UK vehicle production decrease 11.8% to 113,282 units in July
On August 29, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for July decreased 11.8% over the previous year to 113,282 units. Passenger car production was down 10.6% to 108,239 units and commercial vehicle production was down 31.2% to 5,043 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was up by 0.6% to 196,142 units.
Vehicle exports decreased 15.6% (y/y) to 89,628 units and domestic sales increased 6.9% (y/y) to 23,654 units. The percentage of export was 79.1%.
In the first seven months of 2019, total vehicle production decreased 18.9% (y/y) to 814,933 units. The passenger car production was down 18.9% to 774,760 units, commercial vehicle was down 18.1% to 40,173 units and engines were down 9.5% to 1,525,548 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Another month of decline for UK car manufacturing is a serious concern. The sector is overwhelmingly reliant on exports and the global headwinds are strong, with escalating trade tensions, softening demand and significant technological change. With the UK market also weak, the importance of maintaining the UK’s global competitiveness has never been more important so we need a Brexit deal - and quickly - to unlock investment and safeguard the long term future of a sector which has recently been such an international success story."

UK vehicle production decrease 17.6% to 112,571 units in June
On July 31, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for June decreased 17.6% over the previous year to 112,571 units. Passenger car production was down 15.2% to 109,226 units and commercial vehicle production was down 57.2% to 3,345 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was down by 9.5% to 206,644 units.
Vehicle exports decreased 21.6% (y/y) to 92,418 units and domestic sales increased 7.5% (y/y) to 20,153 units. The percentage of export was 82.1%.
In the first half of 2019, total vehicle production decreased 19.9% (y/y) to 701,651 units. The passenger car production was down 20.1% to 666,521 units, commercial vehicle was down 15.8% to 35,130 units and engines were down 10.8% to 1,329,406 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Today’s figures are the result of global instability compounded by ongoing fear of ‘no deal’. This fear is causing investment to stall, as hundreds of millions of pounds are diverted to Brexit cliff-edge mitigation - money that would be better spent tackling technological and environmental challenges. The industry’s foundations are fundamentally strong, however, and we’re ready to work with the new government to build on these through the industrial strategy. We need an internationally competitive business environment to encourage more investment, more innovation and more growth. That starts with an ambitious Brexit deal that maintains frictionless trade and we look to the new administration to get a deal done quickly so manufacturers can get back to the business of building cars and helping deliver a brighter future for Britain."

Production of engines was down by 10.1% to 223,314 units.
Vehicle exports down 15.7% (y/y) to 94,596 units and domestic sales decreased 26.5% (y/y) to 23,549 units. The percentage of export was 80.1%.
In the first five months of 2019, total vehicle production decreased 20.4% (y/y) to 589,080 units. The passenger car production was down 21.0% to 557,295 units, commercial vehicle was down 6.3% to 31,785 units and engines were down 11.0% to 1,122,762 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "12 consecutive months of decline for UK car manufacturing is a serious concern and underlines yet again the importance of securing a Brexit deal quickly. The sector is facing multiple seismic challenges simultaneously: technological, environmental and economic. The ongoing political instability and uncertainty over our future overseas trade relationships, most notably with Europe, is not helping and, while the industry’s fundamentals remain strong, a brighter future is only possible if we secure a deal that can help us regain our reputation as an attractive location for automotive investment. No deal is not an option."

Prolonged instability has done untold damage, with the fear of ‘no deal’ holding back progress, causing investment to stall, jobs to be lost and undermining our global reputation. Just a few years ago, industry was on track to produce two million cars by 2020 - a target now impossible with Britain’s reputation as stable and attractive business environment undermined. All parties must find a compromise urgently so we can set about repairing the damage and diverting energy and investment to the technological challenges that will define the future of the global industry."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "The ninth months of decline for UK car production should be a wakeup call for anyone who thinks this industry, already challenged by international trade hostilities, declining markets and technological disruption, could survive a ‘no deal’ Brexit without serious damage. A managed no deal is a fantasy. Uncertainty has already paralysed investment, cost jobs and damaged our global reputation. Business anxiety has now reached fever pitch and we desperately need parliament to come together to restore stability so that we can start to rebuild investor confidence and get back to the business of delivering for the economy."
