Standards and SEP surveys in the field of 5G communications

HUAWEI, MediaTek SEP (standard essential patent) case study

Summary

This report was prepared by MarkLines based on patent information from the "Technical Information Distribution Service - swimy" provided by Toyota Technical Development Corporation (TTDC), and reports on recent technology topics surrounding the auto industry. The two business areas of TTDC are intellectual property (IP) and measurement control solutions. The IP side of TTDC is involved in the collection and analysis of information on automotive technology developments globally, and provides services such as consulting for research planning, applying for patents in foreign languages, and technical translation.

Technologies such as connected and autonomous driving, which are becoming increasingly important in the automotive industry, require wireless communication technology to connect vehicles with the outside world. The mobile communication technologies used by these vehicles are being actively used by communication manufacturers such as Qualcomm Incorporated (Qualcomm) and Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (Huawei) to develop standards for LTE and 5G, and to declare SEPs (=Standard Essential Patents). Automobile manufacturers are currently using mobile communication technology by paying license fees per vehicle to such telecommunication equipment suppliers through patent pools, and it can be said that telecommunication-related standards and SEP trends have a strong relationship with automakers.

This report focuses on 5G, which is used for autonomous driving and other applications due to its features such as high-speed, large-capacity communications, low latency, and multiple simultaneous connections. It shows what kind of technologies have a large number of standards and SEPs, and specifically what kind of SEPs exist.
