UK achieves record 2.69 million registrations in 2016, December sales slip by 1.1%
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on January 5, a new record was set in the UK with 2,692,786 cars registered in 2016, the fifth consecutive year of growth, representing a 2.3% increase from 2015.
December 2016 car sales, however, had decreased 1.1% from the same month last year to 178,022 units.
December sales for Ford decreased 10.8% to 20,741 units (11.7% market share), GM Vauxhall decreased 18.0% to 17,074 units (9.6% share), and Volkswagen increased 8.5% to 15,634 units (8.8% share).
BMW sales in December decreased 12.3% to 15,066 units (8.5% share) and Mercedes-Benz sales increased 14.9% to 10,220 units (5.7% share).
Of the five most popular vehicles in December, 8,198 Ford Fiestas; 6,134 Vauxhall Astras; 5,355 Volkswagen Golfs; 4,991 Ford Focuses; and 4,637 Minis were sold.
Compared to last December, diesel-engine car sales decreased by 6.8% to 83,637 units (47.0% share), gasoline-engine car sales increased 4.3% to 88,116 units (49.5% share), and alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) sales increased 8.0% to 6,269 units (3.5% share).
In December, private car sales decreased 5.5% to 67,640 units (38.0% share), fleet sales decreased 0.8% to 102,125 units (57.4% share), and sales to businesses increased 50.9% to 8,257 units (4.6% share).
Light commercial vehicles (LCV) sales of 27,239 units in December represented a 10.4% decrease from very strong December 2015 sales.
However, full-year LCV sales increased 1% to 375,687 units in 2016, the fourth consecutive year of growth.
Sales of commercial vehicles between 2.5 and 3.5 tons decreased 17.3% this December to 16,902 units, though were up 4.8% to 232,948 units for the full year.
Sales of commercial vehicles larger than 3.5 tons decreased 17.2% to 505 units for December, but decreased only 3.9% to 7,685 units for the full year.

UK new car sales increase 2.9% in November
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on December 5, November 2016 car sales in the UK increased 2.9% from the same month last year to 184,101 units.
Cumulative passenger car sales for the first eleven months of 2016 increased 2.5% to 2,514,764 units compared to the same period in 2015.
November sales for Ford increased 1.6% to 21,944 units (11.9% market share), GM Vauxhall decreased 23.7% to 15,976 units (8.7% share), and Volkswagen increased 10.8% to 14,351 units (7.8% share).
BMW sales in November increased 28.2% to 15,330 units (8.3% share) and Mercedes-Benz sales increased 14.6% to 11,382 units (6.2% share).
Of the five most popular vehicles in November, 8,382 Ford Fiestas; 4,829 Vauxhall Astras; 4,663 Volkswagen Golfs; 4,341 Vauxhall Corsas; and 4,321 Ford Focuses were sold.
Compared to last November, diesel-engine car sales decreased by 2.9% to 88,897 units (48.3% share), gasoline-engine car sales increased 7.9% to 88,541 units (48.1% share), and alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) sales increased 3.6% to 6,663 units (3.6% share).
In November, private car sales decreased 1.2% to 78,067 units (42.4% share), fleet sales increased 5.1% to 99,299 units (53.9% share), and sales to businesses increased 24.3% to 6,735 units (3.7% share).
Sales of all light commercial vehicles (LCV) increased 2.5% to 29,784, reaching a 20-year record for the month of November.
The 348,448 units sold in the first eleven months of 2016 represent a 2.1% increase from the same period one year ago.
Sales of commercial vehicles between 2.5 and 3.5 tons decreased 4.4% this November to 18,316 units, while sales of commercial vehicles larger than 3.5 tons increased 47.7% to 650 units.

UK new car sales increase 1.4% in October
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on November 4, October car sales in the UK increased 1.4% from the same month last year to 180,168 units.
Cumulative passenger car sales for the first ten months of 2016 increased 2.5% to 2,330,663 units compared to the same period in 2015.
October vehicle sales for Ford decreased 3.3% to 21,411 units (11.9% market share), GM Vauxhall decreased 5.9% to 14,949 units (8.3% share), and Volkswagen increased 7.8% to 14,023 units (7.8% share).
BMW sales in October decreased 2.9% to 13,541 units (7.5% share) and Mercedes-Benz sales increased 14.2% to 11,334 units (6.3% share).
Of the five most popular vehicles in October, 7,806 Ford Fiestas; 4,985 Vauxhall Astras; 4,945 Nissan Qashqais; 4,520 Volkswagen Golfs; and 4,281 Audi A3’s were sold.
Compared to last October, diesel-engine car sales decreased by 2.4% to 89,004 units (49.4% share), gasoline-engine car sales increased 4.9% to 85,139 units (47.3% share), and alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) sales increased 3.3% to 6,025 units (3.3% share).
In October, private car sales decreased 1.1% to 77,821 units (43.2% share), fleet sales increased 4.2% to 96,440 units (53.5% share), and sales to businesses decreased 7.8% to 5,907 units (3.3% share).
October sales of all light commercial vehicles (LCVs) fell 4.5% to 26,950, but the 318,664 units sold in the first ten months of 2016 represents a record year-to-date performance.
Sales of commercial vehicles between 2.5 and 3.5 tons decreased 7.1% in October to 16,511 units, while sales of commercial vehicles larger than 3.5 tons increased 17.2% to 688 units.

UK new car sales increase 1.6% in September
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on October 5, September car sales in the UK increased 1.6% from the same month last year to 469,696 units, marking a new sales record for the month of September.
Cumulative passenger car sales for the first nine months of 2016 increased 2.6% to 2,150,495 units compared to the same period in 2015.
September vehicle sales for Ford decreased 10.9% to 49,078 units (10.4% market share), GM Vauxhall decreased 4.9% to 41,697 units (8.9% share), and Volkswagen decreased 14.1% to 33,722 units (7.2% share).
BMW sales in September increased 9.7% to 32,595 units (6.9% share) and Mercedes-Benz sales increased 15.9% to 31,988 units (6.8% share).
Of the five most popular vehicles in September, 19,769 Ford Fiestas; 14,570 Vauxhall Corsas; 11,003 Volkswagen Golfs; 10,992 Ford Focuses; and 10,619 Nissan Qashqais were sold.
Compared to last September, diesel-engine car sales increased by 2.8% to 218,364 units (46.5% share), gasoline-engine car sales decreased 1.1% to 235,272 units (50.1% share), and alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) sales increased 32.6% to 16,060 units (3.4% share).
In September, private car sales decreased 1.7% to 223,844 units (47.7% share), fleet sales increased 7.3% to 222,844 units (47.4% share), and sales to businesses decreased 14.9% to 23,008 units (4.9% share).
Sales of commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tons increased 1.9% in September to 59,857 units, while sales of commercial vehicles larger than 3.5 tons increased 18.2% to 1,149 units.
