Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "With fewer than 60 days before we leave the EU and the risk of crashing out without a deal looking increasingly real, UK Automotive is on red alert. Brexit uncertainty has already done enormous damage to output, investment and jobs. Yet this is nothing compared with the permanent devastation caused by severing our frictionless trade links overnight, not just with the EU but with the many other global markets with which we currently trade freely. Given the global headwinds, the challenges to the sector are immense. Brexit is the clear and present danger and, with thousands of jobs on the line, we urge all parties to do whatever it takes to save us from ‘no deal’. "

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "The fifth consecutive month of decline for UK car manufacturing is undoubtedly concerning and, while a number of factors have been at play, there is no doubt that business and consumer uncertainty is having a significant impact. With eight in 10 British-built cars destined for overseas markets, the majority to the EU, the sector’s dependence on exports cannot be downplayed. Europe is our largest trading partner and securing the right Brexit agreement which allows free and frictionless trade is vital for the future health of our industry."

UK vehicle production decrease 15.3% to 135,332 units in September
On October 25, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for September decreased 15.3% over the previous year to 135,332 units. Passenger car production was down 16.8% to 127,051 units and commercial vehicle production was up 14.9% to 8,281 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was down by 9.5% to 224,975 units.
Vehicle exports decreased 16.1% (y/y) to 105,503 units and domestic sales decreased 12.5% (y/y) to 29,829 units. The percentage of export was 78.0%.
In the first nine months of 2018, total vehicle production decreased 6.3% (y/y) to 1,232,524 units. The passenger car production was down 6.6% to 1,171,765 units, commercial vehicle was down 0.8% to 60,759 units and engines were up 3.0% to 2,061,940 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Today’s figures highlight the many competing challenges facing UK Automotive. It has been a turbulent year and the industry needs stability, something which appears elusive given the lack of resolution to Brexit negotiations. The UK government has recognised the importance of a deal that maintains free and frictionless trade with the EU, but it is up to all sides to deliver this to safeguard the hundreds of thousands of jobs depending on the sector. Stability is also needed at home and a stronger UK new car market would go a long way to boosting manufacturing output. The Chancellor’s Budget next week is the perfect opportunity to stimulate the market, sending consumers and businesses the right signals to encourage the purchase of new cars, which would help bolster economic performance as well as delivering environmental goals."

Vehicle exports decreased 3.7% (y/y) to 75,084 units and domestic sales decreased 36.8% (y/y) to 17,855 units. The percentage of export was 80.8%.
In the first eight months of 2018, total vehicle production decreased 5.1% (y/y) to 1,097,185 units. The passenger car production was down 5.2% to 1,044,707 units, commercial vehicle was down 2.9% to 52,478 units and engines were up 4.8% to 1,836,965 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "The quieter summer months are often subject to fluctuations due to the variable timing and duration of annual maintenance and re-tooling shutdowns. This instability was exacerbated in August, with the industry racing to recertify entire model ranges to meet tougher testing standards in force on September 1. With exports, the majority to the EU, continuing to drive demand, it underscores the importance of a Brexit agreement to safeguard this trade; for our sector, ‘no deal’ is not an option."

The bigger picture is complex and month by month fluctuations are inevitable as manufacturers manage product cycles, operational changes and the delicate balance of supply and demand from market to market. To ensure future growth, we need political and economic clarity at home, and the continuation of beneficial trading arrangements with the EU and other key markets."

UK vehicle production decrease 5.0% to 136,568 units in June
On July 31, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for June decreased 5.0% over the previous year to 136,568 units. Passenger car production was down 5.5% to 128,799 units and commercial vehicle production was up 6.1% to 7,769 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was down by 3.5% to 228,324 units.
Vehicle exports increased 6.1% (y/y) to 117,865 units and domestic sales decreased 42.6% (y/y) to 18,703 units. The percentage of export was 86.3%.
In the first half of 2018, total vehicle production decreased 3.4% (y/y) to 875,864 units. The passenger car production was down 3.3% to 834,402 units, commercial vehicle was down 5.3% to 41,462 units and engines were up 5.7% to 1,490,122 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "June’s results demonstrate the risks of judging automotive performance one month in isolation, with numerous and varied factors creating a perfect storm for home market output. Looking at the longer-term picture, the sector is performing as expected in the context of market conditions at home and abroad. First half figures are a reminder of the exports-led nature of UK Automotive, the integrated EU supply chain and our mutual dependency on free and frictionless trade. The UK government’s latest Brexit proposals are a step in the right direction to safeguard future growth, jobs and consumer choice - not just in Britain but right across Europe. We now look to negotiators on both sides to recognise the needs of the whole European automotive industry which, combined, employs more than 12 million people. Any disruption risks undermining one of our most valuable shared economic assets."

