SAIC and Dongfeng Motor exhibit EV/PHV; FAW Group's compact concept cars

Summary

 This is the second report on the Beijing Motor Show 2012 (Auto China 2012: 2012 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition) held from April 25 to May 2, 2012 (press days are April 23 and 24). In this report, we summarize the exhibition of 34 new models (including 13 new new energy vehicles) by the top three Chinese OEMs - SAIC (SAIC Motor), Dongfeng Motor (Dongfeng Motor Corp.), and FAW (China FAW Group).


 SAIC exhibited six new models (including three new energy vehicles) that include two EV and PHV that are scheduled to be launched in the second half of 2012 and a flagship sedan under the Roewe brand.

 Dongfeng Motor showcased 10 models that include four new energy vehicles (including the Fengshen E30 EV, which is scheduled to be launched by Dongfeng Motor Passenger Vehicle, which is under the umbrella of Dongfeng Motor, by the beginning of 2013) and six new gasoline-engine vehicles (including the Joyear SUV - Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor's first SUV model).

 FAW displayed 18 models that include four new models under Hongqi (Red Flag) premium brand and three concept cars developed based on Toyota's NBC platform, which will be launched by 2014.

 The Roewe E50 is a compact EV hatchback (based on the Roewe E1 concept) that SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicle spent three years developing independently. 3569/1551/1540 with a wheelbase of 2305mm. The vehicle weight is 1,060kg. (Its sister model is planned to be available under the GM brand.) The model will be launched in October 2012. The 2012 sales target is 1,000 units (selling price: about 300,000 RMB).
 The model comes with a lithium iron phosphate battery (18kWh) made by US-based A123 and a permanent magnet synchronous motor (maximum output: 52kW). The cruising range in NEDC mode is up to 140km. The maximum speed is 130km/h. The electric efficiency is 11.6kWh/100km in European NEDC mode. It takes six hours to fully charge the battery from a standard power source (voltage: 220-240V). It takes 20 minutes to charge the battery quickly (20%-80%, SOC) on a 380V power source.
Roewe 550
PHEV
 The Roewe 550 PHEV is an independently-developed PHV sedan based on the Roewe 550. The model can run on various modes including an engine mode, and series/parallel/series-parallel modes. The fuel economy is 2.5L/100km. The electric efficiency in EV mode is 16kWh/100km. The cruising range in EV mode is up to 50km (European NEDC mode). The model is produced at the Lingang plant in Shanghai. It is scheduled to be launched in the second half of 2012.
 The model comes with a 1.5-liter VCT engine, electronic drive unit ("EDU", a drive motor with a maximum output of 50kW/maximum torque of 317Nm, and an ISG motor with a maximum output of 25kW/maximum torque of 147Nm), which is jointly developed with Shanghai Jieneng Automotive Technology and SAIC Transmission under its umbrella, and lithium iron phosphate battery (46 cells, total capacity 40Ah/11.8kWh). It meets Euro5 emission standards.

 The Roewe 950 is a second-generation flagship sedan (B+ class) under the Roewe brand. It adopts the Buick LaCrosse's platform. 4996/1857/1502 with a wheelbase of 2837mm. The model mainly competes with the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and VW New Passat. It was launched in April 2012 (selling price: 188,900-319,900 RMB).
 The model comes with a 2.0-liter DVVT (maximum output: 108kW/maximum torque: 190Nm)/2.4-liter TGI (maximum output: 137kW/maximum torque: 240Nm)/3.0-liter V6 TGI (maximum output: 190kW/maximum torque: 296Nm) engine, which it shares with the LaCrosse, and a 6-speed AT with manual mode. Four front airbags are available as standard equipment. A cruise control system (CCS), curtain airbags, and rear seat airbags are available as optional equipment.
MG
Icon
 Debut. The MG Icon is a concept car of compact SUV (4-seat, 5-door). The design of the former MG Rover's MGA/MGB-GT and the interior of the MG-TF/MG-PA are used as references. The model mainly competes with Ford Ecosport and Nissan Qashqai. It is scheduled to be launched around 2014.
 The model shares the ZP global platform with the MG5/Roewe 350. The commercially-available model plans to use a 1.5-liter turbo engine (maximum torque: 200Nm).

The maximum speed is 80km/h. The cruising range is 150km (at a constant speed of 60km/h) and is 100km in ECE mode. It takes eight hours to fully charge the battery from a standard power source and 30 minutes to charge quickly.
 The model comes with a water-cooled DC permanent magnet motor (rated output: 16kW/maximum output: 25kW, rated torque: 60Nm/maximum torque: 100Nm, voltage: 240-342V), a lithium iron phosphate battery (capacity: 18kWh), and Electronic Manual Transmission (EMT).

