U.S. car sales up 5.1% in December, down 14.6% for full-year 2020 (Sales figures of Volvo have been updated. January 7, 2021)
U.S. light vehicle sales in December of 1,619,085 units were up 5.1% as compared to the same month in 2019.
Truck and SUV sales rose 10.7% from last December to 1,264,434 units, while passenger car sales declined 10.9% to 354,651 units.
December had 28 selling days in 2020, three more than in December 2019.

Total 2020 full-year sales of 14,577,371 units were down 14.6% from 2019 year-end totals.
Truck and SUV full-year sales were down 9.6% to 11,058,337 units, while passenger car sales were down 27.0% to 3,519,034 units for 2020.
GM estimated sales in December were up 6.4%, Ford sales were down 3.9%, and FCA sales were up 5.9% compared to December 2019.
For all of 2020, GM sales were down 11.9% and Ford sales were down 15.4%, and FCA sales were down 17.4% compared to 2019.
Toyota sales were up 21.2%, Nissan sales were down 5.9%, Honda sales were down 0.1%, and Subaru sales were up 1.9% compared to last December.
For all of 2020, Toyota sales were down 11.4%, Nissan sales were down 33.2%, Honda sales were down 16.3%, and Subaru sales were down 12.6% compared to 2019.
Kia’s December sales increased 4.9%, while Hyundai sales increased 3.6% from last December.

Mercedes-Benz sales in December decreased 4.6%, BMW sales increased 1.3% and Volkswagen sales increased 35.2% from the same month last year.

Volvo sales increased 15.2% in December, while Jaguar Land Rover sales decreased 9.2% from last December.

U.S. auto sales dive 14.0% in NovemberU.S. new vehicle sales of 1,214,891 units for the month of November represented a 14.0% decrease from November 2019, amid a growing COVID-19 crisis and presidential election.
There were 23 selling days in the month, three less than the 26 days in November 2019.
November’s passenger car sales fell 20.9% to 290,608 units, resulting in a 23.9% market share, while SUV and truck sales decreased 11.5% to 924,283 units, resulting in a 76.1% market share.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for November 2020 was 15.88 million units versus 17.18 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales decreased 13.3% in November, while Ford sales decreased 21.1% and FCA sales fell 20.9%.
Tesla sales increased 31.6% to approximately 21,650 units, with a 1.8% market share.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota sales were down 1.1%, Nissan sales were down 21.7%,
Honda sales were down 23.4%, Mazda sales were down 10.8%, and Subaru sales were down 11.4%.
Hyundai sales were down 10.6% and Kia sales were down 5.2%.
Among German companies, VW sales were down 6.0%, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 20.6% and BMW sales were down 6.1%.
Jaguar Land Rover sales fell 32.2% from last November, while Volvo sales increased 20.3%.
The top 10 best-selling models in November, in order, were Ford F-Series pickups, Chevrolet Silverado pickups, Ram pickups, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Camry, Honda CR-V, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Equinox, and Toyota Highlander.

There were 28 selling days in October 2020, one more than the 27 selling days in October 2019.
October’s passenger car sales fell 9.3% to 316,712 units, resulting in a 23.3% market share, while SUV and truck sales increased 4.7% to 1,045,146 units, resulting in a 76.7% market share.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for October 2020 was 16.41 million units versus 16.86 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales increased 23.6% in October, while Ford sales decreased 6.1% and FCA sales fell 10.1%.
Tesla sales increased 40.0% to approximately 19,600 units, grabbing about 1.4% of total U.S. market share.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota sales were up 8.0%, Nissan sales were down 30.8%,
Honda sales were down 3.4%, Mazda sales were up 16.5%, and Subaru sales were up 10.6%.
Hyundai sales were down 1.0% and Kia sales were up 12.2%.
Among German companies, VW sales were up 4.0%, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 9.5% and BMW sales were down 2.6%.

