The WCX18: SAE World Congress Experience was held from April 10 through April 12, 2018 in Detroit, Michigan, U.S., for the second year since its name change. One of the major themes at WCX18 was the development and effects of self-driving technology and vehicles. Both GM and Ford emphasized autonomous technology and vehicles at their exhibits. Suppliers such as Hitachi and Velodyne showcased systems supporting self-driving vehicles. Several speaking sessions, including a keynote presentation by Bob Lutz, former vice-chairman of General Motors, discussed consequences of autonomous technology.

This report is the first of multiple reports which summarizes technologies, systems and ideas presented at WCX18 from both displayed exhibits and speaking sessions. This report will focus on content related to the themes of autonomous driving. Reports regarding environmentally friendly technologies and the influence of mobility and connectivity will be released at a later date.
