Sales Trends of Chinese OEMs in Europe
Market share close to 10%, BYD's sales volume grows more than 5 times
Summary
According to MarkLines production and sales data, new vehicle sales in major European countries totaled 8,962,000 units in the first half of 2025 (January-June), down 4.6% year-over-year (y/y). Of this total, Chinese OEMs sold 872,000 units, down 2.3% y/y, accounting for 9.7% of the total market. Russia remains the largest export destination for Chinese OEMs, and although sales volume fell compared to the same period last year, market share remains stable. Sales increased in Western Europe, including the UK, Spain, and Germany, with sales in Spain in particular nearly doubling year-over-year. Looking at the powertrains, there is a notable increase in PHVs and HVs.

Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ltd. (Geely) maintained the top spot in sales volume in Europe among Chinese OEMs, thanks to the contribution of the Volvo brand. However, the decline in the Russian market led to a 14.4% y/y decline in 2024. Chery Holding Group Co., Ltd. (Chery), which came in second place, also saw a 12.2% y/y decrease in sales volume. Although sales volume declined, the company is actively promoting the construction of manufacturing sites as well as research and development centers in Spain and Türkiye.
SAIC Motor Corporation Limited (SAIC) and BYD Auto Co. Ltd. (BYD), which have not made full-scale entries into the Russian market, were less affected by market changes there and grew by 10.5% and 422.0%, respectively, y/y. BYD is rapidly expanding its investment in the European market. The company has established its European headquarters in Hungary and has begun construction of a plant, while also carrying out several research and development projects to accelerate localization.
