China's emerging EV automakers and non-Chinese OEMs, new policies in China's auto industry

  In the second quarter (Q2) of 2021, China's emerging EV automakers such as NIO, Li Auto, XPeng, and Hozon were engaged in building manufacturing sites.

  Following similar strategic investment announcements by Baidu and Xiaomi, which are in different industries from the automotive industry, the 360 Group, a cybersecurity solutions company, announced that it will make a strategic investment in Hozon New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd. (Hozon) in Q2 and become the second shareholder in the company. This follows the 360 Group’s announcement in the first quarter (Q1) regarding its planned participation in vehicle manufacturing. Chinese IT companies are accelerating their entry into the intelligent car market; to date Huawei, Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent, DiDi, the 360 Group and others have been manufacturing vehicles and providing components and solutions as suppliers.

  The BMW Group, GM, Ford, and Hyundai Motor, non-Chinese automakers focusing on the electrified vehicle business, have all announced their electrification strategy plans for China. The BMW Group plans to launch 12 EV models from the BMW and MINI brands in the Chinese market by 2023. GM will launch more than 10 New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) based on the Ultium platform architecture for electric vehicles by 2025. Ford has declared that its EV business will become a major area of its automotive business in China in the future. Hyundai-Kia has stated it will launch a dedicated EV model in China every year starting in 2022.

  This report mainly introduces the trends among the emerging Chinese EV automakers and non-Chinese OEMs in China in Q2 of 2021, and also briefly reports on the major policies of the Chinese automotive industry announced in Q2 of 2021.
