
Jaguar Land Rover sales fell 29.7% from last August, while Volvo sales increased 3.0%, and upstarts Polestar sold 190 vehicles and Karma sold 8 units.
The best-selling models in August were Ford F-Series, Ram pickup, Chevrolet Silverado, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Toyota Camry, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Highlander, and Honda Civic.

U.S. auto sales climb 4.7% in JulyU.S. new vehicle sales of 1,291,881 units for the month of July represented a 4.7% increase from July 2020.
There were 27 selling days in July 2021, one more than the 26 selling days last July.
July’s passenger car sales rose 3.8% to 307,509 units, resulting in a 23.8% market share, while SUV and truck sales increased 5.0% to 984,372 units, resulting in a 76.2% market share.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for July 2021 was 14.73 million units versus 14.68 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales decreased 3.4% in July, while Stellantis sales fell 9.4%, and Ford sales dropped 32.0%, heavily affected by availability of popular models due to the semiconductor shortage.
Tesla sales increased 65.8% to approximately 26,200 units, with a 2.0% market share.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota sales were up 33.8%, Nissan sales were up 9.5%,
Honda sales were up 8.0%, Mazda sales were up 35.9%, and Subaru sales were down 2.6%.
Hyundai sales were up 25.0% and Kia sales were up 33.6%.
Among German companies, VW sales were up 15.2%, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 7.0% and BMW sales were up 31.6%.
Jaguar Land Rover sales fell 3.5% from last July, while Volvo sales increased 19.4%, and upstarts Polestar sold 90 vehicles and Karma sold 16 units.
The best-selling models in July were Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-Series, Ram, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Camry, Honda CR-V, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Honda Civic, Toyota Highlander, and Toyota Corolla.

U.S. auto sales rise 16.4% in JuneU.S. new vehicle sales of 1,300,930 units for the month of June represented a 16.4% increase from June 2020, when many dealerships were still affected by COVID-19 restrictions.
There were 25 selling days in June 2021, same as the 25 selling days last June.
June’s passenger car sales rose 21.9% to 316,340 units, resulting in a 24.3% market share, while SUV and truck sales increased 14.8% to 984,590 units, resulting in a 75.7% market share.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for June 2021 was 15.35 million units versus 13.23 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales increased 16.5% in June, while Stellantis sales fell 1.0%, and Ford sales dropped 27.4%, heavily affected by availability of popular models due to the semiconductor shortage and passenger car models that had been dropped.
Tesla sales increased 105.1% to approximately 22,869 units, with a 1.8% market share.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota sales were up 40.3%, Nissan sales were up 35.8%,
Honda sales were up 33.4%, Mazda sales were up 28.7%, and Subaru sales were down 20.5%, affected by vehicle availability.
Hyundai sales were up 48.4% and Kia sales were up 43.1%.
Among German companies, VW sales were up 35.1%, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 20.1% and BMW sales were up 41.0%.
Jaguar Land Rover sales fell 2.5% from last June, while Volvo sales increased 18.0%, and upstart Polestar sold 48 vehicles.
The best-selling models in June were Chevrolet Silverado pickups, Ram pickups, and Ford F-Series pickups in third place as assembly was affected semiconductor component shortages.
Those were followed, in order, by the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, Nissan Rogue, Toyota Tacoma, and Toyota Highlander.

May’s passenger car sales rose 49.1% to 392,797 units, resulting in a 24.8% market share, while SUV and truck sales increased 40.0% to 1,194,012 units, resulting in a 75.2% market share.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for May 2021 was 17.09 million units versus 12.08 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales increased 36.5% in May, while Ford sales increased 3.7% and Stellantis sales rose 33.5%.
Tesla sales increased 253.3% to approximately 28,790 units, with a 1.8% market share.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota sales were up 47.5%, Nissan sales were up 68.9%,
Honda sales were up 46.2%, Mazda sales were up 69.2%, and Subaru sales were up 8.8%.
Hyundai sales were up 59.0% and Kia sales were up 75.3%.
Among German companies, VW sales were up 78.2%, Mercedes-Benz sales were up 14.0% and BMW sales were up 105.0%.
Jaguar Land Rover sales increased 40.2% from last May, while Volvo sales increased 39.4%.
The best-selling models in May were Ram pickups, Chevrolet Silverado pickups, and Ford F-Series pickups in third place as production was held up awaiting semiconductor components.
Those were followed, in order, by the Honda CR-V, Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, Nissan Rogue, Toyota Highlander, Toyota RAV4, and Toyota Corolla.

