Canadian vehicle sales fall 4.1% in December, down 3.6% for full-year 2019
Canadian vehicle sales of 109,584 units in December decreased 4.1% from the 114,289 units sold in the same month in 2018.
Overall vehicle sales for 2019 declined 3.6% to 1,914,357 units.
SUV and pickup sales, at 87,188 units, were up 1.9% in December, while passenger car sales, at 22,396 units, were down 22.0% compared to 2018.
Combined sales for all of 2019 for the Detroit Big 3 were down 5.3% to 767,770 units, while sales of all foreign nameplates combined in 2019 were down 2.3% to 1,146,587 units.
Combined sales in December for the Detroit Big 3 were up 2.2% at 42,741 units, while sales of all foreign nameplates combined were down 7.8% to 66,843 units.
Of the Big Three manufacturers, FCA’s estimated sales climbed 7.8% and General Motors’ estimated sales rose 2.0%, while Ford’s estimated sales fell 1.8% from last December.
Among Japanese automakers, Subaru sales increased 16.8%, while Toyota, Nissan, and Honda sales fell 18.7%, 20.6% and 17.1%, respectively.
Hyundai and Kia sales in December were up 15.5% and 4.4%, respectively.
Among German companies, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 4.2%, BMW brand sales were down 9.5%, VW brand sales were down 8.7%, while Audi sales were up 10.8% compared to last December.
Scotiabank estimates that Canadian auto sales in 2020 will be 1,915,000, remaining at the same level of 2019’s sales volume.

Canadian vehicle sales of 143,666 units in November decreased by only 2 units from the 143,668 units sold in the same month in 2018.
SUV and pickup sales, at 111,892 units, were up 6.9% in November, while passenger car sales, at 31,774 units, were down 18.6% compared to 2018.
Combined sales in November for the Detroit Big 3 were virtually the same as last November at 52,855 units, while sales of all foreign nameplates combined were coincidentally also nearly the same at 90,811 units.
Of the Big Three manufacturers, General Motors’ estimated sales fell 5.2% y/y (a 12.7% market share) and Ford sales fell 1.7% (14.5%), but FCA sales increased 10.8% (9.5%) from last November.
Among Japanese automakers, Toyota and Subaru sales were up 0.1% (11.7%) and 3.4% (3.6%), respectively, while Nissan and Honda sales were down 10.4% (6.5%) and 3.1% (8.1%), respectively.
Hyundai and Kia sales were up 5.1% (7.4%) and 8.6% (4.0%), respectively.
Among German companies, Mercedes-Benz sales were up 9.7% (2.9%), BMW brand sales were down 12.9% (2.2%), VW brand sales were down 5.3% (3.9%), and Audi sales were up 4.4% (2.4%) compared to last November.
Scotiabank estimates that Canadian auto sales in 2019 will reach 1,940,000.

Canadian vehicle sales in October decreased by 0.6% from the same month in 2018, to 160,216 units.
SUV and pickup sales, at 121,512 units, were up 5.0% in October, while passenger car sales, at 38,704 units, were down 14.8% compared to 2018.
Combined sales in October for the Detroit Big 3 were down 1.4% to 58,651 units, while sales of all foreign nameplates combined were down 0.1% to 101,565 units.
Of the Big Three manufacturers, General Motors’ estimated sales fell 7.5% y/y (a 13.5% market share), Ford sales fell 1.1% (13.2%), and FCA sales increased 8.1% (9.9%) from last October.
Among Japanese automakers, Toyota, Nissan, sales were down 2.7% (11.4%), 12.8% (6.2%) while Honda, Mazda and Subaru sales were up 7.8% (9.6%), 0.7% (3.8%) and 2.6% (3.5%), respectively.
Hyundai and Kia sales were up 2.6% (7.3%) and 11.1% (3.9%), respectively.
Among German companies, Mercedes-Benz sales were up 6.4% (2.7%) and Audi sales were up 11.2% (2.1%) whereas VW brand sales were down 1.7% (4.4%) and BMW brand sales were down 4.5% (1.9%), compared to last October.

Canadian vehicle sales fall 3.7% in September
Canadian vehicle sales in September decreased 3.7% from the same month in 2018, to 166,488 units.
SUV and pickup sales, at 126,087 units, were up 1.9% in September, while passenger car sales, at 40,401 units, were down 18.0% compared to 2018.
Combined sales in September for the Detroit Big 3 were down 5.1% to 66,240 units, while sales of all foreign nameplates combined were down 2.8% to 100,248 units.
Of the Big Three manufacturers, General Motors’ estimated sales fell 8.7%, Ford sales fell 4.2%, and FCA sales fell 1.2% from last September.
Among Japanese automakers, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and Subaru sales were down 6.3%, 13.0%, 5.0%, and 15.4%, respectively.
Hyundai and Kia sales were up 2.1% and 15.3%, respectively.
Among German companies, Mercedes-Benz sales were up 4.8%, BMW brand sales were up 1.1%, VW brand sales were down 7.8%, and Audi sales were up 5.3% compared to last September.

Canadian vehicle sales up 0.6% in August
Canadian vehicle sales in August increased 0.6% from the same month in 2018, to 182,040 units.
SUV and pickup sales, at 138,893 units, were up 8.4% in August, while passenger car sales, at 43,147 units, were down 18.3% compared to 2018.
Combined sales in August for the Detroit Big 3 were up 1.9% to 74,474 units, while sales of all foreign nameplates combined were down 0.3% to 107,566 units.
Of the Big Three manufacturers, General Motors’ estimated sales fell 3.4%, Ford sales fell 8.8%, but FCA sales jumped by 27.5% from last August.
Among Japanese automakers, Toyota sales were up 10.4% while Nissan, Honda, and Subaru sales were down 7.6%, 1.4%, and 6.1%, respectively.
Hyundai and Kia sales were up 1.1% and 3.0%, respectively.
Among German companies, Mercedes-Benz sales were up 18.4%, BMW brand sales were down 8.1%, VW brand sales were down 2.4%, and Audi sales were up 2.1% compared to last August.

