Summary
Global production marks record high
Global production by the 12 Japanese automakers increased by 2.4% year-over-year (y/y) to 26.38 million units in 2013, achieving a record high for the second consecutive year. On the contrary, production in Japan decreased by 3.1% to 9.63 million units from the previous year, when the volume had increased significantly thanks to the eco-car subsidy program. The volume fell short of the 10 million mark again as in 2012.
Increase in ratio of overseas production and decrease in exports
With production expanding in Asia and North America, overseas production hit a record high for four consecutive years, up 5.9% to 16.76 million units. Production is continuously growing particularly in Asia and the ratio accounted for 34.3% of the global production in 2013, coming close to 36.5% in Japan. In contrast, exports from Japan dropped by 2.7% y/y to 4.67 million units due to increasing production shifts from Japan to overseas.
Production volume in January-March 2014
In the January-March quarter of 2014, the eight Japanese passenger car manufacturers produced 6.72 million units worldwide, up 6.3% y/y. Out of the total, production in Japan increased by 11.7% to 2.53 million units as a result of satisfying last-minute demand before the consumption tax hike in April 2014. Meanwhile, overseas production resulted in an increase of 3.3% to 4.19 million units. Nissan, Honda, Mitsubishi Motors, and Daihatsu achieved two-digit growths in their production volumes, whereas only slight increases were observed at Toyota, Suzuki, Mazda, and Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI: the automaker of Subaru).