U.S. auto sales up 6.2% in SeptemberU.S. new vehicle sales of 1,351,643 units for the month of September represented a 6.2% increase from September 2019, as the U.S. economy rebounds from the COVID-19 crisis.
There were 25 selling days in September 2020, two more than the 23 selling days in September 2019.
September’s passenger car sales fell 8.2% to 318,537 units, resulting in a 23.6% market share, while SUV and truck sales increased 11.6% to 1,033,106 units, resulting in a 76.4% market share.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for September 2020 was 16.36 million units versus 17.17 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales increased 13.8% in September and Ford sales increased 9.3%, while FCA sales fell 1.3%.
Tesla sales increased 30.6% to approximately 20,900 units.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota sales were up 17.4%, Nissan sales were down 27.1%,
Honda sales were up 11.5%, Mazda sales were up 28.7%, and Subaru sales were up 16.3%.
Hyundai sales were up 4.5% and Kia sales were up 24.4%.
Among German companies, VW sales were up 6.7%, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 31.1% and BMW sales were up 1.9%.
Jaguar Land Rover sales fell 17.0% from last September, while Volvo sales increased 10.2%.
The top 10 best-selling models in September, in order, were Ford F-Series pickups, Ram pickups, Chevrolet Silverado pickups, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Toyota Camry, Chevrolet Equinox, Toyota Highlander, GMC Sierra pickups, and Honda Civic.

U.S. auto sales decline 20.2% in AugustU.S. new vehicle sales of 1,319,682 units for the month of August represented a 20.2% decrease from August 2019, due to the lingering effects of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
August’s passenger car sales fell 30.1% to 310,029 units, resulting in a 23.5% market share, while SUV and truck sales decreased 16.6% to 1,009,653 units, resulting in a 76.5% market share.
There were 26 selling days in August 2020, two less than the 28 selling days in August 2019.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for August 2020 was 15.2 million units versus 17.2 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales fell 24.4% in August, Ford sales fell 12.0%, and FCA sales fell 20.3%, but Tesla sales increased 43.9% to approximately to 19,000 units.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota sales were down 23.3%, Nissan sales were down 42.0%, Honda sales were down 21.9%, Mazda sales were down 5.1%, and Subaru sales were down 17.4%.
Hyundai sales were down 8.8% and Kia sales were down 6.1%.
Among German companies, VW sales were down 15.4%, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 20.5% and BMW sales were down 25.8%.
Jaguar Land Rover sales fell 20.5% from last August, while Volvo sales increased 12.9%.
The top 10 best-selling models in August, in order, were Ford F-Series pickups, Ram pickups, Chevrolet Silverado pickups, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, GMC Sierra pickups, Chevrolet Equinox, and Toyota Highlander.

U.S. auto sales drop 12.2% in JulyU.S. new vehicle sales of 1,227,420 units for the month of July represented a 12.2% decrease from July 2019, due to the continuing COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
July’s passenger car sales fell 24.5% to 295,468 units, resulting in a 24.1% market share, while SUV and truck sales decreased 7.5% to 931,952 units, resulting in a 75.9% market share.
There were 26 selling days in July 2020, one more than the 25 selling days in July 2019.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for July 2020 was 14.53 million units versus 17.02 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales fell 13.4% in July, Ford sales fell 9.2%, and FCA sales fell 6.9%, while Tesla sales increased 23.4% to approximately to 15,800 units.
Among Japanese companies, Mazda sales were up 3.4%, while Toyota sales were down 19.3%, Nissan sales were down 25.7%, Honda sales were down 11.2%, and Subaru sales were down 19.7%.
Kia sales were down 1.7%, while Hyundai sales were basically flat, selling only 8 more units than in July 2019.
Among German companies, VW sales were down 11.1%, Mercedes sales were down 2.3% and BMW sales were down 24.3%.
Jaguar Land Rover sales fell 18.0% from last July, while Volvo sales increased 10.3%, making this the company’s best July since 2006.
The top 10 best-selling models in July, in order, were Ford F-Series pickups, Ram pickups, Chevrolet Silverado pickups, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Honda Civic, Toyota Camry, Nissan Rogue, Chevrolet Equinox, and GMC Sierra pickups.