Canadian vehicle sales slide 1.0% in July
Canadian vehicle sales in July decreased 1.0% from the same month in 2018, to 173,533 units.
SUV and pickup sales, at 129,411 units, were up 5.8% in July, while passenger car sales, at 44,122 units, were down 16.8% compared to 2018.
Combined sales in July for the Detroit Big 3 were up 0.7% to 69,234 units, while sales of all foreign nameplates combined were down 2.1% to 104,299 units.
Of the Big Three manufacturers, General Motors’ estimated sales fell 0.1%, Ford sales fell 8.8%, but FCA sales jumped 18.9% from last July.
Among Japanese automakers, Toyota sales were up 17.2% and Subaru sales were up 2.3%, while Nissan sales were down 11.9% and Honda sales were down 3.9%.
Hyundai and Kia sales were down 3.8% and 1.2%, respectively.
Among German companies, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 3.4%, BMW brand sales were up 0.4%, VW brand sales were down 17.0%, and Audi sales were down 4.6% compared to last July.

Canadian vehicle sales in June decreased 7.2% from the same month in 2018, to 185,741 units.
SUV and pickup sales, at 137,625 units, were down 1.0% in June, while passenger car sales, at 48,116 units, were down 21.3% compared to 2018.
Combined sales in June for the Detroit Big 3 were down 4.5% to 77,640 units, while sales of all foreign nameplates combined were down 9.1% to 108,101 units.
Of the Big Three manufacturers, General Motors’ estimated sales fell 6.8%, Ford sales fell 2.7%, and FCA sales fell 4.1% from last June.
Among Japanese automakers, Toyota sales were down 1.5%, Nissan sales were down 11.7%, Subaru sales were down 0.6%, and Honda sales were down 10.2%.
Hyundai and Kia sales were down 1.4% and 4.1%, respectively.
Among German companies, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 19.1%, BMW brand sales were down 15.6%, VW brand sales were down 18.4%, and Audi sales were down 29.8% compared to last June.

Canadian vehicle sales in April decreased 3.5% from the same month in 2018, to 185,158 units.
SUV and pickup sales, at 136,163 units, were up 1.8% in April, while passenger car sales, at 48,995 units, were down 15.6% compared to 2018.
Combined sales in April for the Detroit Big 3 were down 5.9% to 77,775 units, while sales of all foreign nameplates combined were down 1.7% to 107,383 units.
Of the Big Three manufacturers, General Motors sales fell 4.4%, Ford sales fell 4.3%, and FCA sales dropped 9.8% from last April.
Among Japanese automakers, Toyota sales were up 5.6%, while Nissan, Honda, and Subaru sales were down 7.1%, 5.4%, and 8.6%, respectively.
Hyundai and Kia sales were up 5.6% and 1.9%, respectively.
Among German companies, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 19.6%, BMW brand sales were up 1.0%, VW brand sales were up 11.1%, and Audi sales were down 17.7% compared to last April.

SUV and pickup sales, at 133,317 units, were up 0.6% in March, while passenger car sales, at 48,483 units, were down 10.1% compared to 2018.
Combined sales in March for the Detroit Big 3 were down 8.0% to 74,209 units, while sales of all foreign nameplates combined were up 1.7% to 107,591 units.
Of the Big Three manufacturers, General Motors sales fell 18.4%, Ford sales rose 7.2%, and FCA sales dropped 11.5% from last March.
Among Japanese automakers, Toyota, Nissan, and Subaru sales were down 4.1%, 2.7%, and 1.0%, respectively, while Honda sales were up 12.0%.
Hyundai and Kia sales were up 8.8% and 4.1%, respectively.
Among German companies, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 6.5%, BMW brand sales were up 0.8%, VW brand sales were up 4.8%, and Audi sales were down 17.3% compared to last March.

SUV and pickup sales, at 90,767 units, were up 1.2% in February, while passenger car sales, at 30,124 units, were down 16.0% compared to 2018.
Combined sales in February for the Detroit Big 3 were down 4.1% to 53,061 units, while sales of all foreign nameplates combined were down 3.4% to 67,830 units.
Of the Big Three manufacturers, General Motors sales fell 9.1%, Ford sales fell 1.4%, and FCA sales dropped 2.0% from last February.
Among Japanese automakers, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, and Subaru sales were down 1.0%, 13.7%, 17.1%, and 5.7%, respectively, while Honda sales were up 2.0%.
Hyundai and Kia sales were up 14.6% and 10.5%, respectively.
Among German companies, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 21.9%, BMW brand sales were down 15.5%, VW brand sales were up 0.5%, and Audi sales were down 27.6% compared to last February.

Canadian vehicle sales in January decreased 7.3% from the same month in 2018, to 108,774 units.
SUV and pickup sales, at 81,690 units, were down 4.9% in January, while passenger car sales, at 27,084 units, were down 13.7% compared to 2018.
Combined sales in January for the Detroit Big 3 were down 12.5% to 44,645 units, while sales of all foreign nameplates combined were down 3.2% to 64,129 units.
Of the Big Three manufacturers, General Motors sales fell 14.8%, Ford sales fell 1.9%, and FCA sales dropped 20.1% from last January.
Among Japanese automakers, Toyota sales were up 14.4%, while, Nissan, Honda, and Subaru sales were down 9.0%, 17.7% and 2.4% respectively.
Hyundai and Kia sales were up 22.4% and 9.1%, respectively.
