GM in China (1): plan to boost production capacity of vehicles and engines

GM enhances alliances with SAIC and FAW, targeting production of 4.25 million in 2015

Summary

 GM's business in China has been growing rapidly since 2009. In 2010, the company boosted sales of vehicles (including exports and sales of imported vehicles) by 28.8% year-on-year to 2.35 million. GM expects double-digit growth in the future, targeting to sell more than 5 million vehicles in 2015.

 In the meantime, GM announced that it would gradually increase the production capacity of its joint venture plants in China from 2.15 million per year in July 2011 to 3.17 million at the end of 2012 and further to 4.07 million in 2015, which is assumed to be further enhanced.

 At the same time, the company will increase production capacity of engines from 1.57 million a year in July 2011 to 2.57 million at the end of 2012, which it plans to further boost to 3 million in 2013 or later.


 The following reports GM's recent activities in China on the latest medium-term business plan and the expansion of production of vehicles and engines.

Enhancement of production of vehicles: GM boosts production capacity from 2.36 million in 2011 to 4 million in 2015

 In 2010, GM produced about 2.29 million, which exceeds the company's production capacity of 2.15 million per year in July 2011. GM says that it plans to boost production capacity in China to 3.17 million a year in 2012, 3.7 million in 2014 and further to 4 million in 2015 or later (based on GM's announcement, phone survey, and various media reports).

 Concerning joint venture plants with SAIC, GM will build a new plant in Yantai and Qingdao, Shandong province, Shenyang, Liaoning province, and Liuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and will also expand its existing plant in Liuzhou, thereby boosting annual production capacity.

 As for joint venture plants with FAW (China FAW Group), GM will construct a new plant in Changchun, Jilin province, Harbin, Heilongjiang province, and Qujing, Yunnan province.

Shanghai GM Group (The factories are in Shanghai, Yantai and Shenyang city)

Yantai plant of Shandong province: starts construction of a new plant (the third-stage construction), boosting production capacity to 600,000 (2 shifts) a year in 2012
 At the end of 2010, Shanghai GM's Yantai plant of Shandong province (Shanghai GM Dong Yue Motors) completed the expansion work of its existing passenger car plant, boosting production capacity from 240,000 (2 shifts) a year to 300,0000 (2 shifts).
 In the meantime, in June 2010, Shanghai GM Dong Yue Motors initiated construction of a new passenger car plant (the third-stage construction) in the adjacent site of its existing plant. The total investment is worth 2.1 billion RMB. The construction is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2012. The new plant will have body welding/painting/assembly facilities as well as auxiliary facilities including test course. The new plant is capable of producing 300,000 per year (2 shifts).
 Combined with the existing plant, the production capacity of passenger cars by the Yantai plant will double to 600,000 per year (2 shifts) (more than 120 per hour). The new plant will introduce module production and flexible production. With the expansion of the Yantai plant, the number of Tier 1/Tier 2 suppliers in Yantai will increase by about 120 to 360.
Shenyang plant: announces construction of a new plant (the third-stage construction) to prepare production capacity of 500,000 passenger cars
 Shanghai GM's Shenyang plant (Shanghai GM Norsom) announced that it would begin a 3rd-stage construction of a (new) plant as early as in July 2011. The expansion work has already won approval from the government. It has not been made public when it will be completed and when operations will start.
 The new plant is located at Shenyang Automobile City Industrial Park in the Dadong District, which is 7.5km north of the existing plant (Shenyang plant). The site area is 2.2 million square meters. The total investment is worth 7 billion RMB. It has stamping/welding/painting/assembly facilities as well as a powertrain plant. The new plant is capable of producing 300,000 passenger cars a year. It will mainly produce passenger cars that use GM's Delta 2 platform.