U.S. auto sales increase more than doubles to 110.4% in AprilU.S. new vehicle sales of 1,512,216 units for the month of April represented a 110.4% increase from April 2020, when many dealerships had been forced to close over COVID-19 restrictions.
There were 26 selling days in April 2021, same as the 26 selling days last April.
April’s passenger car sales rose 108.3% to 357,243 units, resulting in a 23.6% market share, while SUV and truck sales increased 111.0% to 1,154,973 units, resulting in a 76.4% market share.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for April 2021 was 18.54 million units versus 8.74 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales increased 73.6% in April, while Ford sales increased 64.8% and Stellantis sales rose 80.5%.
Tesla sales increased 167.7% to approximately 16,600 units, with a 1.1% market share.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota sales were up 179.6%, Nissan sales were up 112.3%,
Honda sales were up 171.0%, Mazda sales were up 184.4%, and Subaru sales were up 100.5%.
Hyundai sales were up 132.4% and Kia sales were up 121.3%.
Among German companies, VW sales were up 111.3%, Mercedes-Benz sales were up 74.8% and BMW sales were up 163.5%.
Jaguar Land Rover sales fell 139.9% from last April, while Volvo sales increased 186.7%.
The top 10 best-selling models in April, in order, were Ford F-Series pickups, Ram pickups, Chevrolet Silverado pickups, Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Camry, Nissan Rogue, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, and Toyota Highlander.

U.S. car sales jump 61.9% in March, up 11.4% for Q1 2021U.S. light vehicle sales in March of 1,605,115 units were up 61.9% as compared to the same month in 2020, which marked the beginning of the COVID-19 shutdowns.
Truck and SUV sales rose 70.2% from last March to 1,232,285 units, while passenger car sales increased 39.5% to 372,830 units.
SAAR in March was 18.00 million units/year.
March had 26 selling days in 2021, one more than in March 2020.
First quarter 2021 sales of 3,908,738 units were up 11.4% from the first quarter of 2020.
Truck and SUV Q1 sales were up 17.1% to 3,013,745 units, while passenger car sales were down 4.4% to 894,993 units for Q1 2020.
GM sales in March were up 44.5%, Ford sales were up 26.2%, and Stellantis sales were up 43.9% compared to March 2020.
For first quarter 2021, GM sales were up 3.7% and Ford sales were up 0.6%, and Stellantis sales were up 5.2% compared to the first quarter of 2020.
Tesla’s estimated March sales were up 72.0% to 23,050 units, and Q1 2021 estimated sales were up 23.3% to 69,300 units.
Toyota sales were up 92.3%, Nissan sales were up 65.3%, Honda sales were up 92.5%, and Subaru sales were up 101.5% compared to last March.
For the first quarter of 2021, Toyota sales were up 22.8%, Nissan sales were up 10.8%, Honda sales were up 16.2%, and Subaru sales were up 21.6% compared to Q1 2020.
Kia’s March sales increased 46.5%, while Hyundai sales increased 117.3% from last March.
For Q1 2021, Kia’s sales increased 15.7%, while Hyundai sales increased 30.1% from Q1 2020.
Mercedes Benz sales in March increased 5.1%, BMW sales increased 82.0% and Volkswagen sales increased 89.2% from the same month last year.
For the first quarter of 2021, Mercedes Benz sales decreased 6.7%, BMW sales increased 20.1% and Volkswagen sales increased 21.0% from Q1 2020.
Volvo sales increased 83.0% in March, while Jaguar Land Rover sales increased 136.4% from last March.
For the first quarter of 2021, Volvo sales increased 40.4%, and Jaguar Land Rover sales increased 9.9% from Q1 2020.

U.S. auto sales dive 12.7% in FebruaryU.S. new vehicle sales of 1,196,008 units for the month of February represented a 12.7% decrease from February 2020.
In a month that saw harsh winter storms across the U.S. and production shutdowns at auto plants due to semiconductors, there were 24 selling days in February, two less than the 26 days in the same month in 2020.
February’s passenger car sales fell 26.6% to 268,010 units, resulting in a 22.4% market share, while SUV and truck sales decreased 7.7% to 927,998 units, resulting in a 77.6% market share.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for February 2021 was 15.88 million units versus 17.02 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales decreased 19.5% in February, while Ford sales decreased 14.6% and Stellantis sales fell 17.4%.
Tesla sales increased 5.4% to approximately 21,550 units, with a 1.8% market share.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota sales were down 5.7%, Nissan sales were down 13.2%,
Honda sales were down 11.4%, Mazda sales were down 8.4%, and Subaru sales were down 6.6%.
Hyundai sales were down 7.1% and Kia sales were down 7.9%.

U.S. auto sales slide 3.3% in JanuaryU.S. new vehicle sales of 1,109,578 units for the month of January represented a 3.3% decrease from January 2020.
There were 24 selling days in the month, one less than the 25 days in January 2020.
January’s passenger car sales fell 15.9% to 255,094 units, resulting in a 23.0% market share, while SUV and truck sales increased 1.2% to 854,484 units, resulting in a 77.0% market share.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for January 2021 was 16.83 million units versus 17.05 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales decreased 2.9% in January, while Ford sales decreased 8.6% and Stellantis sales fell 0.7%.
Tesla sales increased 10.5% to approximately 24,700 units, with a 2.2% market share.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota sales were up 0.6%, Nissan sales were down 11.9%,
Honda sales were down 9.2%, Mazda sales were up 6.9%, and Subaru sales were up 0.2%.
Hyundai sales were up 4.7% and Kia sales were up 11.4%.
Among German companies, VW sales were down 3.2%, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 11.4% and BMW sales were down 6.5%.
Jaguar Land Rover sales fell 12.8% from last January, while Volvo sales increased 32.4%.
