UK passenger car sales increase 2.6% in 2024
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on January 6, UK passenger car sales fell 0.2% on the year to 140,786 units in December 2024. Year-to-date sales rose 2.6% with 1,952,778 cars registered in 2024.
2024 sales for VW rose 2.6% to 166,304 units (8.5% market share), BMW sales increased 12.1% to 125,265 units (6.4% share), and Audi sales decreased 10.9% to 122,431 units (6.3% share). Kia sales were up 4.2% to 112,252 units (5.7% share), while Ford sales plunged 23.7% to 109,955 units (5.6% share).
The best-selling cars in 2024 were Ford Puma (48,340 units), followed by Kia Sportage (47,163 units), Nissan Qashqai (42,418 units), Nissan Juke (34,454 units), and Tesla Model Y (32,862 units).
Compared to 2023, gasoline-engine car sales were down 4.4% to 1,019,128 units (52.2% share), electric vehicles (EVs) jumped 21.4% to 381,970 units (19.6% share), hybrid vehicles (HEVs) rose 9.6% to 261,398 units (13.4% share), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) increased 18.3% to 167,178 units (8.6% share), diesel-engine car sales decreased 13.6% to 123,104 units (6.3% share).
EVs take record annual volume and market share at 19.6%, but figure still below mandated levels (22%).
In 2024, private car sales decreased 8.7% to 746,276 units (38.2% share), fleet sales increased 11.8% to 1,163,855 units (59.6% share), and businesses sales fell 3.1% to 42,647 units (2.2% share).
“A record year for EV registrations underscores vehicle manufacturers’ unswerving commitment to a decarbonised new car market, with more choice, better range and increased affordability than ever before. This has come at huge cost, however, with the billions invested in new models being supplemented by generous incentives which are unsustainable,” SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes said.

UK passenger car sales fall 6.0% in October
UK passenger car sales fell 6.0% to 144,288 units in October 2024, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on November 5. Year-to-date sales increased 3.3% with 1,658,382 cars registered in the first ten months of 2024.
In October, sales for VW increased 1.8% to 13,294 units (9.2% market share), BMW sales dropped 15.9% to 9,407 units (6.5% share), Audi sales plunged 28.5% to 9,009 units (6.2% share), Ford sales plummeted 27.5% to 8,792 units (6.1% share) and Kia sales soared 24.7% to 8,516 units (5.9% share).
The best-selling car in October 2024 was Kia Sportage (4,533 units), followed by Ford Puma (3,521 units), MINI Cooper (2,921 units), Volvo XC40 (2,675 units) and VW Tiguan (2,477 units).
Compared to October 2023, gasoline-engine car sales dropped 14.2% to 72,681 units (50.4% share), electric vehicles (EVs) jumped 24.5% to 29,802 units (20.7% share), hybrid vehicles (HEV) fell 1.6% to 19,012 units (13.2% share), plug-in hybrids (PHEV) fell 3.2% to 13,832 units (9.6% share), and diesel-engine car sales plunged 20.5% to 8,961 units (6.2% share).
Battery electric is the only powertrain to see uptake rise as manufacturers continue to subsidize transition with billions in unsustainable discounting.
“EVs already work for many people and businesses, but to shift the entire market at the pace demanded requires significant intervention on incentives, infrastructure and regulation,” Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said.
In October, private car sales fell 11.8% to 54,853 units (38.0% share), fleet sales fell 1.7% to 86,701 units (60.1% share) and business sales dropped 12.8% to 2,734 units (1.9% share). Declines were recorded across all buyer types in the month.
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons rose 2.4% to 26,974 units, sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons surged 113.6% to 833 units while sales of taxis plunged 60.6% to 87 units in October.
