The Spring 2020 Congress of the Japan Society of Automotive Engineers (JSAE) was scheduled to be held at the Pacifico Yokohama exhibition center on May 20-22, 2020, but was canceled due to the new coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic. The JSAE has instead released the technical papers that were scheduled to have been presented during the symposium’s technical sessions.

This paper introduces the new electric powertrain technology related to the new Yaris Hybrid vehicle that Toyota launched on February 10, 2020, and is based on the following technical papers.

  • New Development 1.5L Hybrid System for Compact Vehicle, Mr. Takahide Kitagawa (Toyota Motor Corporation)
  • Development of New Hybrid Transaxle for Compact Cars, Mr. Makoto Tomita (Toyota Motor Corporation)
  • Development of Power Control Unit for Compact-Size Vehicle, Mr. Keitaro Ishikawa (Toyota Motor Corporation)

The electric powertrain equipped on the all-new Yaris not only incorporates the technology installed on the new Prius with the electric powertrain of the Aqua released in 2011, but also newly adopts technologies such as a new semiconductor device, the RC-IGBT (Reverse Conducting Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) for the power module of the new power control unit (PCU). The electric powertrain newly adopts technologies such as a downsized PCU mounted directly above the transaxle (T/A), a dry sump lubrication mechanism, and a power generation motor using small diameter concentrated windings.