(Mild HV)
 The Fengshen A60 ISG (Mild HV) is a mild-hybrid sedan that is developed based on the Fengshen A60 (5-seat). 4655/1710/1510 with a wheelbase of 2700mm. The curb vehicle weight is 1280kg. The maximum speed is 190km/h. The fuel economy (announced by Dongfeng Motor) is 5.9L/100km, which is 20% better than the same-type gasoline model.
 The model comes with a 1.4-liter Dongfeng Motor's original engine, air-cooled permanent magnet synchronous motor (rated output: 10kW/maximum output: 15kW, rated torque: 57Nm/maximum torque: 90Nm), ISG system, AT with manual mode, and a lithium iron phosphate battery (voltage: 144V, capacity: 4.4Ah).

 The X121 (model code) is a concept car of sedan version of the Weizhi V2. The model is smaller than the NH2 and the NS2. 4130/1680/1530 with a wheelbase of 2450mm. It meets Euro5 emission standards and comes with a VCT-i 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed MT/AMT. It is equipped with ABS+EBD/BOS/TPMS, front SRS airbag, and EPS. The model is scheduled to be launched as early as in 2013.

Besturn B90  Debut. The Besturn B90 is a flagship model (B-class sedan) in the Besturn series, which uses the platform of the New Atenza (New Mazda6). The model targets young users. It mainly competes with Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, and Ford Mondeo Zhisheng. It is scheduled to be launched in August 2012 (selling price: 140,000-180,000 RMB).
 4860/1822/1472 with a wheelbase of 2780mm. The model comes with a 2.0-liter (maximum output: 108kW/maximum torque: 184Nm), or a 2.3-liter engine (maximum output: 118kW/maximum torque: 207Nm) and 6-speed MT/5-speed AT. It is equipped with smart key and electric retractable wide-angle side mirror with heating system. The fuel economy (announced by FAW Car) is 5.6-5.8L/100km (at a constant speed of 90km/h).
Oley 3box  The Oley 3box is a first model (sedan) in the Oley series, which FAW Car spent three years developing independently. The model adopts VW Jetta's PQ32 platform. 4485/1660/1465 with a wheelbase of 2525mm. The maximum speed is 170km/h. The model is launched in April 2012 (selling price: 62,800-89,800 RMB).
 The model comes with FAW Car's original 1.5-liter ET1-series VCT-i engine (maximum output: 75kW/maximum torque: 135Nm) and 5-speed MT (S-series)/4-speed AT (S40i-type), which the Aisin group makes. It is equipped with back-up radar, four front airbags, remote key, and electric roof.
Hongqi H7  Debut. The Hongqi H7 is an entry sedan (model code: "Hongqi C131", C-class/FR-type) for public vehicles under FAW Car's own "Hongqi" premium brand, which is developed based on Toyota Crown. The model adopts FAW Car's original platform - H. It meets the five-star rating of crash-safety standard in Europe. 5095/1875/1485 with a wheelbase of 2970mm. The fuel economy (announced by FAW Car) is 7.1-7.2L/100km (at a constant speed of 90km/h). The model mainly competes with Audi A6. The selling price is about 250,000-400,000 RMB.
 The model comes with FAW Car's original 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo-charging engine (maximum output: 150kW, maximum torque: 260Nm)/2.5-liter engine (maximum output: 150kW, maximum torque: 242Nm)/3.0-liter engine (maximum output: 170kW/maximum torque: 300Nm) V6 naturally-aspirated engine, and 6-speed AT with manual mode. It is equipped with ABS/EBD, EPB (Electric Parking Brake), GPS car navigation system, TPMS, and smart key.
Hongqi L7  Debut. The Hongqi L7 is a limousine (bullet-proof, It meets the five-star rating of crash-safety standard in Europe) under "Hongqi" brand, which is independently developed based on a concept car - Hongqi HQE. The model adopts FAW Car's original L-type platform. The wheelbase of the model is shorter than that of the Hongqi L9. The selling prices ranges from 1 million RMB.
 According to a media report, the model comes with a 6.0-liter FAW Car's original V12 engine, CA12GV1 (maximum output: 292kW, maximum torque: 550Nm), and 6-speed AT with manual mode, "TB-68".
Hongqi L9  Debut. The Hongqi L9 is a flagship limousine (D-E class) under "Hongqi" brand, which is a symbol of China. The bullet-proof model is considered to be a model for high-ranking government officials. It adopts FAW Car's original platform-L. Its wheelbase is longer than that of the Hongqi L7.

Note: On April 20, 2012, FAW announced, in Beijing, a plan in which it would make the "Hongqi" brand into one independent brand in the future and that it would introduce nine new models including two SUVs/one company car/midsize limousine bus by 2015. It also announced that, in addition to the development cost of 5.2 billion RMB, which is invested in the development project of Hongqi two (L/H) series and C/D/E-class high-end models, it would make an additional investment of 10.5 billion RMB by 2015.