U.S. auto sales fall 26.4% in June as pandemic effects continueU.S. new vehicle sales of 1,111,311 units for the month of June were basically flat with the preceding month of May, at 1,111,723 units, but represented a 26.4% decrease from June 2019, as effects from the coronavirus pandemic continue.
June’s passenger car sales fell 41.8% to 258,884 units, resulting in a 23.3% market share, while SUV and truck sales decreased 20.0% to 852,427 units, resulting in a 76.7% market share.
There were 25 selling days in June 2020, compared to 26 days in June 2019.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for June 2020 was 13.15 million units versus 17.23 million units a year ago.
Compared to June 2019, estimated General Motors monthly sales fell 29.5%, Ford sales fell 27.8%, FCA sales fell 33.1%, and Tesla sales fell 22.6%.
Among Japanese companies, Mazda sales were up only 10.9%, while Toyota sales were down 26.1%, Nissan sales were down 47.1%, Honda sales were down 15.5%, and Subaru sales were down 12.4%.
Hyundai sales were down 22.0% and Kia sales were down 15.7%.
Among German companies, VW sales were down 21.4%, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 16.0% and BMW sales were down 28.6%.
Jaguar Land Rover sales increased 3.0% from last June, while Volvo sales rose 4.5%.
The top 10 best-selling models in June, in order, were Ford F-Series pickups, Ram pickups, Chevrolet Silverado pickups, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Honda Civic, Chevrolet Equinox, Jeep Wrangler, Subaru Forester, and Nissan Rogue.

Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for May 2020 was 12.17 million units versus 17.47 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales fell 32.7% in May, Ford sales fell 33.2%, FCA sales fell 37.3%, and Tesla sales fell 27.9%.
Among Japanese companies, Mazda sales were down only 1.0%, while Toyota sales were down 26.4%, Nissan sales were down 50.5%, Honda sales were down 16.9%, and Subaru sales were down 18.7%.
Hyundai sales were down 13.8% and Kia sales were down 23.7%.
Among German companies, VW sales were down 30.1%, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 30.0% and BMW sales were down 34.8%.

U.S. auto sales tumble 46.6% in April as COVID-19 shutdown continuesU.S. new vehicle sales of 710,827 units for the month of April represented a 46.6% decrease from April 2019, due to the continuing COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic across the country.
April’s passenger car sales fell 57.3% to 169,585 units, resulting in a 23.9% market share, while SUV and truck sales decreased 42.1% to 541,242 units, resulting in a 76.1% market share.
While nominally there were 26 selling days in April 2020, one more than the 25 days in April 2019, dealerships in some U.S. states were closed due to government emergency declarations.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for April 2020 was 8.6 million units versus 16.52 million units a year ago.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales fell 41.1% in April, Ford sales fell 38.4%, FCA sales fell 46.8%, and Tesla sales fell 41.5%.
Among Japanese companies Toyota sales were down 53.7%, Nissan sales were down 51.2%, Honda sales were down 54.1%, Subaru sales were down 46.6%, and Mazda sales were down 44.5%.
Hyundai sales were down 39.0% and Kia sales were down 38.3%
Among German companies, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 56.0%, BMW sales were down 69.6%, VW brand sales were down 36.0%, and Audi sales were down 59.1%.
Jaguar Land Rover sales fell 60.0% from last April, while Volvo sales also fell 60.0%
The top 10 best-selling models in April, in order, were Ford F-Series pickups, Chevrolet Silverado pickups, Ram pickups, GMC Sierra pickups, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Tacoma, Honda Civic, Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Equinox, and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

