Canadian vehicle sales increase 4.9% in July

Canadian vehicle sales in July were up 4.9% from the same month in 2016, to 181,834 units.
SUV and pickup sales, at 123,603 units, were up 8.3% in July, as passenger car sales, at 58,231 units, were down 1.7% compared to last year.
Canadian vehicle sales of 1,220,902 units for the first seven months of 2017 were up 5.0% from the same period in 2016, with passenger car sales down 2.0% and SUV and pickup sales up 8.7%.
Combined sales in July for the Detroit Big 3 were up 1.7% to 76,969 units, while sales of all foreign nameplates combined were up 7.4% to 104,865 units.
Of the Big Three manufacturers, GM sales were up 21.6%, while Ford sales were down 7.1% and FCA sales were down 4.9% from last July.
Among Japanese automakers, Honda, Subaru, Nissan, and Toyota brand sales were up in July 10.7%, 5.8%, 11.0%, and 3.4%, respectively.
Hyundai sales were down 14.8%, while Kia sales were up 15.0% from last July.
Among German companies, Mercedes-Benz sales were up 10.7%, as BMW brand sales dropped 1.8% from last July.
VW brand sales were up 37.9% in July compared to the previous year, while Audi sales were up 29.7%.