UK vehicle production increase 1.2% to 144,058 units in May
On June 28, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for May increased 1.2% over the previous year to 144,058 units. Passenger car production was up 1.3% to 137,225 units and commercial vehicle production was down 0.6% to 6,833 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was up by 5.1% to 242,391 units.
Vehicle exports down 1.0% (y/y) to 112,186 units and domestic sales increased 9.8% (y/y) to 31,872 units. The percentage of export was 77.9%.
In the first five months of 2018, total vehicle production decreased 3.2% (y/y) to 738,987 units. The passenger car production was down 2.9% to 705,603 units, commercial vehicle was down 8.4% to 33,384 units and engines were up 7.1% to 1,255,847 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Following the significant decline in output in May last year as several manufacturers geared up to deliver new models, growth this month was to be expected. For this to continue, we need to ensure UK car plants are able to attract future investment, and this will depend upon maintaining the competitive conditions that have helped drive the industry’s success in recent years. Given our dependency on the EU as our biggest customer and supplier, that means retaining the benefits of the single market and membership of the customs union - the minimum requirement for frictionless trade."

UK vehicle production increase 5.9% to 135,251 units in April
On May 31, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for April increased 5.9% over the previous year to 135,251 units. Passenger car production was up 5.2% to 127,952 units and commercial vehicle production was up 19.0% to 7,299 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was up by 17.3% to 232,400 units.
Vehicle exports up 5.7% (y/y) to 108,837 units and domestic sales increased 6.7% (y/y) to 26,414 units. The percentage of export was 80.5%.
In the first four months of 2018, total vehicle production decreased 4.2% (y/y) to 594,929 units. The passenger car production was down 3.9% to 568,378 units, commercial vehicle was down 10.2% to 26,551 units and engines were up 7.5% to 1,013,456 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "While April’s growth isn’t altogether surprising given the significant decline in output this time last year, it is good to see earlier planned investment into new models delivering results. However, given such investment was made on the basis of the free and frictionless trade afforded by our EU membership, the ability of UK plants to attract the next wave of new models and drive future growth depends upon maintaining these competitive conditions after Brexit. That’s why it is critical that government acts to safeguard our participation in the EU customs union and single market."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "A double digit decline in car manufacturing for both home and overseas markets is of considerable concern. Following recent announcements on jobs cutbacks in the sector, it’s vitally important that the industry and consumers receive greater certainty, both about future policies towards diesel and other low emission technologies, and our post-Brexit trading relationships and customs arrangements. Maintaining free and frictionless trade is an absolute priority - it has been fundamental to our past success and is key to our future growth."

UK vehicle production decrease 1.0% to 153,569 units in January
On February 28, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for January decreased 1.0% over the previous year to 153,569 units. Passenger car production was basically flat to 147,481 units and commercial vehicle production was down 18.8% to 6,088 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was up by 13.6% to 267,060 units.
Vehicle exports up 0.6% (y/y) to 123,378 units and domestic sales decreased 7.0% (y/y) to 30,191 units. The percentage of export was 80.3%.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "While it is good to see global appetite for British-built cars reach record levels in January, this only reinforces the industry’s increasing reliance on overseas demand. Future growth will therefore depend on maintaining our current open trade links not just with Europe but with key international markets. A transitional deal will be an important first step but, in the long term, a seamless relationship between the UK and Europe must be maintained. The EU remains the third largest new car market in the world and, given it is on our doorstep, it is not surprising it accounts for more than half of our global exports."
