UK car production decrease 5.2% to 80,392 units in December, down 13.9% in 2019
On January 30, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK car production for December decreased 5.2% over the previous year to 80,392 units. Passenger car production was down 6.4% to 73,080 units and commercial vehicle production was up 8.7% to 7,312 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was up by 0.3% to 151,204 units.
Vehicle exports down 2.3% (y/y) to 66,870 units and domestic sales decreased 17.6% (y/y) to 13,522 units. The percentage of export was 83.2%.
Full-year production of 1,381,405 vehicles in 2019 represented a decrease of 13.9% from 2018. The passenger car production was down 14.2% to 1,303,135 units, commercial vehicle was down 7.8% to 78,270 units and engines were down 7.2% to 2,520,165 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "The fall of UK car manufacturing to its lowest level in almost a decade is of grave concern. Every country in the world wants a successful automotive sector as it is a driver of trade, productivity and jobs. Given the uncertainty the sector has experienced, it is essential we re-establish our global competitiveness and that starts with an ambitious free trade agreement with Europe, one that guarantees all automotive products can be bought and sold without tariffs or additional burdens. This will boost manufacturing, avoid costly price rises and maintain choice for UK consumers. Negotiations will be challenging but all sides stand to gain and this sector is up for it. "

On October 31, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for September decreased 4.3% over the previous year to 129,576 units. Passenger car production was down 3.8% to 122,256 units and commercial vehicle production was down 11.7% to 7,320 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was down by 1.9% to 220,770 units.
Vehicle exports decreased 2.4% (y/y) to 103,015 units and domestic sales decreased 10.9% (y/y) to 26,561 units. The percentage of export was 79.5%.
In the first nine months of 2019, total vehicle production decreased 15.5% (y/y) to 1,042,211 units. The passenger car production was down 15.6% to 989,174 units, commercial vehicle was down 13.2% to 53,037 units and engines were down 7.4% to 1,909,751 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Another bitterly disappointing month reflects domestic and international market contraction. Most worrying of all though is the continued threat of a ‘no deal’ Brexit, something which has caused international investment to stall and cost UK operations hundreds of millions of pounds, money that would have better been spent in meeting the technological challenges facing the global industry. A general election may ultimately provide some certainty, but does not yet remove the spectre of no deal which will continue to inhibit the UK industry’s prospects unless we can agree and implement a new, ambitious and permanent relationship that safeguards free and frictionless trade."

UK vehicle production increase 5.1% to 97,702 units in August
On September 26, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for August increased 5.1% over the previous year to 97,702 units. Passenger car production was up 3.3% to 92,158 units and commercial vehicle production was up 47.9% to 5,544 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was up by 7.6% to 163,433 units.
Vehicle exports increased 2.6% (y/y) to 77,045 units and domestic sales increased 15.4% (y/y) to 20,657 units. The percentage of export was 78.9%.
In the first eight months of 2019, total vehicle production decreased 16.9% (y/y) to 912,635 units. The passenger car production was down 17.0% to 866,918 units, commercial vehicle was down 13.4% to 45,717 units and engines were down 8.1% to 1,688,981 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "While growth is always welcome, today’s figures mask the underlying downward trend and strengthening global headwinds facing the sector, including international trade tensions, massive technological upheaval and, in the UK, political and economic uncertainty. Softening of global demand is compounding the challenge to UK manufacturers for whom a ‘no deal’ Brexit would be a hammer blow. The mere threat of no deal has undermined investment and the potential imposition of tariffs, border delays and additional administrative burdens would damage competitiveness. We now need parliament and government to redouble efforts to get a deal that maintains free and frictionless trade. Given the ongoing challenges and costs being incurred, there is not a moment to lose."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Another month of decline for UK car manufacturing is a serious concern. The sector is overwhelmingly reliant on exports and the global headwinds are strong, with escalating trade tensions, softening demand and significant technological change. With the UK market also weak, the importance of maintaining the UK’s global competitiveness has never been more important so we need a Brexit deal - and quickly - to unlock investment and safeguard the long term future of a sector which has recently been such an international success story."

In the first half of 2019, total vehicle production decreased 19.9% (y/y) to 701,651 units. The passenger car production was down 20.1% to 666,521 units, commercial vehicle was down 15.8% to 35,130 units and engines were down 10.8% to 1,329,406 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Today’s figures are the result of global instability compounded by ongoing fear of ‘no deal’. This fear is causing investment to stall, as hundreds of millions of pounds are diverted to Brexit cliff-edge mitigation - money that would be better spent tackling technological and environmental challenges. The industry’s foundations are fundamentally strong, however, and we’re ready to work with the new government to build on these through the industrial strategy. We need an internationally competitive business environment to encourage more investment, more innovation and more growth. That starts with an ambitious Brexit deal that maintains frictionless trade and we look to the new administration to get a deal done quickly so manufacturers can get back to the business of building cars and helping deliver a brighter future for Britain."

In the first five months of 2019, total vehicle production decreased 20.4% (y/y) to 589,080 units. The passenger car production was down 21.0% to 557,295 units, commercial vehicle was down 6.3% to 31,785 units and engines were down 11.0% to 1,122,762 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "12 consecutive months of decline for UK car manufacturing is a serious concern and underlines yet again the importance of securing a Brexit deal quickly. The sector is facing multiple seismic challenges simultaneously: technological, environmental and economic. The ongoing political instability and uncertainty over our future overseas trade relationships, most notably with Europe, is not helping and, while the industry’s fundamentals remain strong, a brighter future is only possible if we secure a deal that can help us regain our reputation as an attractive location for automotive investment. No deal is not an option."

Prolonged instability has done untold damage, with the fear of ‘no deal’ holding back progress, causing investment to stall, jobs to be lost and undermining our global reputation. This is why ‘no deal’ must be taken off the table immediately and permanently, so industry can get back to the business of delivering for the economy and keeping the UK at the forefront of the global technology race."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "The ninth months of decline for UK car production should be a wakeup call for anyone who thinks this industry, already challenged by international trade hostilities, declining markets and technological disruption, could survive a ‘no deal’ Brexit without serious damage. A managed no deal is a fantasy. Uncertainty has already paralysed investment, cost jobs and damaged our global reputation. Business anxiety has now reached fever pitch and we desperately need parliament to come together to restore stability so that we can start to rebuild investor confidence and get back to the business of delivering for the economy."

UK vehicle production decrease 15.5% to 129,831 units in January
On February 28, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for January decreased 15.5% over the previous year to 129,831 units. Passenger car production was down 18.2% to 120,649 units and commercial vehicle production was up 49.1% to 9,182 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was down by 9.5% to 241,727 units.
Vehicle exports down 19.8% (y/y) to 98,949 units and domestic sales increased 2.0% (y/y) to 30,882 units. The percentage of export was 76.2%.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Another month of decline is a serious concern. The industry faces myriad challenges, from falling demand in key markets, to escalating global trade tensions and the need to stay at the forefront of future technology. But, the clear and present danger remains the threat of a ‘no deal’ Brexit, which is monopolising time and resources, undermining competitiveness. Every day a ‘no deal’ Brexit remains a possibility is another day automotive companies pay the price in additional and potentially pointless costs. ‘No deal’ must be taken off the table immediately and permanently."