U.S. auto sales drops 38.4% in March affected by COVID-19U.S. new vehicle sales of 990,332 units for the month of March represented a 38.4% decrease from March 2019, due in large part to the current COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic across the country.
March’s passenger car sales fell 46.1% to 266,612 units, resulting in a 26.9% market share, while SUV and truck sales decreased 35.0% to 723,720 units, resulting in a 73.1% market share.
While nominally there were 25 selling days in March 2020, two less than the 27 days in March 2019, dealerships in some U.S. states were closed at least part of the month.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for March 2020 was 11.35 million units versus 17.36 million units a year ago.
An outlier to the industry, Tesla’s estimated 13,400 U.S. sales in March, including its new Model Y, were up 3.1% from the same month in 2019.
Estimated General Motors monthly sales fell 37.3% in March, Ford sales fell 26.6%, and FCA sales increased 36.3%.
Among Japanese companies Toyota sales were down 38.0%, Nissan sales were down 48.5%, Honda sales were down 48.0%, Subaru sales were down 47.1%, and Mazda sales were down 41.8%.
Hyundai sales were down 42.4% and Kia sales were down 18.6%
Among German companies, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 39.2%, BMW sales were down 50.3%, VW brand sales were down 41.7%, and Audi sales were down 52.4%.
Jaguar sales fell 35.0% from last March, while Volvo sales fell 42.7%

U.S. auto sales leap 8.6% in FebruaryU.S. new vehicle sales of 1,373,324 units for the month of February represented an 8.6% increase from February 2019.
February’s passenger car sales fell 2.9% to 365,309 units, resulting in a 29.7% market share, while SUV and truck sales increased 13.4% to 1,008,015 units, resulting in a 70.3% market share.
There were 26 selling days in February 2020, two more than the 24 days in February 2019, resulting in generally higher unit sales for all OEMs.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for February 2020 was 17.04 million units versus 16.70 million units a year ago.
As many OEMs have now switched to reporting quarterly sales, those with sales organizations continuing to report monthly sales include Honda with sales up 4.2%, Subaru sales up 5.3%, Mazda up 19.0%, Mitsubishi up 13.0%, Kia up 20.2%, Hyundai, including the Genesis brand, up 15.8%, and Volvo up18.3%
Estimated General Motors monthly sales increased 14.1% in February, Ford sales increased 2.6%, and FCA sales increased 13.5%.
Tesla’s estimated 20,450 sales in February were up 32.8% from the same month in 2019.
Estimated Toyota sales were up 13.1%, while Nissan sales were down 13.2%.
Among German companies, Mercedes-Benz estimated sales increased 7.0%, BMW sales increased 4.3%, and VW sales increased 10.3% compared to February 2019.
Jaguar Land Rover estimated sales fell 2.4% from last February.

U.S. auto sales rise 1.0% in JanuaryU.S. new vehicle sales of 1,144,279 units for the month of January represented a 1.0% increase from January 2019.
January’s passenger car sales fell 14.8% to 300,983 units, resulting in a 26.3% market share, while SUV and truck sales increased 8.1% to 843,296 units, resulting in a 73.7% market share.
There were 25 selling days in January 2020, the same as in January 2019.
Light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) for January 2020 was 17.07 million units versus 16.72 million units one year ago.
As many OEMs have now switched to reporting quarterly sales, those with sales organizations continuing to report monthly sales include Honda with sales down 4.3%, while Subaru sales increased 0.5%, Mazda increased 17.8%, Mitsubishi increased 22.0%, Kia increased 8.0%, Hyundai, including the Genesis brand, increased 5.1%, and Volvo increased 5.2%
Estimated General Motors monthly sales increased 12.6% in January, while Ford sales decreased 9.2%, and FCA sales fell 0.6%.
Tesla’s estimated 22,350 sales in January were up 20.8% from the same month in 2019.
Estimated Toyota sales were up 7.0%, while Nissan sales were down 19.9%
Among German companies, Mercedes-Benz estimated sales increased 6.8%, BMW sales increased 4.3%, and VW sales increased 8.1% compared to January 2019.
Jaguar Land Rover estimated sales fell 9.8% from last January.
The top 10 best-selling models in January, in order, were Ford F-Series pickups, Chevrolet Silverado pickups, Ram pickups, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Toyota Camry, Chevrolet Equinox, Toyota Corolla, Nissan Rogue, and Honda Civic.
The Tesla Model 3 was the 11th best-selling vehicle in the U.S. in the month of January, with 19,000 estimated sales.
