World Smart Energy Week Spring 2022: Electrification Technologies (3) V2X, Charging

V2H, chargers and power supply for EVs - International Smart Grid EXPO, Decarbonization EXPO

2022/04/20

Summary

The 18th Smart Energy Week 2022 Spring (March 16-18, 2022) was held at the Tokyo Big Sight convention and exhibition center. Overall, there were more booths in a similar format to the event held before the COVID-19 pandemic; the venue returned to the East Hall and was bustling. According to RX Japan, the organizer of the event, the total number of visitors for the concurrent exhibitions as a whole (3-day total) was 41,751 visitors, which was lower than the 66,576 visitors in 2019 (before the COVID-19 pandemic), but up from the 28,345 visitors last year.

This report introduces the exhibits of V2X (vehicle-to-everything), quick/regular chargers, external power supplies, etc. that were exhibited at the 12th International Smart Grid EXPO Spring and the 1st Decarbonization EXPO Spring as Part 3 of the series of reports on Smart Energy Week 2022 Spring: Electrification Technologies.

V2X (vehicle-to-everything) refers to the external use of electricity from the large-capacity batteries installed in EVs and PHEVs, and includes V2H (vehicle-to-home) for use in homes, and V2B (vehicle-to-building) for use in offices. There are also technologies such as V2G (vehicle-to-grid), which refers to a system in which electric vehicles communicate with the power grid to sell demand response services by either returning electricity to the grid or by throttling their charging rate.

In addition to the electrification of cars and the shift to EVs, the end of 10-year (10-year fixed price purchase policy) terms of Japan’s Feed-in Tariff (FIT) system has brought a shift from the sale of electricity generated by solar power generation to private consumption. In addition, the replacement demand for aging solar power conditioners (power conditioners: devices that convert the DC of solar cells to AC) is also driving the shift to EVs and residential use. Many companies participating in Smart Energy Week Spring 2022 exhibited V2H-related devices that connect EVs and household power distribution systems.
