Electrified Vehicle (xEV) Sales Monthly Report (March 2026)
HEVs remain strong amid high fuel prices; BEVs and PHEVs see growth driven by Chinese OEMs
Global electrified vehicle sales and composition by powertrain (BEV/PHEV/HEV)
Sales of electrified vehicles (xEVs) in March in 12 major countries and three Nordic countries (15 countries in total) reached 1.999 million units. Year-over-year (y/y), the number of units sold decreased by 3.5%, while sales increased by 57.9% compared to the previous month (m/m). The share of xEVs was 34.3%, an increase of 3.4 points from 30.9% the previous month. Cumulative sales of xEVs in the three-month January to March period decreased 7.5% y/y to 4.650 million units, accounting for 32.3% of total vehicle sales volume for the period.
Looking at the breakdown by powertrain, BEV sales in March totaled 979,000 units (16.8% share of total sales), PHEVs 427,000 units (7.3% share), and HEVs 593,000 units (10.2% share). For the January-March period, the cumulative sales figures were 2.152 million units (15.0% share), 1.039 million units (7.2% share), and 1.459 million units (10.1%share), respectively.
While BEV sales continued to decline significantly in China and the United States, they showed an upward trend in other countries, resulting in a y/y decrease of just 0.7%. While sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have declined by 17.1% y/y, growth in other countries has not been sufficient to offset the decline in the U.S. and China. On the other hand, HEV sales are growing steadily in Japan and the United States, and sales are also increasing in Europe, including Italy, Germany, and France, resulting in a 3.8% y/y increase.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz amid the U.S.-Iran conflict has caused crude oil and natural gas prices to rise, and concerns about energy shortages are spreading across the globe. Since rising fuel prices directly affect the cost of maintaining internal combustion engine (ICE) equipped vehicles, a prolonged period of high prices could provide a tailwind for EV sales; however, it also risks having a significant negative impact on the overall economies of various countries, raising concerns about the impact on total vehicle sales, including electrified vehicles (xEVs).