 

SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile (The factories are in Liuzhou and Qingdao)

Liuzhou existing plant: boosts production capacity from the current 600,000 to 810,000 a year in 2012
 SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile is currently upgrading and expanding the east and west plants of the existing plant in Liuzhou in order to divide production lines into one for passenger cars and one for commercial vehicles.
 For the west plant, the company already completed the transfer of a production line for compact (mini) commercial vehicles to the east plant, the addition of a production line for passenger cars under the company's own Baojun brand (the first model is the Baojun 630 sedan), and upgrading of production lines for passenger cars including the Lechi hatchback that is based on the Chevrolet Spark and the Wuling Hongguang minivan by July 2011.
 The company is currently conducting the expansion work to increase the production capacity of the east plant to 110,000 a year, planning to complete it by the end of 2012. In July 2011, the existing plant in Liuzhou has a production capacity of 700,000 passenger cars a year (380,000 by the west plant and 320,000 by the east plant), which the company expects to increase to 810,000 by the end of 2012.
Liuzhou new plant: completes construction of a plant for vehicles under Baojun brand at the end of 2012, preparing production capacity of 400,000
 In February 2011, SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile started a 1st-stage construction of a new passenger car plant, which is a special plant for vehicles under the company's own brand, Baojun, at Liuzhou Automobile City in Liudong Xinqu, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which is in the suburbs of Liuzhou city. The construction is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2012.
 The total investment in the 1st-stage construction of the new plant in Liudong Xinqu is worth 8 billion RMB. The site area is 1,566,700 square meters. It is built based on GM's standards, including GM-GMS (General Motors Global Manufacturing System). The new plant has a production capacity of 400,000 passenger cars a year. Combined with an existing (old) plant in Liuzhou, SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile plans to increase production capacity in Liuzhou to 1.21 million per year at the end of 2012.
 The plant in Liudong Xinqu, Liuzhou city mainly produces the Baojun 630 and its derivative models. In addition, the new plant will also have an engine plant (production capacity: 350,000 a year).
Qingdao branch plant: increases producing capacity to 515,000 a year by the end of 2011 through second-stage construction
 In June 2010, SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile's Qingdao branch plant (SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Qingdao Branch) started construction of a new plant (the second-stage construction) in the Qingdao plant. The new plant that is capable of producing 215,000 a year will be completed by the end of 2011. With this, SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile will increase the production capacity in Qingdao from 300,000 vehicles in July 2011 to 515,000 by the end of 2011.

 

FAW-GM (The factories are in Changchun, Harbin, and Qujing [Yunnan province])

Changchun new plant: starts operations in Dec. 2010 with production capacity of 80,000 a year, which will be increased further to 200,000
 FAW-GM's Changchun (new) plant, located at Changchun Special Vehicle Industrial Park of Economic & Technical Development Zone in Jilin province, started operations in December 2010. In May 2011, it began producing a pickup (Kun Cheng) under Jiefang brand.
 The total investment in the new plant is worth 2 billion RMB. The new plant has stamping/welding/painting/assembly lines. It has a production capacity of 80,000 a year in July 2011, which it plans to increase to 100,000 by 2013 and further to 200,000 in the future. Production of SUV/MPV/small bus will be added to the new plant in the future.
Harbin new plant: starts operations in May 2011 with production capacity of 100,000 a year
 FAW's Harbin plant (FAW Harbin Light Duty Vehicle) is reorganized by FAW-GM. In May 2011, the Harbin plant completed the transfer to a new plant in Hanan Industrial New Town, Harbin, Pingfang District. The new plant started operations and resumed production of light-duty commercial vehicles including light-duty trucks under Jiefang brand.
 The new plant (site area: 500,000 square meters, building area: 125,000 square meters) has stamping/welding/painting/assembly facilities as well as a production line for frames/axles. It has introduced GM's production management system including the GM Global Manufacturing System (GM-GMS). The total investment in the new plant is worth 1.423 billion RMB. The current production capacity is 100,000 a year (with 2,000 workers), which will be increased to 200,000 through 2nd-stage construction in the future.
 FAW Harbin Light Duty Vehicle's Harbin old plant was closed with the start of operations of the new plant.
Yunnan province plant: maintains production by upgrading existing plants for the time being, building new plants at Qujing Development Zone
 FAW's Yunnan province Plant (FAW-GM Hongta Yunnan Automobile), which is acquired by FAW-GM, has upgraded its existing two plants - Sanbao plant (Qujing city) and the plant within Qujing city - in order to adapt to GM Global Manufacturing System (GM-GMS). In July 2011, the company has production capacity of 150,000 (2 shifts) light-duty (mini/light)/heavy-duty commercial vehicles and minivans/MPVs/SUVs.
 In June 2011, the local government of Qujing city announced that FAW-GM Hongta Yunnan Automobile planned to transfer its existing plants to Qujing Economic & Technical Development Zone in Yunnan province (Xichang Industrial Park Zone, which is 90km away from Kunming New International Airport) and to build a new plant with a production capacity of 250,000 a year (200,000 light-duty trucks and 50,000 heavy-duty trucks).
 The plant within Qujing city and the Sanbao plant in Qujing city will transfer to a new plant. The company will build a new plant (including carburetor welding /painting/assembly/test, measurement lines) that produces light-duty trucks with a larger body size, preparing production capacity of 100,000 (2 shifts) a year. In addition, the company will construct a new plant (including carburetor welding /painting/assembly/test, measurement lines) that produces light-duty trucks with a wheelbase of 3360mm or less within the same site, building production capacity of 100,000 (2 shifts) a year.
 The total investment in the new plant is worth about 2 billion RMB. The site area is 2 million square meters. The company will build a light-duty truck plant and an R&D center, a production line capable of producing 70,000 sets a year of cargo to be used in light-duty trucks.
 Besides, FAW-GM Hongta Yunnan Automobile is said to be planning to build a production line capable of producing 50,000 heavy-duty trucks a year.

