UK car production decrease 12.7% to 104,357 units in December, down 3.7% in 2017
On January 31, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK car production for December decreased 12.7% over the previous year to 104,357 units. Passenger car production was down 11.7% to 100,604 units and commercial vehicle production was down 33.2% to 3,753 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was up by 12.1% to 177,750 units.
Vehicle exports down 10.1% (y/y) to 89,196 units and domestic sales decreased 25.6% (y/y) to 15,161 units. The percentage of export was 85.5%.
Full-year production of 1,749,385 vehicles in 2017 represented an decrease of 3.7% from 2016. The passenger car production was down 3.0% to 1,671,166 units, commercial vehicle was down 16.7% to 78,219 units and engines were up 6.9% to 2,722,325 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "The UK automotive industry continues to produce cars that are in strong demand across the world and it’s encouraging to see growth in many markets. However, we urgently need clarity on the transitional arrangements for Brexit, arrangements which must retain all the current benefits else around 10% of our exports could be threatened overnight. We compete in a global race to produce the best cars and must continue to attract investment to remain competitive. Whilst such investment is often cyclical, the evidence is that it is now stalling so we need rapid progress on trade discussions to safeguard jobs and stimulate future growth. "
Hawes spoke as SMMT also released new figures showing that UK automotive investment fell by 33.7% in 2017. Some GBP 1.1 billion of investment earmarked for vehicle and supply chain manufacturing was publicly announced last year, down from GBP 1.66 billion in 2016.

Passenger car production was down 4.6% to 161,490 units and commercial vehicle production was down 34.6% to 6,312 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was up by 11.4% to 279,532 units.
Vehicle exports down 0.8% (y/y) to 141,474 units and domestic sales decreased 27.3% (y/y) to 26,328 units. The percentage of export was 84.3%.
In the first eleven months of 2017, total vehicle production decreased 2.7% (y/y) to 1,651,508 units. The passenger car production was down 2.0% to 1,577,042 units, commercial vehicle was down 15.7% to 74,466 units and engines were up 6.6% to 2,544,575 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Brexit uncertainty, coupled with confusion over diesel taxation and air quality plans, continues to impact domestic demand for new cars and, with it, production output. Whilst it is good to see exports grow in November, this only reinforces how overseas demand remains the driving force for UK car manufacturing. Clarity on the nature of our future overseas trading relationships, including details on transition arrangements with the EU, is vital for future growth and success."

UK car production increase 1.8% to 163,977 units in October
On November 23, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK car production for October increased 1.8% over the previous year to 163,977 units. Passenger car production was up 3.5% to 157,056 units and commercial vehicle production was down 25.7% to 6,921 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was up by 14.7% to 263,141 units.
Vehicle exports up 2.3% (y/y) to 132,825 units and domestic sales decreased 0.4% (y/y) to 31,152 units. The percentage of export was 81.0%.
In the first ten months of 2017, total vehicle production decreased 2.2% (y/y) to 1,484,719 units. The passenger car production was down 1.6% to 1,416,565 units, commercial vehicle was down 13.3% to 68,154 units and engines were up 6.0% to 2,265,039 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "It’s encouraging to see positive growth in exports this month and a slight increase in overall output. Production for British consumers, however, has continued to fall as domestic demand for new cars decreased for the ninth month this year amidst continued uncertainty over both Brexit and the government’s air quality plans. It’s important that confidence is restored to the new car market, as sales of the latest cleaner, greener cars not only address air quality concerns but speed up activity on factory lines across the UK. The latest independent UK forecast report is worrying news for the sector, predicting annual output which is, at best, static compared with last year. The industry needs stability and a clear roadmap for Brexit if we are to encourage investment and arrest the decline in both the market and business confidence."

UK car production decrease 5.3% to 160,432 units in September
On October 26, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK car production for September decreased 5.3% over the previous year to 160,432 units. Passenger car production was down 4.1% to 153,224 units and commercial vehicle production was down 26.0% to 7,208 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was up by 3.9% to 248,463 units.
Vehicle exports down 2.0% (y/y) to 126,301 units and domestic sales decreased 16.0% (y/y) to 34,131 units. The percentage of export was 78.7%.
In the first nine months of 2017, total vehicle production decreased 2.7% (y/y) to 1,320,742 units. The passenger car production was down 2.2% to 1,259,509 units, commercial vehicle was down 11.7% to 61,233 units and engines were up 5.0% to 2,001,898 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "With UK car manufacturing falling for a fifth month this year, it’s clear that declining consumer and business confidence is affecting domestic demand and hence production volumes. Uncertainty regarding the national air quality plans also didn’t help the domestic market for diesel cars, despite the fact that these new vehicles will face no extra charges or restrictions across the UK. Brexit is the greatest challenge of our times and yet we still don’t have any clarity on what our future relationship with our biggest trading partner will look like, nor detail of the transitional deal being sought. Leaving the EU with no deal would be the worst outcome for our sector so we urge government to deliver on its commitments and safeguard the competitiveness of the industry."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "It’s common to see fluctuations during the summer months, as output varies according to the timing and duration of holiday factory shutdowns. However, the continuation of the longer term downward trend in domestic demand is a concern for production across the UK so it is vital for the future health of this sector that the current uncertainty around Brexit is removed and consumer and business confidence restored."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "UK car production lines stepped up a gear in July, as usual bringing forward some production to help manage demand ahead of September and routine summer factory shutdowns. As the timing and length of these manufacturing pauses can shift each year, market performance comparisons for July and August should always be treated with caution, but as long as the economic conditions at home and abroad stay broadly stable we expect new car production to remain in line with expectations for the rest of 2017."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "World-class engineering, productivity, strong government collaboration and massive investment in the past few years have helped UK Automotive become a global success story. At the heart of this has been the free and frictionless trade we’ve enjoyed with the EU - by far our biggest customer and supplier. But Brexit uncertainty is not helping investment and growth is stalling. The government has been in “listening” mode but now it must put on the table the concrete plans that will assure the future competitiveness of the sector. Investors need certainty so, at the very least, the UK must seek an interim deal which maintains single market and customs union membership until we have in place the complex new agreement sought with the EU."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "After a record start to the year, car production in the UK has slowed as production lines gear up for a range of new models. Global demand is strong and exports remain the driving force for British car production volumes in the UK. Maintaining our current open trade links with Europe, our biggest market, and further developing global markets is vital for this sector."