 



Enhancement of engine production: from 1.57 million in 2011 to 3 million in 2013 or later

 GM will boost production capacity of its engine production facilities in China from 1.73 million (actual production) in 2010 to 2.57 million a year in 2012 and further to 3 million in 2013 or later.

 Concerning joint venture plants with SAIC, the company will construct a new plant in Shenyang and in the Liudong Xinqu, Liuzhou, and will also add facilities to existing plants in Yantai and Liuzhou, thus boosting annual production capacity.

Shanghai GM

Yantai engine plant: In February 2011, 2nd-stage construction of the engine plant began boosting production capacity to 660,000 a year
 In February 2011, Shanghai GM's Yantai engine plant of Shandong province (Shanghai GM Dong Yue Powertrain) initiated the 2nd-stage construction (expansion) of its engine plant. It is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2012. The total investment in the 2nd-stage construction is worth 1.65 billion RMB. With this, the production capacity of the Yantai engine plant will increase by 300,000 per year to 660,000 (2 shifts) when combined with the existing plant.
Shenyang vehicle plant also builds an engine plant, preparing production capacity of 450,000
 In addition, as part of a Shenyang 3rd-stage construction of a (new) plant, which will begin by July 2011, Shanghai GM's Shenyang plant (Shanghai GM Norsom) will also build engine production facilities. The new plant will be capable of producing 450,000 a year. The company expects to complete the construction in 2013 or later.

 

SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile

Responding to enhancement of vehicle production, SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile builds production capacity of 1.4 million engines at the end of 2012
 Along with the expansion of annual production capacity of vehicles, SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile is also undertaking and accelerating the enhancement of the annual production capacity of engines. The 2nd-stage expansion work of the existing engine plant, which is attached to the existing vehicle plant in Liuzhou, will be completed by the end of 2011 in order to boost production capacity to 525,000 a year. In addition, the company has already initiated the 3rd-stage expansion work of the existing engine plant in Liuzhou, planning to complete it at the end of 2012; the production capacity of the existing Liuzhou engine plant will be boosted to 700,000 a year.
 In addition to this, the company has already started the construction of a new engine plant in Liudong Xinqu of Liuzhou city, which is attached to a new passenger car plant. The new engine plant will be completed at the end of 2012, newly adding production capacity of 350,000 engines per year in Liuzhou. With such expansion/construction, the production capacity of engines by SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile will be boosted to 875,000 per year at the end of 2011 and to 1.4 million at the end of 2012.
